I have never seen a player more quickly and miraculously brought back from the dead, than if the referee does not call a foul, and the ball starts moving well with the opponent players. That on-the-brink-of-death player will often have a sudden cure and spring back up into the game.

Someone is injured, stop the clock. Corner kick, stop the clock until the ball is in play again. Same with throw ins and goal kicks. This will deter players from faking being near death after a minor trip or bump.
The 30 minutes is all we get in real ball in play time anyway so it balances out.
Actually the clock does stop if someone is injured.

Men beat BC last night 3:0 in a game where BC wasn’t competitive and mostly didn’t try to be. Seriously, BC was in full time wasting mode from minute 1.
Ref did a good job today - it wasn’t that rough, but it had weird moments he got right and he actually did things to deal with the time wasting.
My one complaint with the men is they lack patience on offense much of the time and can end up banging in mediocre cross after mediocre cross over and over instead of trying something more interesting once in awhile. Note the goals yesterday.
Goal 1 did come on a cross but where Palmer got all the way forward and was unmarked - good aggression and a change up coming forward that far from LB.
Goal 2, Islam did something different and went around his guy on the edge instead of simply crossing right away. Made for an easy tap in for Chow.
Goal 3 - Islam again with a change up rocket from 30-35 yards out.
You can see though why Islam has been such an impact player this year. He processes the game a bit differently from the typical college player.

I really appreciate your posts on the soccer games (men and women), Hieronymus. Thank you for sharing your observations and insights.
Islam is not a big guy, but he does a good job of holding the ball with his back to goal, which is so valuable in stringing together passes in the offensive zone. The BC defender towered over him, but he kept the defender off the ball. (I liked Kiil last year for that reason.) I think that in a previous post you said you were disappointed in de Flores, and I agree that he has struggled. He has made some nice flick-on headers leading to goals, and he got one himself v OSU, but his ball-handling has been poor, as it seems the ball always gets stuck directly under his body, from where he can't do anything with it. Islam is clearly an improvement.
I completely agree with your observation about a lack of patience, not only on offense but defense. I realize men's college soccer can resemble roller derby at times, and if you don't get rid of the ball you risk winding up in the hospital, but there is far too much of what we clambered for in junior soccer: "Boot it!!" On offense, just last night there were at least a few times when a shot taken a moment later would have likely led to a much better chance.
Jeremy Gunn certainly believes in meritocracy, as in addition to de Flores, Dylan Hooper and Duncan Jarvie have been displaced by younger players. That's got to be tough, and as one who loves to worry, I hope it does not affect team chemistry. (Not that I've seen anything to suggest that...from my home in Denver.)
I also worry that Rowan Schnebly might let in a bad goal at a bad time. I still remember his terrible gaff against SMU last year, and he can be sketchy playing the ball with his feet.
I think you posted earlier that you'd never give any particular team more than 10% odds of winning NCAAs, and I'm inclined to think there's even greater parity (coupled with the randomness of soccer outcomes) than that. Which makes playing as many games in the tournament at home so important, and therefore every regular season game significant.

I think Dylan Hooper was/is injured. I am not sure if he is cleared to return. If he is healthy and cleared to return, who does he replace? Hooper was a starter for the last 2 years and has been great as a central defender. While he may be better than Groeneveld and Tenconi-Gradillas, taking one of them out could disrupt the chemistry and the timing in the back field. One thing to watch is that Groeneveld has already received 4 yellow cards this season and has a tendency to play recklessly. We might be seeing Hooper soon, whether it's planned or not.

Stanford up against Wake first half. Wake has had a few moments. One excellent Rowan save so far.
Their referee though is wrecking my east coast better theory. This is the kinda guy that gets people hurt. Don’t believe the announcers that he is competent. It’s not constant roller ball, but wild tackles or collisions go uncalled or without a card. The offsides on Zack looked correct though.
0:0 so far.

2:0 with 4 minutes left. Zack with a great second goal. Overall Stanford was better, but got tired the last 15 minutes and Wake had a few good chances late. Thought the referee was vaguely better in half 2 but still bad. We at least had fewer really dangerous plays. The first Stanford goal I agreed with the Wake announcers looked offsides.
This blah blah red card for Pymm is ridiculous, especially in this game. Yellow was correct. The debate over a Wake PK might be a more legitimate conversation. But consistent with the overall officiating.
Nobody too injured though Chow had to leave, and there were several close calls. Tomo pushing a guy into the wall was stupid but pretty funny.
Finishes 2:0 Stanford.

Bohane's goal off his back heel as he jumped in the air with his back to the the goalie was amazing.

This was also Stanford's final regular season match outside of the Bay Area. Stanford plays its next 3 at home, followed by the regular-season ender at Cal.

Beautiful goal through and through. Great build up, lovely centering pass, and phenomenal finish.

First goal was also quite pretty; another nice build up from midfield.

At the half, Stanford and Pitt are nil-nil. Stanford has had 5 shots, 3 on goal; Pitt hasn’t attempted a shot.
Quite a disparity in fouls. Stanford has beeen whistled 12 times, to 3 times for Pitt.
Hope we break through in the second half.

What was the red card for? I watched the game but couldn’t figure out what made the ref go to the monitor and then issue the red card.

A Stanford player Pymm or Partal went down with a Pitt player. It looked like the Pitt player gave an extra shove/hit/knock on the Stanford player as the Pitt player got up. A lot of action was happening around the box when this happened. This is what I think I saw but I could be wrong.

Wasn’t obvious even rewinding. It wasn’t a very rough game and the referee called even ticky tack stuff. There was some minor stuff on some of the throw ins and free kicks, but not much was going on in this one to lead to a red card.
Comfortable win. Islam to Palmer on goal 1. Goal 2 was interplay between Fletcher and Islam with Islam finishing it.

BACardinal - 10-12-2025
The Pitt player punched the stanford player in the stomach when he was on the ground. The ref was right on top of it but let the play continue and when there was a whistle he went to review what happened.

1:0 Stanford - de Flores from Cleary who got around the corner and had a nice short cross. Stanford had most of the ball and lots of shots, but not a lot of good chances. Some scrambling defending at the end and the late odd whistles broke some Stanford momentum. USF defended well and no Islam hurt the offense.
Weird officiating performance. I thought he was very good pre goal. A little tight, but he adjusted to USF falling over when somebody breathed on them. Then he lost the plot post goal. Breathing became a foul on Stanford, and I have no idea what merited a card or a foul. Compare the high kick fouls and figure out why one was a card and one wasn’t. The USF guy ducked into Allen, but that is irrelevant - it’s the same play. Very odd.
