Oregon lost to OSU at home today.

While you’d think that Stanford has cemented at least a share of the PAC 12 title with Oregon’s loss today, if Oregon wins its four remaining games, and Stanford loses its remaining four, it is possible that Oregon wins the conference crown by virtue of having played and won one more conference game. It’s been an odd year for how much the PAC-12 has beaten up on itself in the middle of the pack.

I don’t expect it to happen, it’s just when I first looked at the standings I thought we might’ve wrapped up the title, but looking further led to the one scenario that could occur. There’s a few more permutations in regards to seedings for Pac-12’s, so I chose not to unpack that just yet.

Care to place a wager on that proposition?

So glad you didn't use "when pigs fly" because we've already had swine flu

Our magic number is 1.  One win or a loss by Oregon and Arizona and we will have sewn up the PAC-12 title.

What if they re-schedule the postponed Cal game and we win that one? What would be the tiebreaker? (Just trying to be a troublemaker. :))

I like this way of looking at it!

Sitting in the stands I watched Lexie and Hollingshed duke it out for much of the game.  Lexie worked her butt off on that assignment.  Hollingshed is an ass.  I don't tend to say that sort of thing about players but she crossed the line into bad sportsmanship/overly physical play.  Threw a few elbows, was wacking her defenders arm hard when the defender put an legal arm bar on her when guarding, etc., etc.  Crowd cheered when she got fouls and sat.  I have no complaint with our guards given the style of the game.  They did not turn the ball over that much considering.  Also seemed like players had trouble hanging onto the ball, maybe because it was an unusually warm day, sweaty palms.  Or someone greased the ball.

I felt the bigger issues were rebounding - we let CO have several possessions where they got 3 or 4 cracks at the basket, and not finishing well inside.  Just wasn't a hot night for anyone shooting really, but overall we had enough offense, which CO doesn't have.  Once we got ahead by 9 or 10 in the second half I did not feel like CO had a good chance to come back unless we really started to do crazy TOs, which we did not.

Wilson had another really good game.  She has stepped it up from early in the season and is really making a big difference with her defense and ball handling.  Are we perfect at the guard spots?  No super star there so no.  Good enough to beat anyone and therefore good enough maybe to win it all?  Yes, IMO.

Refs sucked by the way.  After Jump got trampled right in front of our bench, Tara was up and jawing at the official, which as we know, is unlike her even if she doesn't like a call.  She has to really hate a call to get that overtly upset.

Wow what an ugly game. Great defense by both teams, both taking away the 3-pt shot. Although at one point I was wondering how JVG would have done had she been available. Anna and Lexie are two tough cookies out there.

However, there are many teams we might face in the tournament who can play Colorado style defense and who have far superior offenses.  I am worried that it still was difficult for us to handle the defense.  A 63 point game after we knew exactly what was coming is not a confidence-booster.

However, we showed we can play Colorado-style defense even better than they can.  We had 12 steals to their 9, they had 21 turnovers to our 13.

This is not "pretty" basketball.  A good indicator of pretty basketball is when most shots are assisted.  We had only 10 assists on 25 made baskets.  Colorado was worse.  They had 6 assists on 14 made baskets.  Yes, only 14 baskets in the entire game for them.

One terrible stat for us:  we gave up 17 O-boards to Colorado.  Those and the unequal free throws are what kept the Colorado offense competitive for so long.

At the end of the day, they shot only 25%.  I shudder to think of what will happen if we meet a team that can hold us to 63 but shoots 45% at the other end.

And now we start what may be as great a challenge as the Tennessee--South Carolina trip--the trip to Oregon.  Both those teams have improved markedly and both those teams are much tougher at home.

South Carolina shot 26 for 73 or 35% when they beat us 65-61. So, if an opponent plays intense D hits a bit more than a third of its shots, it can beat Stanford even though the Cardinal shot 43% (of significantly fewer shots): 24 of 56. The difference was in the turnovers. They had 7, we had 20!!!

The presser:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFe0jM9eYqg

Of note:  JVG is out with protocol and they hope and expect her back for Oregon.

Brink says Tara wants her to "block shots that matter" which I take it to mean to avoid unnecessary risks.

Tara stresses again our depth and notes that none of our players are in the top 20 in the league in minutes played.  "It takes a special player to know your role" and deal with the limited minutes.

i wonder about that sometimes; but tara likes to have at the 3 someone who can reliably hit 3s.

RE: WBB: Stanford 63 -- Colorado 46 - BostonCard - 02-13-2022

That’s a weird comment by Tara.  All shots in her wheelhouse are going to be worth the same two points if they go in.  Unless she means don’t bail out a shooter who is taking a low-probability off balance shot by fouling, but take the risk coming on help defense on a play where the offensive player has beaten her defender and has a clear shot at the basket.  In retrospect, that is probably what she meant.

Do we know if any more of the missed games might be rescheduled?

Good question.  And how does rescheduling work?  Does the league do it or does it have to be agreed to by both teams involved?  Making rescheduling voluntary rather defeats the purpose of a league schedule.  Otherwise one could imagine all kinds of strategic cancellations if there were unscrupulous coaches.
