Down to the wire. We have a one point lead with under a minute to go. We'll see how it turns out.
Despite Tara not instructing the team to stop chucking up (and missing) threes -- we were 5 for 24! -- we eeked out a victory. Won't cut it against much better teams.

One wonders if the coaching staff was unwilling to go with "what worked" because they know that to go deep in the NCAAs we can't shoot a low percentage from "deep". Get it out of our system now when it won't kill us.

1. What a concerning win, simply fanning the flames of all of my worries, expressed before. No need for more analysis.
2. What a wonderful senior day ceremony for those who stayed, filled with touching stories, humor, and inspiration. Always such a pleasure to get a little window into the sisterhood as the players praise each other and as we hear from parents. Russell Wilson has a little practice as a motivational speaker, I think. And the crowd's chant of "one more year" for Anna provoked her to tell us that she had run out of classes to take at Stanford.

Another off shooting night from deep, which was the difference between winning in single digits and winning comfortably. While it's no fun to watch miss after miss, I don't think a coach should ever instruct a 40% 3 point shooter to "not shoot 3's" though. Hanna, Lacie, Lexie, Jana should always have the green light IMO. Anna, Ashten, and Cam need more of the yellow light, but they are all capable shooters. There have been plenty of games this season where we haven't shot it well in the first half and then caught fire the second half. Jump in particular has been streaky. But tonight we never got it going. It is part of the game that you have to hit some perimeter shots to keep the other team honest. Especially in today's game w/the 3-point line, you likely won't win if you don't make at least a decent % of your 3's. My take is to keep shooting and shoot with confidence! We have enough good shooters that the percentages will come out in our favor.
Defense got it done in the 4th as we locked them down and ended on a 10-0 run. Anna, the Hulls, Cam - just too tough.
Fantastic game by Cam and solid play by the rest of the crew. Really hoping Haley can deliver more as we hit tourney time. 5 points, 8 boards, 3 assists in 33 minutes is not bad or anything, but it's just not going to get it done against the top teams. It's her time and she needs to be in the drivers seat, I'm convinced of that. Teams are wising up on how to play her though. I'd like to see her get the ball more on the low block instead of always attacking from the perimeter where the defense has sagged off.
Also, tonight was viewing #2 of Jana and Hannah on the court at the same time. It didn't deliver again, but it does have promise and I do like that Tara continues to try it.

Yup. And often "what worked" becomes too predictable and easy to guard. I like the "get it out of our system now" thinking. Our shooters are quite capable (so says the percentages).

I still am frustrated with our offense, we really are struggling with shooting the ball this game and not finding alternatives; we've had success with Brink down low. I am not sure why are not setting up more plays for her or Belibi in the paint. Jones is the only one knocking down the midrange; let her start taking the ball in her hands too.
UW is still shooting at a 50% rate; I thought my box score wasn't updating, but they've been incredibly steady converting when they get their shot off. Fortunately, we've had some steals and shot clock violations in there to prevent a few opportunities.
Here's another indicator of how in love with the three we are on O: we had a measly 10 assists on our 24 baskets. So there was a lot of hero ball being played out there. Not much good passing to get one's teammate in position for a high percentage shot. (For contrast, UW had 12 assists on its 24 baskets.) Our saving grace is revealed by the TO column. We had only 9 turnovers whereas UW had 19.

There will come a time when opponents like South Carolina will be able to clog the lane and hold their own against us inside, so we are going to have to figure out how to make buckets from outside.

That's one reason why our low assist total is disturbing. Too much hero ball. And Haley Jones needs to take a lot more than 8 shots, primarily on drives.

A win is a win is a win. But these last two games have me worried. We are not playing like a Final Four team.

Really backlogged on DVR'd games so have only caught our press conferences lately, but the team has seemed kind of tired and low energy in the press conferences. The past week has been pretty distracting and neither WSU nor Washington are the kinds of opponents it's easy to get amped up for. And the end of this regular season has been kind of an "end with whimper instead of a bang" since we long since wrapped up the Regular Season Conference Championship. Plus the whole past two months with Omicron. So I will cut them some slack and assume they are storing things up for good runs in the two tournaments to come.

Some folks are a bit too panicky. We just haven't been shooting well lately, but that will change. And when it does, the team will win more comfortably. Looks to me that our shooters haven't been squaring up enough and the ball is coming off their hands at the wrong angle. Might be as simple as rushing their shots which could be the result of teams playing us tighter on the perimeter.

Of all the weeks to shoot badly, this week was the right one.

This had to be the best shooting percentage of any opponent we've played this season. I don't think we played poor defense, they were just making their shots.

Generally agree with this, and I'd add that for the last place team in the conference, they did a good job screening and passing to get their shooters open.

Our low number of assists was mostly because we missed shots. We missed a lot of layups that would have been assists (+3?) and if we made our regular percentage of 3's (35.1%) most of those would have been via assists (+3.5). Our season average is 15.4 so we'd be right there if we made the shots we usually make.

Yep, sometimes the shots just don't go down. We will be fine, though Jump seems a bit troubled by her inaccuracy. Trust the %. It will, however be interesting when we get to the Elite 8 and play a team with two quick guards who are given a good scout.

Correct. And some incredibly tough ones, including 3 treys at end of shot clock with hand in face. Tip the cap and be thankful for the W.
