Gayle's Bakery in Capitola is very popular. I know people who really like it. I've only been there once.  http://www.gaylesbakery.com/

Kelly's French Bakery in Santa Cruz is good. Nice patio area, and it's right next to some winery tasting rooms. But that's on the other end of Santa Cruz, up by Natural Bridges, so it's not as convenient to Aptos and Capitola.  http://www.kellysfrenchbakery.com/

I do like Gayle's a lot, when we're over the hill we stop there regularly.  That's at the northwestern part of the map we're considering, so my wife would like it.  I'm more interested in the southeastern part; e.g., I'd go as far as Pajaro Dunes if Mrs. Mick was up for it.

There's no accounting for taste. What you call homely I find interesting. I would much rather watch a game at the Palestra than at Maples. I enjoyed the mixture of architecture and didn't need wheels to pick up groceries or to sit down for steak and beer.

The unanimous opinion of people who know the Northern California coffee scene is that the best coffee in Santa Cruz, bar none, is Verve Coffee roasters (http://www.vervecoffeeroasters.com).  The one on 41st avenue is probably going to be closest to the Aptos/Seascape area.

Let me know if it deserves the hype.

The Farm Bakery & Café, Aptos Coffee Roasting Company and Full of Beans get the popular vote, although I currently prefer Norma Jean's.  The problem is that those are all back on Soquel avenue, about a mile proper from the beach.  The two shops at the beach, The Beach Bean (Aptos/Rio Del Mar) and Full of Beans (Seascape) are comparatively marginal.  But we'll figure it out...
