i, too, would guess they didn't agree on salary. if that's the case, we don't know which side was unreasonable. stanford could have offered 2 million. garrett could have asked for 10 million.

what else can happen last minute at both duke and stanford? well, there's also the "anything else in your past we should know about?" question.

RE: Football Coaching Search [merged thread] - BostonCard - 12-09-2022

He had allies of his telling the world how wonderful he was and he let himself be seen publicly at Stanford. He also lost out publicly for the Duke job in a similar fashion. Suggests either he misjudged his chances or was led in the wrong direction. Stanford being Penny wise pound foolish is certainly possible (indeed, given what we know about the institution, reasonably likely), but it’s also possible that Garrett misjudged things or botched the interviews. Again, it seems to have happened to him last year, too, which makes me wonder if Stanford screwed up or if Garrett screwed up.

I would add Garrett’s statement was fine, and he probably had to put out something after letting it be so public.

I think it's the timing that doesn't sit well -- right after all the build-up. A few reporters immediately reacted as if Garrett was withdrawing from consideration. So it looks like brand management: not Garrett being rejected, but Garrett doing the rejecting. Fair enough, I suppose, but I do think it's a bit petty.

Just not Bloomgren.  Taylor is not my cup of tea philosophy wise.  But I think a clean break is important.  I heard Garrett was  ready to sign, but ABC matched the salary. Oh wait, wrong guy,  wrong sport……

RE: Football Coaching Search [merged thread] - needle - 12-09-2022

If Garrett was Stanford’s top choice and Garrett really was super intrigued, I think the interview would have likely happened closer in time to when the job came open.

So my guess is that things were never red hot on one or both sides, which would have made any sticking points (portal, salary, staff composition) loom extra large.

But that’s just a guess.

I can't get excited about ANYBODY that a Muir-led search ends up with today.

I think the error was in the build-up not the climb-down.  It is possible that the relative buzz on the three candidates reflects their relative pecking order.  That Garrett was the top choice, Taylor was next, and Brennan was eliminated early, and that Stanford and Garrett just couldn’t agree on terms. It’s also possible that the relative buzz has come from the candidates themselves, and that Garrett thought he had it in the bag (or was campaigning for it via proxies) despite merely being one of the finalists.

This sort of thing happens often enough that it’s not that big a deal.  The only issue is that it’s not like Garrett can point to a shiny new contract in his current position to make it look like his offer was matched.

No evidence that it is the case, but wouldn't it be wonderful if Andrew Luck was appointed the new football coach. Is it just coincidence that he came out this week and allegedly revealed "the real reason" he retired? Andrew has a good or great offensive mind, is charismatic, articulate, and was a genuine scholar-athlete. I'd be delighted if he were offered the position and accepted it,

As I posted elsewhere, great players are only sometimes good coaches, and Luck has no experience at all coaching.

IIRC Kal fans were very enthusiastic when Joe Kapp was appointed head football coach. Didn't work out very well.
If I were the new coach I would try to get Luck out to work with the QB's.

These coaching searches in the age of social media are always interesting. So much speculation, but no one really knows what is going on behind the curtain. I don't really understand why anyone is livid that Jason Garrett didn't get the job or tweeted that he is happy to stay at NBC. Of course someone had to screw up, right? I know less than anyone else on this board, but it could be as simple as Muir evaluated X candidates, possibly whittled them down to three finalists, talked to each of them in more depth (and that can't happen simultaneously), then let the two also-rans know.  One would hope they wouldn't say anything to the world, but maybe Garrett had told all his friends, like Michelle Tafoya, he was going after the job, they publicly supported him, and he felt he needed to say something to save face, or just say something. His tweet was fine and respectful. How does anyone know he was lowballed?  Stanford could pay half of what they were paying Shaw and it would still be a mid-tier salary.

Sounds like I am in the minority, but of the three purported finalists, Taylor, Brennan, and Garrett, Garrett was a solid #3.  He has as much college coaching experience as I do.

Coach selected - presser early next week suggests Taylor or No One Saw That Coming.  If it is Taylor, I feel bad for the Hornets. They are in a real postseason (unlike non-CFP bowl teams) and however this goes down, I hope they aren't left wondering "what if" their post season wasn't nuked by disruption. I get that it always happens and it is worse with the early signing date and portal, but it still sucks.  Normally I would root for Incarnate Word because of the name (and they are plural Cardinals to boot), but I hope the Hornets TCOB and win it all.

Brennan was never a finalist.

Muir: “hold my beer”

Is it permissible on the board to use the term "bleepshow"? Why would you bring Garrett on campus in such a public manner if you weren't planning on offering him the job? Makes me think Muir delusionally thought that Garrett was going to say yes to something like, "we're going to offer you not enough $ to buy a 3 bedroom house in Professorville." What if you're Tara VanDerveer? You're probably thinking "I can wait for Muir to leave so that he doesn't screw up the best planned coach transition in history."

My suspicion is that it would be Garrett who made demands surrounding admissions, NIL and the transfer portal, the answers to which ended his candidacy.

RE: Football Coaching Search [merged thread] - washingtonismoney - 12-09-2022

Obviously I am pretty biased on this subject -- see earlier posts on this thread -- but let's keep in mind Garrett finished as the runner-up (if not further back) with the Duke football search. It's possible that he is simply not a terribly appealing presence to people who aren't NFL owners.

That's obviously true, on both counts. There is no guarantee that someone from ANY category of candidate will necessarily be a good coach, whether s/he was a great player, a mediocre player, a non-player, experienced or inexperienced, charismatic or uncharismatic, etc., etc., etc.

Who exactly is it that manufactures this "new head football" that "has been found"? Wilson, Nike, or Big Game USA?
