The reason Mays hit leadoff that day: he and Richie Ashburn were in a tight battle for the batting title. Word came that Ashburn had gone 3 for 4 in his game to finish at .350. Someone calculated that Willie would have to go 5 for 5 to win the crown. So Rigney put him at leadoff to give him a chance at 5 ABs. Mays got hits his first two times up, but “only” finished 2 for 5, .347
Clark hit second that day I believe. HR was his first major league swing. HR to straight away CF. Which was darn hard to do in the Astrodome. IIRC Nolan struck him out second time up.
Not sure if it's correct and I may be getting my players confused, but was listening to a story the other day on KNBR. Clark hit the homer, got back to the dugout and chatted with a veteran and Clark asked: "He's going to hit me next time, right?" "Yup." Baseball in the good ole days. . .. .

Lonborg played from the mid 1960s to the 1970s. The longest career belongs to a player who played between the 1970s and 1990s.
One of the others played solely in the 1970s. And one played between 1915 and 1924.
McDowell played between 1987 and 1999. Two other players played between the mid 1980s and mid-1990s.
The rest all started their MLB careers between 1990 and 2010.

Hint: the oldster pitched for Gonzaga, then went to Stanford. He pitched in a 26 inning game in 1920, and the opposing pitcher (Joe Oeschger) did the same. He faced a still-existing record 96 batters in the game. His career was mainly with the Brookly Robins (Dodgers), and he played his last season with the 1924 New York Giants. Oeschger, a St. Mary's alum, was also on that team. He also served as a U. S. Army officer in WWI. And he married Maie Ebbets, daughter of Brooklyn Robins owner Charles Ebbets. This player was successful on Wall Street in the 1920s, then ran the family copper mine.
