I'm just too old.
Pitt outscores Stanford in points 110-102, but Stanford wins the electoral college 3-2.

But Wow Wow Wow!
What a gutsy win

Stanford fending off match points, down 14-13.
Tied at 14!
Blyashov with its first lead of set 5!
Stanford wins! Blyashov again!
If Blyashov can play like she did tonight consistently they actually could be a threat in the tournament. Everything was good except her serve in this one.

Stanford was down 20-24 in set 1 and finished on a 6-0 scoring run with Elia Rubin serving. Stanford was down 11-14 in set 5 and finished on a 5-0 scoring run with Elia Rubin, again, serving.
Stanford alone in first place in the ACC. Wow, just wow.

Wow, such grit.
Came back to tie it 11-11, only to slip behind 11-14. But then 5 in a row to win. Wow.

I was driving and listening to the 5th set on KZSU in the car. The two student announcers Kyle and Annika (sp?) were going quite berserk, just about screaming at the top of their lungs. I haven't been a good enough fan this season and lack a frame of reference. But the last ~ 20 minutes or so sounded pretty impressive on KZSU!

Congrats to Kevin Hambley, who notched his 400th career head coaching win.

I should be ashamed and embarrassed of myself for turning off the TV when Pitt was up 14-11 in the fifth set. Wow what a comeback and strong serve game from Rubin.
We need this version of Blyashov every time. Even her serve receive game was good.
Parks setting is still questionable.

In both sets it could easily have gone the other way. In the first set Rubin got an ace on a ball that hit the net and barely made it over; it could have been a serving error giving Pitt the match. In the fifth with Pitt at match point Rubin hit a ball that was initially ruled long by the line judge but went off the block.
Both of those plays were a fraction of an inch from going the other way.

OMFG, what a match.
That may be the most exciting regular-season home win for Stanford since the reverse sweep upset of Washington in Burnham Pavilion in 2004.

I love that Pitt ran onto the court thinking they had won, but ended up leaving with only the sour taste of a premature celebration. The chickens were counted, but they dropped the eggs. What a Pitty!

Indeed. It would be nice if it spurs us on to the same season ending…

So we saw something new in this one - the middle wasn’t dominant and the pins carried the day.
- only 14 kills for the middles - so down about 1.2/set from normal and they only hit about.286.
- Blyashov .349, 20 kills, 4 blocks, 4 digs and no reception errors. Her serve was a bit off, but overall that was a superstar performance.
- Harvey hit .275 with 15 kills and Rubin had 16 kills but only hit .209. She had to take out a lot of the trash though.
- Really rough day for Etzler receiving serve - 4 errors. She has only 7 for the season though I am not sure if that 7 includes the Pitt match.

The Pitt coach used a really questionable challenge earlier in the 5th set, asking for a net violation on Stanford. It was unsuccessful so I don't believe he had a challenge available for Rubin's hit on match point at 11-14. I was ready to turn off the game when the back referee signaled that it had gone long. Point Pitt, match over, Pitt starts to celebrate. But wait!! The up referee signaled a touch. Point Stanford. Not challenged. Play on.
Then I think it was at 13-14 that Pitt was called for a violation that I did not entirely understand. The announcers tried to explain in the moment that it was something not allowed by a back row player. Can anyone elaborate?

Yeah, I understood/caught about as much as you did and would also be interested in more info. Initially I thought our player was being called for a carry violation and thus my emotions had already started to dip again. What a rollercoaster!

I was at Maples and don't know what the error was with Pitt up 14-13. I think the Pitt coach was complaining about it but he did not have a challenge. One of the only times the crowd at Maples loudly booed a visiting coach. I thought the challenge regarding the net violation was a critical error. It wasn't close to a violation and took away the chance to challenge the touch on Rubin's kill when we were down 14-11.
Amazing final set. I thought we were toast when we got down 11-8 but we pulled even at 11-11. I REALLY thought we were toast on the two Pitt blocks and Babcock kill that put us down 14-11. There was no way lightning was going to strike twice in the same match. But Rubin steadied the ship and her serving run kept them out of system just enough to open the door for us to push our way through it. The crowd at the end of the 1st and 5th sets was amazing. A combination of shock and elation. So glad I got to be there.
Cheers,
Pete F.

It was a back row attack violation. Here's a nice article that explains the rule:
https://www.cornnation.com/2019/7/13/18631987/nebraska-huskers-womens-volleyball-strategy
I missed spotting the number of the player who committed the violation, but it's usually the setter who gets in trouble that way. I.e., setter is in the back row but comes up to the net to set or maybe to rescue a ball that's about to go awry, and ends up violating the rule..

It was a bad pass and so Pitt’s setter hit the ball over instead of trying to set. But she was back row and hit the ball above the plane of the net so it was a back row violation.

The symmetry of the end of the first set and fifth set is interesting. First set, we were down 21-24, and score 5 straight points with Rubin serving. And the fifth set, we were down 11-14, and score 5 straight points with Rubin serving, same rotation. Pitt's gotta hate that bit of deja vu.
Also loved seeing the fire in Lizzy Andrew after her massive block on Babcock while down match point 12-14 in the fifth. She usually seems so stoic, but she definitely met the moment.
