Well, Shaq did what he had to do as well, and won four NBA championships (3x MVP) despite never playing on a team with eight future Hall of Famers as teammates. Bottom line, Russell and Shaq were both bad free throw shooters who didn't improve. Unfair to label Shaq as a bad teammate based on his free throw shooting.

Wilt shot underhanded the night he scored 100 and went 28-32 from the line. He writes about this in his book: after shooting 50% in 1960-61 he switched to underhand for the 1961-62 season and improved to 61%, however he felt uncomfortable shooting that way and eventually reverted to the traditional form and never approached that percentage again.
Rick Barry has said that he's reached out to dozens of NBA players over the years but that nobody wants to learn to shoot underhanded. As you mentioned, George Johnson was the exception and he improved dramatically (from 41% as a rookie to over 70% for the rest of his career.) I remember John Paye shooting free throws underhanded too, I think he may have learned the technique at a Rick Barry camp.

One of the NBA's first real stars, Paul Arizin, shot free throws underhanded. He shot 81% from the free throw line, playing mostly in the 1950s, all for the Warriors.

Spectacular start to his career and then an arm injury shortly thereafter ended it.

Jackie Robinson's UCLA teammates Kenny Washington and Woody Strode were the first I believe. Jackie Robinson could have broken the modern color barrier in both football and baseball.
