Pour one out for South Korean football fans, who watched their "Golden Generation" squad lose to a lower-ranked South Africa team while the SK coach benched the SK captain and best SK player ever for the entire first half. A draw would have seen SK through to the knockout stages, but a loss sent them home. The coach has since resigned.
The real scuttlebutt is that the former coach currently owns the SK historical record for number of minutes played in World Cup matches, and he did not want the SK captain to eclipse that record. It is, regrettably, entirely believable on face.

A good friend of mine from Germany, now living in the Netherlands, is a strong supporter of both national teams. Yesterday was a very black day for Stefan after both his teams lost in games that went to penalty kicks despite their top-10 rankings.

Interesting story from the Germany game, where captain Kimmich was looking for someone to take their last kick, and multiple players, including veteran Leon Goretzka, a midfielder with 15 goals for Germany, declined. Tah, a central defender who has never taken a PK in a game, stepped up and missed.

IMHO, this is a failure of coaching. The coach should have a list, and the players should expect a shootout is possible and be prepared for it.
PKs are so entertaining because of the stakes, and IMHO because you can see a player's face before the kick and know he will miss. When Kluivert for the Netherlands and Woltemade for Germany stepped up, I predicted both misses to my wife. You could tell they were nervous and not locked in.
Perhaps Goretzka was always going to be shook and miss. But the failure is ultimately on the coach not preparing his squad.
Netherlands playing for PKs is another coaching failure IMHO given their atrocious shootout record, though perhaps a bit more defensible as Morocco honestly looked the more dangerous side.

Glad the Divers (if you know, you know) lost to Morocco. Surprised that Germany ended up being a paper tiger and was eliminated by Paraguay.
France looks unstoppable.

France looks very good, and with a match against Paraguay followed by the winner between Canada and Morocco, it has a pretty clear path to the semi-finals. But as Paraguay demonstrated, you never know…
Semis could be France vs. Spain and Argentina vs. Brazil.

But the other bracket has Brazil vs. Norway and Mexico vs. England. Only one of those 4 advances to the semis. Call it the bracket of death.

Wow, Belgium came back from two goals down in the last 5 minutes of regulation with goals in the 85th and 89th minutes. They are now at halftime of the extra time.

I saw a photo comparison of Messi's no-call action in his first game against Balogun's red card, and they look a lot alike.

In my opinion, it was a dangerous play with forseeable injury risk. While the injury was probably not the goal, it's not on the refs to guess a player's intention. So a dangerous play, hard contact seen through to the ground, and a player out for the rest of the game (at least). I was hoping for only a yellow, but not surprised by the red.
Here's a counter-factual - If this was turned around and it was Balogun or Pulisic writhing on the ground after a hard foul with an ankle turned 90° and probably out for the rest of the WC, would US fans be calling for a Red card? I think so.

Tarik Muharemovic (the player fouled by Balogun) played the rest of the game and led both teams with 11 clearances. In fact the didn't even miss a minute of action since he received treatment while the referee was reviewing the play on the monitor.
So what are you talking about (inventing, better said) about missing the rest of the game and being out for the rest of the world cup?

My understanding was that intent is part of the analysis on issuing a red card.
