It's just a question. There has to be multiple factors driving Stanford's decision to move on from David Shaw. Stanford has to care a lot more about football than the majority of people reading this board have presumed. I'm just trying to understand what football brings to Stanford that the brass values and doesn't feel Shaw can any longer deliver as Head Football Coach.

You are going to get sick of me making this point because I will be persistent.
Stanford should do what USC did last year. Find a highly successful coach stuck in a not-so-nice state, with a great team, and purchase the whole program as a package. I doubt anyone dreams of living in Tuscaloosa as a child. Just say'n.
Slightly more seriously, with $9 million to spend, I think the idea shouldn't be to look for 'available' coaches, per se, but rather lure a good one away from a big-league team stuck in a backwater town. $9 million a year can buy a top-10 coach. Bump that to $12m, and that would be a pay-raise for any coach in the country. And the extra $3 million would pay for itself through ticket sales, TV revenues, and major bowl games.

And just the suggestion of such a name suggests Stanford would be "big game hunting" for a Head Football coach. I just don't see the congruity with Stanford and how it is perceived, and having a football program that would be paying top dollar for a proven Head Football Coach.
Before a hire is made, Stanford had to decide what it wants from its football program. Does it want to be a playoff contender? Does it want football to be a revenue generator? Does Stanford want its football program to raise the profile of the university to Joe Public? Does Stanford want to fill the Stanford Stadium with paying customers? Now that Shaw has been seemingly forced out (I know we can debate the nuances of this, but let's be honest, if Stanford was 8-4 this year Shaw would not have coached his last game for Stanford on November 26, 2022), and does seem ready to embrace the transfer portal, we can assume Stanford does in fact care to some degree about having a legit football program.
Many people on this board have suggested Stanford might drop football, but I think the Shaw move and the transfer portal embrace shows Stanford is willing to be dragged - after some kicking and screaming - into a much more professionalized college sports reality. This would suggest Stanford is ready to make the investments needed to win, sell tickets, and generate ratings. Maybe there actually is an imperative to be attractive to a Big Ten invite? Now it's just a matter of identifying who that person is that can make it happen.
Is there some reason Deon couldn't hack it at Stanford? If he got the offer and took the job he would know what the recruiting rules were. If you wanted to butts in the seats and give the program's life a boost, he would be it. We all have perhaps a very negative vibe about Deon, but we don't really know the guy. Maybe he has what it takes.
I regard offering Deon the job as pretty crazy, but I am intrigued about what would happen if it worked.
Where does this focus on a Big 10 invite come from. It is not happening anytime soon and would remove a positive differentiator for Stanford. 5 of the top 16 ranked teams are currently in the PAC-12 and 4 of them will be in the new PAC-10.

FYI, Deion Sanders apparently has been offered the HC job at Colorado.
He's not in particularly good health; had two toes amputated as a result of blood clots.
And please don't even consider Urban Meyer in the equation.

Do we know that the head coaching budget is $9 million? Shaw was being paid $6 million a year, which was tops in the PAC-12 until Lincoln Reily was brought in for a gazillion dollars. More importantly, with the PAC-12’s deteriorating revenue situation, I’m not sure we can afford $9 million (or even $6 million, for that matter), unless we identify exterior sources (ie wealthy alums) willing to foot the bill.

I would be all in favor of Stanford hiring Deion Sanders as Head Football Coach. My point is how does he fit the cultural identity of Stanford in any way? Obviously, he's matured a lot since he was a player, but if we went back in time when Sanders played for FSU, I'm sure we could find any number of Stanford people pointing to "Prime Time" as the epitome of what was wrong with college sports at that time.
Stanford can't have it both ways. It can't dip its feet into the big time college football waters half way if it wants to be as relevant as the university leadership seems to want it to be. Admission standards are one thing, but everything else is another if you want to compete at the top.

I'm blown away that a story about Stanford's coaching search is behind a pay wall on ESPN's website.

Why? These types of stories (head coaching speculation) generally are. It has nothing to do with the program’s prominence, just that speculation by a paid columnist will generally be behind a paywall at ESPN, which suits me just fine. Your money is better spent buying someone like Matt or Sam a coffee. They will be much better informed and have a much more expansive view, because otherwise the formula is prettt simple: find previous players or assistants at the right level and put their names forward (plus or minus some selective leaking by the agents of guys looking to enhance their visibility).

Stanford will probably have to pay the going rate for a top coach.

For better or worse, Wilcox's 25 M dollar buyout is going to keep him at Cal next year and probably the year after. After that, maybe they can raise the money to get a replacement.

We are moving into a bifurcated world, where coaches in the SEC and Big Ten (including USC now) will have brobdingnagian contracts, while coaches in other conferences will have large but more modest contracts. Shaw was the best paid coach in the PAC-12 before Lincoln Reily. Recent coaching hires in the PAC-12 include Oregon ($29 million for six years:
https://www.athleticbusiness.com/operations/personnel/article/15286474/oregon-approves-29m-contract-for-new-head-football-coach) and Washington (who just extended DeBoer to $27 million over six years).

Hambly certainly hasn't shown himself to be a great coach yet. He won 2/3 with the best player in the history of college volleyball and the best recruiting class ever. Give him credit for getting it done but not sure that is much better than what any average coach could do.
Covid was a disaster. No blame but no real credit.
Last year was poor. One of the worst years in the last 30 or so. With a ton of talent.
This year has been good. Certainly back to the level we expect. But not great.
Agree that next year could be really promising. As long as we have no injuries at MB.
Hambly is far from great yet. He is a rock star on the recruiting circuit. We will see.....

We were picked to be sixteenth in the preseason poll. We are top-10, probably top-5. We were picked to finish second in the conference, and won it going away. Stanford has exceeded expectations this year. The last three years have been a complete rebuild as the entire starting team from 2019 graduated. We are ahead of schedule, and Hambly has done a good job in doing so.

Preseason we were so low because we were not that good last year. We had the talent but not the results. Other than Texas, who has more talent than we do?
Kipp, Baird, Miner, Francis - all top-5 recruits
Rubin - top 10
Oglivie was one of top liberos her year
Heck Xu was top-5/10 as well
Why did we need to rebuild?
