To summarize some discussion from the paid fan board for those who don't subscribe, the women's basketball environment (+ presumably culture) this past season under Paye was not great and did not bring out the best in everybody.  Coach Paye clearly felt the pressure to win and didn't respond to that pressure in the best way this season. We should expect possibly 3+ transfers out but nobody knows a number for sure or whom.

As of now, Paye is expected and likely will be back for next season with a depleted roster, poor incoming recruiting class and a losing/lackluster season likely imminent.

Why are you quoting this source like it was etched on stone tablets by God?

First shoe to drop. Harper Petersen enters the portal.

If you are bit of a Pollyanna you could interpret this as a good sign. Harper didn't play that much this year. She has been talking to her teammates who did play and they say they aren't planning on leaving, so she decided she didn't want to spend another year on the bench.

I am guessing there are folks on the paid boards who are close to the program, e.g., player's family members (remember Lili Thompson's relative(s)?) or other insiders like BBKIA, from the bootleg days?

What's the deal with her?  Never played.  Why?  No skills?  Injured?  What were the expectations when she was recruited?

RE: WBB news - BobK - 03-30-2026

Harper was a top 100 player. She was injured a lot both seasons foot or feet
I Just read on track to graduate in three years

Definitely didn't have that on my bingo card for "first portal entrant." And I agree, that could be read positively (she is worried there's too much depth returning ahead of her), or merely the first domino to fall of many...

Correct - she was at one time ranked #87 nationally in high school.  Her playing time was limited most of last season due to a left foot injury which ultimately required corrective surgery late last winter, before the end of the season.  She really only returned back to action this past December.

She will have 3 years of eligibility remaining somewhere else it sounds. Very nice family. I do think injuries really hampered her.

RE: WBB news - petersalas - 03-30-2026

I agree with most of everything.
I’ve gotten to know Harper’s mom quite well and they are a wonderful family. Personally, I think injuries did hamper her, but in my opinion and what I want to see change is the player development, especially on the bench. I think we needed to see some more of her, Karlie and Nora. Hopefully there are not any more transfers and hope to see some changes next season and they have to start at the top with player development and opportunities.

Addie Deal of Iowa announced for the portal. She didn’t have a great Frosh year however Stanford recruited her and she was ranked # 18

Yesss. Not super quick, but quick enuf and a super sharpshooter who played vs excellent competition, I think, in SoCal.

Yes - this could be one to watch.  Two notable starts for her were vs USC (0 pts in 17 minutes) and UCLA (3 pts in 21 minutes). Iowa fans also note she seemed a step slow vs good B1G  competition, needed to put some zing on her passes and seemed to prefer and fared better in up tempo offensive situations, not as well in perimeter-passing based half court sets. She is from Irvine so my $'s on her transferring to Westwood, but hey, let's go for it - what've we got to lose?

Deal was all Big 10 Frosh.

# one on my list and I wrote a Stanford coach about her last season. The all time HS leader in threes is from Nor cal 4.0 committed to Long Beach State. Her team won D4 State moving up from D 6. I saw her play I know some limitations. But as long as the team throws up so many threes why not have a player who makes them

I know absolutely nothing about her, and she may be the second coming of who ever is considered the best player we’ve ever had, but …

A step slow, needs to put more zing on her passes, and doesn’t fare as well in perimeter passing sets sounds exactly like the kind of player we need.

NOT.

Although that also sounds like  a perfect description of what we’ve been watching the past two seasons, so maybe she would fit in seamlessly…

RE: WBB news - BostonCard - 03-30-2026

Counterpoint: “super sharpshooter” is exactly the kind of player we need.  Hannah Jump was a very productive player at Stanford, even if she wasn’t the fleetest old foot and didn’t have the most pinpoint passes.

RE: WBB news - Card10Fan - 03-30-2026

With UCLA losing their whole starting lineup. Deal to UCLA seems like a perfect match.

Who remembers who her finalists were last time? Iowa always struck me as somewhat of an odd choice. The Iowa winter probably did her in.

I agree - she seems like an obvious target for Cori. Oddly, her finalists were all southern schools nowhere near Cali: Baylor, Tennessee, and LSU

I think I'm going to say something I realize our coaches don't have the luxury of: I would wait until we know who all may be transferring out before I would look to potential targets in.

BTW, Somfai had a new instagram post with pics of Hungary AND Stanford hooping and talking about how her life is blessed. And while that certainly doesn't preclude her intention to transfer, if we hadn't heard those rumors (and if she hadn't disappeared during out post-season), I would not have read that post and thought "this person is headed for the exit."

RE: WBB news - BostonCard - 03-30-2026

Yeah, the coaches don’t have the luxury.  Honestly, it is a matter of trying to land the best player out there who would fill any empty spots, and since we know we will have at least one, I think you have to try to gauge whether Deal would even consider us.  If so, I think she’d fill an important role for us, unless we are confident that Amborne will grow to become a regular in the rotation.  And even then, I would think we would want a second consistent three point shooter.  Even when we had Jump, I recall that defenses would totally overplay her in the perimeter and without great ability to blow by them and lacking a second great shooter, we really couldn’t make defenses pay.

RE: WBB news - bl82 - 03-30-2026

Let's just say, for the sake of argument, that 3-4 of our big three juniors and big three frosh were seriously considering hitting the portal. Who would have the best chance of retaining them: Kate, Scott Rueck, or Lindy La Rocque?
