Only for a short period Maury Wills was the Giant killer. The little gnat would somehow get to first and then lookout. With the Giants two up and nine to play in 1959 the Dodgers came to Seals Stadium with young Maury and he stole the store. Giants never recovered as they went to Chicago and were stoned by George Altman. LA and Milwaukee tied and the Dodgers won the playoff and beat the no hit Chisox in six games.
Bobbb is correct about Tommy Davis. A cinch HOFer but suffered the worst ankle break in the history of baseball. Played on for years, still hit, but was a shadow of what he once was.
Stat Man Mick. A Cuban refugee CBS cameraman took me to a place for a Cuban sandwich and horsemeat empanadas just outside of Miami years ago. He was the guy kidnapped by the Revolutionary Guard in the first Iraq war. Fantastic food and music and one of the all-time great looking MILF waitresses in the world. Staggered back to the hotel.
Brings up another story. Shooting a Films piece with the Bucs two decades ago we were told to go to Lucius Selmon's BBQ. Asked directions and were vectored to a scary neighborhood where we landed at Selmon's. Turned out it was DEWEY Selmon's, a brother D lineman who had a cup of coffee in the NFL. Wonderful. Next night to Lucious' place, classy, comfortable but the food just OK. Love the Tampa area.

Dewey had more than a cup of coffee, he played in 80 NFL games, including 65 starts. Lucious, on the other hand, never played a down in the NFL.

My mistake. The upscale place was Leroy's. Think he might have made some All Pro teams. Think they had more brothers than the St. Geme's.

Wills walks, steals second, goes to 3rd on a groundout by Gilliam, scores on a Tommy Davis fly ball, Koufax or Drysdale shuts out the other team, Dodgers win 1-0.
Except when McCovey was in the lineup v. Drysdale. 2-1 Giants on a 2 run HR by Stretch….

I hate to say it but Willie Davis running from first to third was a thing of beauty. Garry Maddox almost as good, but not quite.
One night on my way to Candlestick to see Koufax pitch. Gives up four in the first and is taken out. Missed the inning.
However the only film of the Marichal bat incident was shot by my father with me as AC for him.. The Dodgers recorded over the videotape which was SOP at the time so anytime it plays it's my dad.

Last night, a 4-2 Logan Webb victory for the Giants' fifth straight win. No Willie Davis, Willie McCovey, Garry Maddox, Juan Marichal or John Roseboro. But we got to see two Stanford alums play against each other, Giants leadoff man Austin Slater, and KC's starting pitcher, 24-year old Kris Bubic (and #40 overall selection). Bubic got the better of it, striking out Slater three times but ultimately lost the game, dropping to 0-4. BRandon Belt showed up in a pinch-hitting role now that he's off the DL, and promptly got drilled. Slater, throwing error. Gonzalez had a nice assist, throwing out a Royal at the plate by about a yard. Webb, 6-2.
And Giants are now on a run rate to win 93 games and are in the #2 W/C spot. They're 1/2 game behind St. Louis, and 3 games behind Dodgers and Padres.

That is a very good question. We’re it my call (unless things change dramatically) I’d let La Stella go. Giants won’t do that, however. So your guess is as good as mine.
6-3 with sweep of Dodgers. Good home stand.

I would dump Slater but they need RH hitters. Can't stand him looking at third strikes. Gonzalez is a keeper. Probably not to worry because somebody else will get hurt. I give Belt two more games.
Giants had Vaun Brown (tearing up the California League) and fellow OF Grant McCray of San Jose up for a morning three inning mound stint by DeScallopini. Brown hit one out.
Eugene pitcher 22 year old Randy Rodriquez (on the 40 man roster) line:
11 starts, 38.1 IP, 55 k. Giants careful with IP load.

Baseball first today. Two Houston Astros pitchers threw an “immaculate inning”. 9 pitches, 3 strikeouts. It had never been done twice in one game. I believe the same three Texas Rangers batters were the victims in both innings.
Braves 14-0 in June. Beat up bad teams. 1 vs DBacks. 2 vs A’s. 4 vs Rockies (at Coors) 4 vs Pittsburgh. 3 vs Nats. Next up Cubs for 3.
Braves could be boasting a 17 game winning streak when Giants come to Atlanta for 4.

Slater is pretty valuable. He is their best CF with Duggar out (and I don’t expect him to return). He’s got speed (which is rare on the Giants) and he hits left handed pitching very well.
Harrison had his best Richmond outing 6 IP. 1 unearned run. 4 hits 8 Ks. But 4 walks. He will need to cut those down. My guess is we see him in SF sometime in ‘23. Barring injury…..
Speaking of young pitchers. Keith Law had a list of 8 that he believed could conceivably be first round picks this year. All 8 have now had TJ. 7 this year.

It sounds to me like both Duggar and Wade will be returning this season, though I'm much more skeptical about Wade than I am Duggar.
Duggar will be returning from an oblique strain suffered in May after finishing a rehab assignment. That's a pretty straightforward injury. Wade, OTOH, has had a knee problem and this week, hamstring issue that put the brakes on a planned rehab assignment for him. I am concerned his knee is not in good shape and the hamstring is a product of compensating for the knee.

Harrison is 20. maybe see him in '24. Already promoted, will be with Sacto next year barring injury.
We may see Rodriquez along with Harrison.
I still don't like Slater. To me he's a career fourth OF on a middling team.

Not excited about Bubic, I'll grant you that. I am excited about Slater. He's probably the Giants' best outfielder. He's very fast and knows how to run: career 30 stolen bases in 33 attempts. Pretty darned good, I'd say. OBP of .365, good for #30 in all of MLB, were he to have enough AB's. He's a solid leadoff hitter, would be on pace to score 100 runs -- again, if he had the at bats. Second highest OBP on the Giants after Yaz among the regulars and semi-regulars. Highest number of walks per plate appearance, higher even than Belt or Yaz. I think he's a terrific player.

Slater is a useful, versatile player who is especially valuable to the Giants given the way that they like to mix and match and deploy the roster. But every mention of "if he had the at-bats" ignores the fact that if he had the at-bats his rate numbers would be worse, because the Giants optimize how and when they use him. He has an extreme platoon split over his career: a healthy 278/369/468 (125 OPS+) vs LHP and a terrible 225/313/335 (76 OPS+) vs RHP.
He's actually 33-36 in his career in SB, but stealing one base a month doesn't move the needle. Still, a guy who can play multiple positions, hit LHP well, pinch hit and pinch run, is useful to have in these days of short benches, even though his numbers would take a big hit if he were playing every day and getting 600 plate appearances in a season, instead of being used selectively as he is.
