RE: Stanford Women's Tennis 2025-26 -
Lorcan - 02-20-2026
ACC play begins today with Georgia Tech.
We've won at doubles on Court 2, 6-0, but the other courts are in a battle - with Stanford saving match points on both 1 and 3 to stay alive against the pesky Yellow Jackets.
Somehow, the Card find a way to escape with the crucial doubles point and takes some pressure off singles. Driscoll and Ahn saved a match point and won at 6-5 40-40 on a let serve where Ekstrand was able to step in and crush a return.
Onto singles, we need 3. Still no sign of Glozman, so it looks like we'll have:
Ekstrand
Ahn
Driscoll
Wang
Myoung
Sun
All things said - this should be a win, but we'll have to see. A much tougher test against #21 Clemson beckons this weekend.

The report I have seen on Glozman is that she had a cast on her arm/wrist and may be back in April (if at all).

Hey there! We seem to have won 4-0 today.

Glozman played doubles today.

The team desperately needs her. They have fallen to #33 and may be in danger of missing the NCAA tournament. They struggled today to beat Syracuse, a team not ranked in the top 75.

Stanford women's tennis is down to 40 in the ITA rankings. Truly stunning for a program that has won nearly half of the NCAA championships ever competed. There is a very real possibility of this team missing NCAAs entirely.
Valerie Glozman has returned to the lineup playing doubles only so far. No idea if she will be able to play singles. Doubles is still weak as is #6 singles where Shaffer and Sun are a combined 2-10. Driscoll, who was such a pleasant surprise last year after transferring midyear from Denver, has struggled at #3 where she is 3-7. Without reliable play at doubles, 3 and 6, Stanford is often down 2-0 or 3-0 even to lesser teams.
This looks like women's basketball. A team that used to be among the sport's best now struggles in the middle of the conference and is not really competitive with top 25 opponents. It could be a long term slide. Stanford has signed 2 recruits for next season.

I'm much more optimistic about women's tennis than basketball. Ahn, Ekstrand, Glozman, Wang are a solid top 4, all with at least two years of eligibility after this year (though Glozman if healthy might consider going pro early). The two incoming recruits are both blue chips so that should theoretically be a good lineup, assuming everyone is healthy. Theoretically Blokhina could come back as well.
ETA: Charlie Celebrini, sister of the Sharks' Macklin and daughter of the Warriors' Rick, is one of the top 2027 recruits. I wonder if she'd want to stay close to family.

It's been a challenging year for tennis - but an upset is brewing over in Berkeley as Stanford stunned by taking the doubles point and they've taken the first set on four courts with Ekstrand, Driscoll, Wang, and Myoung leading the way. In a sign of how disastrous of a day it could be for Cal - even Emma Sun seems set to join the party leading 5-3 on Court #6.

Stanford sweeps Cal 4-0, winning the doubles and Ekstrand picks up a nice win over the NCAA runner up, Passola Folch to go with straight set affairs from Wang and Myoung.

Big win. Stanford is currently ranked #47 and this was the first win of the season over a team ranked higher than Stanford. The Cardinal has a season finale in Dallas vs. #30 SMU on Sunday. Need that one too for Stanford to have a chance at making the NCAA field.

Isn't there a conference tournament for women's tennis in the ACC? Or are you saying that if Stanford loses in Dallas they would need to win the ACC tournament to make the NCAA field?

I don't know if Stanford needs to win the ACC tournament to make the NCAA field. But I think they need a stronger resume than they have now. Their record is 11-8 and of the 8 losses none are really bad ones. Stanford has lost to teams currently ranked 7, 8, 9, 10, 14, 16, 22, 24 and 46. But Stanford has only one win over a top 50 team - Cal.
I would say beat SMU (#30), then beat at least one higher seeded team in the conference tournament.

