RE: Class of 2022 - Phogge - 08-23-2021

Obviously the recruiting department needed a push from me. A mere thanks would do but I wouldn’t turn down direct deposit.

If 247sports is accurate, 6 of the 17 recruits who visited in June have committed to Stanford and 7 have committed to other schools. Among the 4 remaining, Stanford is a finalist for 3 (Ayomanor, Bailey and Williams). Campus visits are not a guarantee of a commitment, but they sure seem to make a difference.

That list is quite incomplete. Almost every single one of our summer commits visited in June. Jake Maikkula was unoffered at the time, but I think everybody else did. Pat Caughey and Ashton Daniels both actually unofficial visited/camped with us in June without offers.

RE: Class of 2022 - LDN/SG Card - 08-23-2021

brobdingnagian news re Cooper IV considering scouting reports and position (of need..) - am hopeful re the three WRs (Hagan, Ayomanor and Reuban), Williams II (DB?) and perhaps the jewel Bailey (LB) would round off a great group and surely top 10-15 national class.  I see we are linked with Vakalahi (DL) but not sure how realistic...

Anyone have any idea if there many more realistic and significant recruiting targets out there?

RE: Class of 2022 - TrumpCard - 08-23-2021

Maybe Selah Brown, Carson Tabaracci, and Akim Sledge.

Absent surprises with 1-2 elite players who aren't on my radar, a top 15 class seems like the absolute max result we can expect.  2012 was Stanford's only Top 10 class in the last 25+ years and that class had 7 top 100 recruits.  2014 and 2017 were the only other top 15 classes and both of those had at least 4 top 100 recruits. (Edit: 2001 also was top 15 with 4 top 100 recruits). Absent a surprise or a pretty significant ratings bump for an existing commit, Bailey is the only realistic shot at a top 100 recruit in this class.

RE: Class of 2022 - LDN/SG Card - 08-23-2021

Fair and maybe I am underestimating upward movement in other team's classes - sounds like 15-25 maybe more realistic... I seem to have memory of the odd late flip once a kid gets accepted - is that normal occurrence or more the exception?

RE: Class of 2022 - TrumpCard - 08-23-2021

Sure that’s possible. Less likely in a class that’s already trending towards full capacity, but still possible. Also, now that SATs aren’t required and 7th semester grades come out too late for the eary signing period, I also am guessing that late admissions will be less common.

If we are going to be calling out the recruiting "Chicken Littles," then we should also acknowledge those who advocated for Summer Official Visits, when they weren't happening, as well.

It's good that Shaw finally came around, but the only reason he did was because Covid forced his hand. I'm not sure the Chicken Littles would have been wrong had pandemic not occurred. And keep in mind, some of the same people who called for Summer Official visits, advocated for early enrollees too, several years before that also reluctantly happened.

Of course, Shaw did go on record saying Summer Official Visits were a one time thing this year, so he can still screw it up in the future, but hopefully new information - like loading up the class before the season starts - overcomes Shaw's stubbornness and changes his mind. I totally get wanting to do what is most comfortable, and there were sound reasons to make kids visit on their own dime before committing, but times change. Adapt or die.

RE: Class of 2022 - TrumpCard - 08-24-2021

+ early enrollment.

RE: Class of 2022 - SamuelMcF - 08-24-2021

OF, to answer your previous question about yielding more commits before end of summer (to which I had literally no idea the answer at the time), this year's 16 commits before end of August is much higher than any other year under Shaw. The next closest was 12, and most years were single digits.

RE: Class of 2022 - Phogge - 08-24-2021

I don’t mind being called out. LOL.

RE: Class of 2022 - Papa John - 08-24-2021

Not sure if this has already been posted, but Elic Ayomanor is scheduled to commit on Friday. The finalists are Stanford, Cal and Tennessee. (He had also taken official visits to Notre Dame and Vanderbilt.)

It's a message board; we are all entitled to opinions. And part of putting an opinion in writing in advance is that sometimes the opinion will turn out wrong.  I'm on record as being somewhat pessimistic about the upcoming season, but I will happily eat my words if we do wind up going 9-4.  I just thought it was funny the way you used the passive voice, because as Samuel pointed out, it very much sounded like a corporate apology.

Phogge learned from Doc who learned from Trump: never admit you were mistaken.

RE: Class of 2022 - LDN/SG Card - 08-25-2021

Based on some previous comments by Williams II feeling pretty good about our chances - I think I read recently that he was being recruited as a DB but can anyone else confirm?

Yes, he's being recruited as a DB. Sounds like he's ours as long as he gets admitted.

RE: Class of 2022 - BostonCard - 08-25-2021

Never thought I'd say this, but WR seems to be a position of greater need in this class.  I hope that means that the staff is feeling good about some of the receivers left on the board.
