Decent game with a slow start vs. Denver. Gunn basically pulled a shift change to shake things up in the first half. They struggled with finishing though and Denver had a few near-miracle clearances. Shots finished 32:4 in a 3-1 game.

I agree with DenverCard, against UCD the entire first half was awful. Shift change didn’t help this time. Only outshot UCD 5:4 and finished the half down 1:0. They gave up a goal in 25 second and almost gave up another 2 minutes later. Second half was much better though finishing remains a challenge. UCD went into a shell in the second half and barely tried to attack.

The team is falling into the pattern of the last 2 years - start poorly, give up an early goal and then chase like crazy to catch up. Also as much as recent past teams have pushed the envelope physicality-wise, this team pushes it even farther. I hope it doesn’t bite them too often.

On a digression - the official in the Denver game was terrible and gave us both a rereview of a video review that changed nothing; and a sequence that included a foul and card on Groeneveld who thought he got fouled, another Stanford card (pymm?) for a push because he thought the Denver player was faking, both coaches getting cards and a video review that reversed the foul and I thought resulted in a Denver card. But the box score cards and timing don’t match up to what I saw on field. And we had 3 near fights - Islam and one of the Denver defenders would have thrown down for real in a longer game. Ref didn’t call enough but still got suckered on dives. I didn’t think he was biased which was about his only good point. Just terrible.

Stanford won a chippy game vs. San Jose State last night, 1-0. 8 yellow cards issued, 4 to each team.

Per GoStanford, so far LSJU has outshot its opponents by 93-37, has 28 corners to 10 for the opponents - and has been whistled for 91 fouls to opponents' 60. All of which suggests some talent on the field, and an aggressive "front-foot" style.

The men won 4-0 vs. CSUN yesterday. The score line flattered a bit - the men were better, but not 4 goals better. A couple of errors by CSUN and some nice finishing, and 4-0 it is. It got a little chippy late, but CSUN was understandably frustrated.

Was anyone at Cagan stadium for the ND game the other night? I guess I'm glad I wasn't. The visiting Irish defeated top ranked LSJU M soccer by 3-1. The stat sheet says LSJU outshot ND by 24-12, and had 8 corners to just 2 for ND. 

Soccer can be cruel (for another example, LSJU W soccer v FSU in last year's college cup final).

Not that it wound up mattering, but there was a goal disallowed by VAR in the 81st minute.  Don’t know how close or far it was (I just happened to look at the scoreboard while it was under review).  You never know; sometimes if you are only one goal behind an all out effort in the last ten minutes can salvage a tie.  But it wasn’t meant to be.

Technical difficulties lost the first 35 minutes. 

I am sorry but the ACC/ESPN quality is unacceptable and getting worse. It has been constant problems this fall. Somebody needs to get fired.

Stanford down 1:0 though no idea how. The pattern of giving up the first goal continues.

Stanford loses 3:2.

Stanford had a great initial part of the second half and got up 2-1 on a pk and a great strike from range. Then they gave up a silly handball PK and another foul almost immediately after that lead to a third UVA goal. This really was a game they should have won. Beyond counterattacking, UVA didn't show much.

This team has a higher ceiling than the last few years - just more dynamic on offense. But they also have a lower floor - right now there are too many fouls, cards and defensive errors. Maybe they grow out of it, maybe they don't.

With only 5 matches remaining in the regular season, Stanford needs to start winning if they want to make the NCAA field.

Men pull out a 3-2 win after going down 2-0 at halftime. Slow to close on a ranged shot off a corner for goal 1 and a dumb pk for goal 2. Pymm picked up what I believe was his fifth card which would suspend him for the next game. 

Stanford goals on a pk from Pymm, a shot from Chow at distance on a volley, and finally Reilly off a corner.

I am a broken record on too many cards, too many loose goals and you live dangerously giving up the first goal. Or goals this game. But the offensive firepower is there, and they pulled this one out. Needed it badly.

On a side note, I am not a fan of the new challenge system. We actually had 2 successful challenges for pks in this one, but lots of challenges this year are Hail Marys or time outs. And it’s encouraging instigating and then flopping. See the Boes play in this one where Duke instigates contact, Boes lightly reacts and the Duke player goes down like he was shot. Use it or lose it; so why not challenge? Not working for me.

Clemson Stanford early and it looks like a rugby match so far. Camera work is terribly herky jerky  - not sure I can actually stand to watch this.

We wind up losing 3-2 despite being up 1-nil and 2-1.  Played the last 10 or so minutes down a man, and the last goal was an own goal.  Blah.

Lousy sports day today.  In addition to men's soccer, the women's volleyball team got swept by Louisville, and the field hockey team lost 4-1 to Wake Forest.

First goal conceded was a dumb pk.
Second goal was a great Clemson play.
And yeah the third was an own goal where I am not sure what the defender was thinking.

Still too many defensive errors and too many cards. Note Pymm was out with YC accumulation.

Not a good enough view to really comment on the red card. But they managed to give up goal 2 and get the deferred RC on the same sequence. But the Clemson player went from dead to totally fine in an instant.