Thanks for the clarification. I've been following women's tennis since Patty Fendick, so although I'm a bit of a "quiet" follower, I'm interested in any and all takes.
I just checked the conference standings, and I'm pretty sure that Stanford will end up seeded 5-8 in the ACC tournament, which means a bye into the third round. So Stanford definitely needs to defeat SMU on Saturday and win the third-round match a week from Thursday. Depending on the opponent for the third-round match, Stanford might also need to defeat one of the top 4 seeds who are currently ranked by ITA at #5 (UNC), #8 (UVA), #14 (NC State), #22 (Duke). NB: Miami (#35) is currently tied with Duke in the standings--they play in the final match of the regular season--so could replace the Blue Devils in the top 4.
That seems like a pretty steep hill for this year's team, but 4-0 vs Cal gives me hope!

Unfortunately, after a narrow loss at doubles, the metaphorical wheels fell off and the Stanford women lost to SMU, 4-1. Per gostanford.com:
Quote:The Cardinal, 11-9 overall, finished its second ACC campaign with a 7-5 league mark and the No. 9 seed in next week’s ACC Championship in Cary, N.C. Stanford will open Wednesday against the winner of No. 16 seed Louisville and No. 17 seed Virginia Tech. If the Cardinal was to prevail, a third-round match with No. 8 seed SMU would await on Thursday.
Would a revenge win over SMU be enough to make the NCAA tournament? If Stanford lost in the semifinals, we would be at 13-10. Iowa made the tournament in 2025 at 13-10 and a #33 ranking. But Spiny Norman pointed out that Stanford's ranking going into this weekend was in the high 40s, so we might need to go 3-1 this week. Is that a bridge too far?

I think that the 43 year streak of Stanford women's tennis playing in every NCAA tournament is going to come to an end this year. I will be surprised if they make it. Even if they rise up and defeat Va Tech/Louisville and then SMU, they will not beat top seed Virginia.
RE: Stanford Women's Tennis 2025-26 -
Spiny_Norman - 04-14-2026
In the new ITA rankings out today, Stanford has made a big leap up to #33. If the committee uses ITA rankings in determining the NCAA field, this means that Stanford's chances have improved quite a bit since last week when they were #47. If Stanford beats Va Tech/Louisville, their shot at making the NCAA field may come down to the next match vs. SMU. Win and get invited. Lose and stay home.

Lorcan - 04-15-2026
Worrying to see Ekstrand get blown out on #1 by Virginia Tech's #1 - Uslu. We need four from the remaining five courts, but have won the first set on all five including Emma Sun at #6.
RE: Stanford Women's Tennis 2025-26 -
Lorcan - 04-15-2026
It's looking like it will come down to a third set on ct 5 & 6, with Myoung and Sun both trailing a break in their second sets. Driscoll, Wang, and Ahn all won to put the Cardinal back up 3-2.
Myoung comes back from a break down to clinch a 4-2 win for Stanford. A revenge chance against SMU is next. It'll be crucial for any hope of making it to NCAA's.

Last season the ACC sent 10 women's tennis teams to NCAAs, including:
Team..ACC Record (ACC Standing)..Record when selected (ITA Rank when selected)
Georgia Tech 6-6 (8th) 13-11 (29) [Beat #16 see Syracuse, lost to #1 seed Duke]
Clemson 4-8 (T9th) 14-11 (38) [lost to #16 seed Syracuse in only ACC tourney game]
Wake Forest 3-9 (13th) 15-11 (40) [Beat #11 seed SMU, lost to #6 seed Notre Dame]
Stanford tied for 7th in the ACC (with a 7-5 conference record) and is 12-9 overall. Their most recent ITA rank was 33. Does Stanford really need a win over an 8 seed (or even a 1 seed) in order to get a bid? Is something making it more difficult this year to qualify?

Stanford last week was ranked 47. This week 33. I have no idea why the team moved up 14 places after beating Cal and losing to SMU. Who's to say that the team won't drop back into the 40s if they lose to SMU? Should Stanford remain in the 30s, they should make the tournament. Fall into the 40s and it's dicey.
Here is Stanford's ranking history over the last month.
March 17 - 33
March 24 - 40 (after defeating Syracuse and Boston College)
March 31 - 36 (after losing to Notre Dame and defeating Louisville)
April 7 - 47 (after defeating Virginia Tech and losing to Virginia)
April 14 - 33 (after defeating Cal and losing to SMU)
