That year I probably attended every home game watched every road game. My recollection during the season Trent would ALWAYS walk out on the court during/after calling a timeout. Guess the tournament ref wasn't from the Pac-12 and wasn't familiar with Trent's actions.
The unfamiliar ref T'ed up Trent while calling a time out.

The current carousel/competition:
Louisville
Ohio State
Oklahoma State
Michigan
Vanderbilt
Washington
West Virginia
With Stanford, current P6 openings for Big10 (3), ACC (2), Big12 (2), and SEC (1).
More to come. Yesterday was a day of reckoning as teams were bounced from conference tournaments.

Disagree PA. He walks to the ref. He already had a T. It still makes me mad

Don’t disagree at all (with the Ugh), but his final season was 28-8 (or, I suppose, 27-8, if you want to give that DQ game - in Anaheim, IIRC - to Doug Oliver).
Johnson’s worse transgression in my mind, though, was saying (almost expressly, again IIRC) that he was leaving because he felt that
you he could never recruit players at Stanford that were good enough to win it all.
Fixed it for you...

The parallels between the Georgetown program and our own are interesting and merit further exploring.
Stanford got a Final Four run in 1998 and then the next year lost a 2-vs.-10 matchup in the second round, helping to put Gonzaga on the map.
Georgetown got a Final Four run in 2007 and then the next year lost a 2-vs.-10 matchup in the second round, helping to put Steph Curry on the map.
After that the Hoyas endured a string of banner regular seasons followed by early exits from the NCAA tourney. Then all the winning ran dry, save for a fluke run through the Big East tourney in 2021 and NCAA appearance which Colorado promptly quashed.
While I couldn't say precisely why Georgetown has been stuck on the mat, the forces at play are likely to be similar to those here. They have a proven winner in Ed Cooley who was hired away from Providence and just got through his first Hoya season. Whether he'll be able to replicate his winning with the Friars remains to be seen.
On our own program: Jay Wright is the medallion at the end of the rainbow. You don't expect to land him, but you still try. When evaluating candidates, some questions to consider: could their success to date have been a flash in the pan (Haase at UAB) or was it more sustained? How has he won, and more importantly, how likely would it work here? John Groce had that impressive run at Ohio, then Illinois moved in. It worked, but not for long -- the rise to Big Ten level competition proved a little too steep. Sure, he's ruling the roost at Akron, but how likely to pan out would be a second chance to win above the MAC level? Brad Underwood
dominated his conference competition at Stephen F. Austin before advancing to Oklahoma State and then Illinois. From the amount of winning he has done, it would appear that the Illini found their guy.

I'm extremely skeptical that Jay Wright would be more than a 0.01% chance of coming out of retirement from such a successful career to take on the daunting challenge of coaching Stanford MBB into a winning program.
I agree with those that are thinking more likely we get an up-and-comer new Coach.
This ideally should be a win-win for school and new coach.
Where the coach is stepping UP from what they've done before, and we are expecting vigor, enthusiasm, energy, dedication, and hopefully wins in return.
Of course I can't read Jay Wright's mind, but I would think him looking to leave broadcast analysis after his stellar career at Villanova to now coach Stanford would appear to him to be more of a "meh" than a "win".

What about Travis DeCuire, Montgomery’s associate head coach when he was at Cal. DeCuire has been the HC for 10 years at Montana with no losing seasons (200-123). Montana is 23-11 this season. I seem to remember that Montgomery was pissed that DeCuire didn’t get the Cal job when he retired. (Am I also remembering correctly that Montgomery wanted Turner to replace him at Stanford, but Bowlsby hired Johnson instead?)

Seems like the other name getting chattered about online is Matt Langel, head coach at Colgate. He's an Ivy grad (Penn, where he was an All-Ivy player) with no coaching experience in a major conference, but he's led Colgate to six conference titles in the last six years and won the conference tournament the last four years. Before getting the Colgate job, he was an assistant at Penn and then Temple.
RE: Haase fired -
Spiny_Norman - 03-15-2024
Tom Davis left Stanford after 4 seasons when he came to realize how hard it was going to be to get the players he thought he needed to win at Stanford. Trent Johnson left after 4 seasons under similar circumstances. Jerod Haase on the other hand recruited hard and successfully. He brought 5 star talent to Stanford. Maybe the talent didn't develop the way he (or we) expected and his teams didn't jell. But Haase did disprove the belief that Stanford could not compete for elite talent.
I hope that Muir will find a new coach with that same fire and enthusiasm for going after top recruits. And who is better than Haase at developing players who play hard, smart, fundamentally sound ball.

Nobody ever said Muir was the only Stanford AD making poor basketball coaching-hire choices.
By the way, when the process that culminated in hiring Haase was underway, I strongly supported Russell Turner. Great guy, coached with MM here at Stanford and when Mike was head coach of the Warriors, and has had a great 13-year run as head coach of the U.C.I. Anteaters. IMO, he still deserves a serious look now. He's a Wake Forest grad.

