Hi John -
Thank you for your messages and support of Stanford basketball. I can assure you that senior Athletic Dept leaders (including me) have been talking with all of the players, and in many cases their parents. The entire portal process has been dynamic for Stanford and everyone. While we may not have gotten everything right, I can assure you that we are not being passive.
Your suggestion about a statement is a good one. Thanks for offering it.
Most importantly thank you for your 35 year support of Stanford basketball.
Thank you
John
hi john -
stanford athletics reacted very slowly when usc and ucla left for the big 10. can we please react more quickly this time?
i am concerned we may once again close the barn door after the horse has left.
must you remain silent?
may i respectfully suggest you make some sort of statement? if you have legal concerns, make it constructive rather than blaming —for example, “i am of course concerned about the large number of women’s basketball players who have entered the portal. please know that we are talking to all involved and hoping to formulate a path forward as soon as possible.
thanks,
john
Great suggestion re Nneka. Bravo!
Boilerplate responses are deeply off-putting.

It's depressing that this actually makes me happy. She really deserves a great senior season.

Yup. I have no doubt she will be great there.

Stanford will announce Kate Paye is stepping down. It will be announced in such a way that it appears she did so voluntarily. There will be no reference to any allegations or investigation. This will be done to keep the negative publicity out of the news.
Stanford will quickly hire Lindy La Roque as the next HC. She will be tasked with saving the program she played for. Tara will be heavily involved in her hiring. Stanford will limit themselves by only looking at female candidates. She will bring most of her staff and some of her players. 1 or 2 current assistants (those were least complicit) could stay on as assistants. The rest of the staff will be gone.
Anyone else care to venture a prediction?
Stanford will go the "safe" route and hire Lindey La Roque, which (from my perspective) is not the best choice if the goal is to rebuild Stanford WBB and get the program back to elite status. Lindy most certainly has done well at UNLV but in this last season, the "Rebels" were no longer dominant (21-11), losing games to opponents like Montana State, BYU, Rice, Cincinnati, New Mexico and others. Other teams in the Mountain West have gotten much strong while UNLV has stayed stagnant. No continuous improvement.
Scott Rueck and any potential male coaches will not be considered.
I would love to see someone like Lisa Fortier (Gonzaga) or Carla Berube (Princeton) be your new coach, especially Berube. What she has done with relatively small lineups is incredible. The way Princeton plays makes other teams very uncomfortable. That is the kind of coach you need, but Stanford will pick a sentimental favorite.

Carla is the new Northwestern coach. You know Scott SP but would he move.

I was not aware that Berube went to NW. Sorry, but I don't know Coach Rueck. Sounds like you're confusing me with someone else.

Who's on our realistic dream list of coaches?
-Lindy (obvious)
-Scott Rueck (Oregon State is currently practically a mid major- Stanford would be a better job)
-Aaron Johnston (Sdstate - no west coach connection so longshot but has won a lot as midmajor and been to many NCAA tourneys)
-Carla Berube (she would also have been on my list but just hired at Northwestern as mentioned)

IS the consensus here that Paye will be fired? Was that the subtext of the "we'll have an announcement" From Donahoe "next week"?

I'm honestly not sure what to expect. I expect some kind of change, but I guess after all the times our AD has failed to intervene sooner in recent years, I'm having a hard time believing they'd really pull the trigger. But if there isn't a change at the top, what does that event amount to?

Was it inferred that Chloe wanted to stay if Paye left? UNC seems like a perfect fit for her style of play.
Maybe it’s the optimist in me but i’m sticking with “an announcement” this week has to mean something is imminent likely a coaching change. Any announcement about Paye staying would essentially say the players brought concerns and weren’t believed. If that’s the case just don’t make any announcement at all which is what I think Stanford would do if nothing was going to happen.

Have we ruled out Tara stepping in as an interim coach for a year? Like Reich? This would stablilze the program for a year, to give us time to do a thorough search for a new coach. I would hate to make a rash decision on a new coach, just because the portal is closing soon.

I m not at all sure a Tara reprise would stabilize anything. It won’t keep existing players as they have no idea what they will be getting in a year and it would be difficult for recruiting. either keep Kate and commit to her or go in another direction but. O interim and accept that Tara is history

And do it soon. May already be too late.

I think Tara has already established herself as someone who isn't going to wholeheartedly embrace the new NIL/transfer culture...I don't see much progress being made with that move. Stanford WBB needs a hire who knows what it takes to lead a team of young Stanford students.

I know it probably won’t happen but I would like to see Scott Rueck from OSU as the new head coach. I’ve always been very impressed by his player development and the ability of his teams to outplay their opponents even when the other team has superior athletes. Good at X’s and O’s and good at player development and seems like a good guy. Would be a good fit here.
