Finally, two questions:

What is the color of the boathouse in Hereford?

And... What's in the case?

St Mary’s Herman Wedemeyer

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 03-21-2022

Herman is not in the Pro Football HOF.

But he was on Hawaii 5-0 for almost the entire run.

Silky thinking college then worried John Henry Johnson who I think started at at Mary’s Then ASU

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 03-21-2022

JHJ bingo.

And also on Hawai’i 5.0 was Tausau Al Harrington Stanford RB who missed a conversion in the ‘57 Oregon game and probably cost the Tribe the Rose Bowl.

Hint: Santa Clara player was an end who transferred to a PCC school.

Hint: The two CSM players later became coaches.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 03-21-2022

John Madden.
Harrington missed two extra points. Rose bowl possible until then

Ah, John Madden.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 03-21-2022

If Tom Flores went to Fresno JC I’ll go Flores

Geesh I’m slow Bill Walsh CSM

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 03-22-2022

Walsh and Madden.

Flores yes.

The Santa Clara player transferred to UCLA.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 03-22-2022

So interesting. I peeked well it’s not Bob Boyd

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 03-22-2022

Tom Fears.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Mick - 03-22-2022

Alyn Beals, scored 46 TDs at SCU. Went to Poly High in SF. Was Jerry Rice before Jerry Rice. Served in WWII as a Field Artillery Battery Commander. AAFC's all time points scorer when the AAFC folded.  Led the AAFC in receiving TDs all four years of the league's existence.

Not in the Hall.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - DC 86 - 03-22-2022

In honor of the implementation of the universal designated hitter:

Who finished his career with 44 hits in 662 at bats, an .066 average, lowest in MLB history (minimum: 300 plate appearances).

He struck out 420 times in those 662 at bats.

Hint: Cy Young award winner.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 03-22-2022

Randy Johnson

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 03-23-2022

Sandy Koufax

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Mick - 03-23-2022

Wes Ferrell

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - DC 86 - 03-23-2022

Very good guesses but not nearly as bad as our guy:

Randy Johnson .125 for his career (296 K in 625 AB)
Sandy Koufax .097 for his career (386 K in 776 AB)

I think Mick was kidding, Wes Ferrell was one of the best hitting pitchers ever, .280/.351/.446 career line (.797 OPS).

Besides hitting .066 and striking out in 63% of his at bats, our guy only had two extra base hits in his career (both doubles). Randy Johnson hit one home run and 14 doubles, Sandy Koufax hit two home runs and nine doubles.

Hint: pitched most of his career (and won his Cy Young) for a team in California.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 03-23-2022

Tim and Zito close but not enough at bats.
Thank goodness for the DH