I knew Russell back then. His wife got a job at Stanford Hospital so he needed a job and got it at Stanford. Great guy. But not going to get into because I don’t know the whole story but sadly he wasn’t posduble before. Other than that I finally agree you you on something :)
Thanks PA but my impressive stands. As to Johnson saying too hard to recruit ??? He coached with Monty and Monty recruited great. Makes no sense
Striking gold again in Montana. I like that
RE: Haase fired -
msqueri - 03-15-2024
DeCuire is not successful enough for me. He peaked midway through his tenure at Montana, has only coached a top 100 team once ever, and in the last six years peaked at #137. Just not successful enough to warrant a power conference shot.
Turner is much more attractive and was on my list. Not super high on my list but that would be a defensible hire. His trajectory in terms of national ranks is 218, 249, 147, 90, 91, 84, 139, 147, 73, 106, 107, 133, 104, 73. I think we can do better but don’t totally dismiss his candidacy. Low end of what I would consider acceptable.

Lengthy travel to the Southeast is a rather significant negative for the coach and his team.
However, coaching in the ACC remains a great option for coaches with ambition and should be a recruiting positive too.
I just wish this had happened 12 months ago. Though looking across the USA many quality D1 programs have been able to convince their successful alums to come back to campus no matter what the level of compensation or success at their current program.
While I am thankful Muir finally has realized this needed to happen, that 12-48 month delay should be enough for us to see a similar message about his tenure IMO.
Lots of good names on the lists floating around. What concerns me is that I don't think we are going to pay anywhere near what top coaches in the ACC make, at least not to start. Plus there is all the negative rumors going around about how hard it is to recruit to Stanford, the NIL and then the portal issues. I am not interested in hiring an up and coming young guy who turns things around and then leaves for the really big dollars elsewhere.
We have lost some good player to the portal, but it is hard to say how many left due to coaching issues and who might have stayed if the programming was winning and going to the dance. Haase has shown you can recruit talent to Stanford, but you need to do something with the talent once you get it.
The WSU coach is bound to be the target of some bigger programs, plus his body of work as a head coach is limited. I like the guy from Princeton. He wouldn't find Stanford's academic limitations on recruiting all that different, but he would move from the Ivy to the ACC. If we can't get either Smith or Henderson, I would pick Alford. I hated the guy when he was at UCLA and think he has a lot of baggage that maybe Stanford doesn't want to deal with, but he has a proven ability to win, plus I think he would like a chance to get back into the big leagues again.
I sincerely hope we don't drag this process out too long until there are no empty chairs.
Haase at least to his credit has completely destroyed the difficult to recruit at Stanford notion. I've never seen so many elite recruits in such a tenure. I'd say retain haase on the new coaching staff in some recruiting capacity
RE: Haase fired -
msqueri - 03-15-2024
Haase did a nice job with the high end recruits but given the difficulty of retaining such recruits for the long run that was overrated. His overall recruiting otherwise was not very good. I have data demonstrating this if folks are interested but the idea Haase was a great recruiter is an the exaggeration. And in addition to his median recruit/typical players being a bit below the Stanford norm, he struggled with retention.

Question for those who follow college hoops outside Stanford more than I do: is there any precedent for firing a coach 10 minutes after a road game, before he's even gotten on the plane much less held the press conference?
I wanted Haase gone as much as anyone, but not waiting until today to do it feels unnecessarily mean in retrospect. It's not like there was misconduct or something.
Well, about a week ago UW fired its head coach BEFORE he got on the plane to Vegas…
As bad as Muir has been, I’ve got to believe that Haase has already been told long before yesterday. Indeed, the timing of the announcement might very well have been a matter of mutual agreement, allowing him to make his eloquent remarks at the press conference, along with Angel and Jones there to make their tributes as well. Plus, it put an end to all of the media (and fan board) snarky comments sooner than later…
Jerod Haase's press conference after he was fired shows that he was an incredibly decent, sensitive, and caring human being.
I've thought this from the beginning. He couldn't be as good a recruiter as he has been if he wasn't a good guy to be around.
BTW, here's the press conference if anyone hasn't seen it:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rd3Lxc_6Uao
After watching, I say hire Haase as AD. He clearly loves Stanford, he cares about education, he's been around top sports programs as a player and a (assistant) coach. He probably wants to keep coaching, but he just seems like he'd be a good person to keep around the university.
I agree, 100%.
I can believe Haase is a great guy, but he didn't show ability to hire assistants who could make the program great, so why would we expect him to be able to hire a great head coach to replace himself?
There's also the adage I've heard quoted here: As hire As, Bs hire Cs.
This isn't meant as a specific knock on the current assistants, who I know nothing about. Just judging the program on results.

Matt, who among the coaches DiBiaso, Davis, Johnson and Dawkins has been an above average recruiter? I exclude Montgomery from the comparison because we know he is the standard for all things Stanford basketball. Is anyone else even above average? Maybe it's hard to judge Johnson because his results are so skewed by the Lopi.

He was ruled out as a candidate for the HC job at Cal a couple times (I would guess it had something to do with why he wasn’t considered at Stanford).
