Dean Chance.

.066 career batting average, .069 career slugging average. (759 career plate appearances)

He actually walked 30 times in his career, which should be embarrassing for those pitchers.

Won 110 games through age 27, suffered a back injury and only won 18 more games before retiring at age 30.

Gotta be Dean Chance. Worst hitting pitcher I’ve seen may be Alex Wood.  He was 0-38 last year. Somehow he walked 5 times. Before that I’d have said Ron Herbel.  His career numbers 6-206. That is .029. 129 strikeouts.

On the other end of the spectrum, I still have Tony Cloninger nightmares…..

I don’t like the DH. But given that a lot of the pitchers that now come up haven’t hit live pitching since high school, it was time.

Giant pitchers collectively hit .090. last year.

Bobbbbbbbbbb and I were at the Sunday DH when Cloninger hit the two slams and had nine RBI’s. Spahn, Newcombe, Tommy Byrne, Wynn, Lemon were among the good hitting pitchers back in our day.

Among pitchers, who has recorded the highest single season batting average during the DH era (.356, 26 hits in 73 at bats).

And what SF Giant was almost as good, hitting .354 one season (17 hits in 48 at bats).

The leader was also a Giant at one point, but not the year that he hit .356.

So, Don Robinson as the highest.  The Giant that was close -  Billy Swift.

I’ve looked up the answers. Surprising.  I will say that Robinson was a better hitter than either of the leaders.

Among Giants wasn't Mark Portugal a good hitter? What did he have with SF, two years?

Bobbbb and I saw one of the great pitcher hitters, Gene Bearden, hero of the '48 World Series but his MLB career flamed out quickly.

One of the best ever finished his career as a first baseman in Japan. Who?

Yes, Orel Hershiser and Mark Portugal.

Mark Portugal.  One of the all-time Giant killers. They couldn’t beat him so they signed him. And once he got to the Giants he was exceedingly average.

Phogge mentioned Ken Brett.  Ron Luciano in his book (“The Umpire Strikes Back”) called Ken and George Brett quarter wits. Put them together and you have a half wit.  I don’t think he liked them much.

Portugal was 24-7 with a 2.70 ERA in the two years before he joined the Giants.  In his two years as a Giants starter, he was 10-8/3.93 and 11-10/4.15.  And to be fair, outside of his two terrific years in Houston, he was 88-85 over a 15 year career.

Nobody's mentioned Roger Craig?

Patrick Willis is probably the best 49er not in the HoF, and he will probably be elected soon (he's been one of the fifteen finalists each of the last two years). Played eight seasons, five times first team All-Pro.

Other very good 49ers: Ricky Watters, Tim McDonald, Merton Hanks.
