This was a painful game to watch, but it was less painful than if we lost.
The team learned very late (at shoot around I think) that one of Pitt's leading scorers entered the portal yesterday and was not with the team. This left Pitt with only 8 players and what must have been some internal chaos. Despite that, Pitt knew how to mess up our offense and succeeded in making it an ugly defensive game. I had the feeling at halftime that whoever made the first three would win the game--seriously, since making one would likely lead to more. Thank goodness it was us.
And has been remarked, Pitt's 0/15 from three point range was remarkable, and not an accident. We were playing them pretty tight. Pitt succeeded in punishing that perimeter defense a bit by passing in to their 6'4" center who could consistently score from about 7-8 feet, but it was far from enough.
In looking for positives I would point out that Clardy has been coming on strong late in the season. Last year she could not hit a jumper, but recently she has been hitting treys, free throws--all levels really, in addition to playing good defense and bringing the ball up.
Ogden did somewhat better tonight. While she had one or two of her patented flustered moments, she has been playing more minutes, scoring more points, playing better defense, and generally looking more confident as the season wears on.
The biggest negative is probably that Demetre has been receding of late. 0-7 from three point range today. That after playing only 7 minutes and not scoring a point against Cal, and scoring 5 points in 29 minutes against Duke. Something does not seem right.
A couple of interesting tidbits from outside the game. First, Harriel was in street clothes, and we were told she was "getting better" so apparently there is something physical going on.
Second, I sit next to a person who is taking Tara's class and have been getting some reports. Apparently Tara has said that the frequent transfers in and out will indeed make the Princeton less viable in college. I had to pinch myself to believe that I actually came up with a basketball theory in parallel with TVD! Of course, it is pretty obvious, I guess.
My (very) mild pleasure at winning this game is tempered with a certain degree of dread about Sunday. North Carolina is rated by Massey as being nearly as good a defensive team as Duke, and I hate the idea of playing against our former player Indya Nivar, who is their very successful point guard. A lot not to like about that matchup after tonight's inept offensive performance.

Also meriting mention: Agara (2 for 10), Demeter, (1 for 9), and Ijiwoye (0 for 2) were a combined 3 for 21 from the field. Horrific!

on the positive side for brooke, she played great post defense, including several beautiful blocks. she also ran the floor much faster than at the beginning of the season.
nice to see kennedy umeh get lots of minutes. she didn't knock anybody over in this game. had some nice scoring on the block, hit some free throws. she is quite fast down the floor as well - specially for someone so big! just a freshman. what if she makes the common freshman to sophomore leap!
opponents are learning to use shay's aggression against her. lean against shay, shay will lean back twice as hard, then fall over backwards: foul on shay.

Again, I cannot help but be impressed with Kate's press conferences. She always seems to set the right tone.
Also learned that Elena's parents were visiting to see her play in a Stanford uniform for the first time--they had never been to Stanford. That made Elena's basket at the end of the first half so sweet.

Tony Verdi is now my most-despised ACC coach. He appeared to be trying to interrupt our FT shooters with "Lisa! Lisa! Lisa" or "Timeout! Timeout! Timeout!" just as our players were shooting. I've never seen this behavior from opposing coaches (fans, sure, but that's what they're there for...).

Not while an opposing player is shooting a free throw. There are only certain times you can call a timeout, and that's not one of them.

The game officials were Lisa Jones, Rod Creech, Brandon Enterline. Calls to "Lisa" were presumably trying to get her attention (aka distract her from what she was doing at the time).

Timeouts are requested and potentially granted. I see no rule that prohibits requesting timeouts when you know they can't be granted. I would normally think that calls for timeouts while the other team was in possession of the ball to make a FT was an intentional distraction. But, before possession or after the ball is released, that's not unreasonable.
I did see Pitt bring the ball in under the Stanford basket, dribble to their bench, and then call a timeout, when they could have just called a timeout and advanced the ball without there risk or the time loss. Poor coaching? Inattentive players?

I’m not a particular fan of Pitt’s coach (indeed, I probably couldn’t pick him out of a lineup even having seen him less than 24 hours ago), but, honestly, Charmin smith’s behavior in the game before was substantially more egregious than the guy’s last night.
And I like Charmin.

well, there's always chris webber calling time out in the national championship game when michigan had no time outs left. but maybe that's a different kind of knowing they can't be granted.

Lisa was one of the refs.
And I think he meant he was asking to take a timeout if Pitt got the ball. But...still...not classy.

He did this *at least* twice.
One other thing--I started rewatching the game because I wanted to see when #15 threw an elbow at Nunu's face early in the game. Nunu responded with a bit of a shove.
I was surprised at the time that there was no whistle on either of them (of course, in due time, Nunu's shove would be "normal" in this game).
The broadcast didn't show it. The announcers didn't mention it, only when she left due to "some blood or something." I wasn't even sure it was visible from the east side of Maples.
Anyone behind the southside basket get a good view?
Nunu appeared to still be hurting even after coming back in.
