RE: WBB: Stanford 89 Gonzaga 58 - M T - 11-10-2024

Sigh....  ESPN announcers...   Gonzaga was down 30 points and they were talking about how good the Gonzaga players are, based on last year's accolades.

And, they talked about how questionable the rebounding might be when Stanford plays someone with length.  It is clear they didn't look at the WSU game.  The 6'6" player only got 3 rebounds in 18 minutes.

Several times, it sounded as though the announcers considered this the first game of Stanford's season. For the announcers, I guess it was.

-----
Any one know why ESPN dumped this game to the netherlands, apparently at the last second.
I couldn't find it until after the 1st quarter was over.

---------
FG% (3FG%) by quarter
50% (75%); 47.1% (50%); 46.7% (50%); 40.0% (50%)
Game: 46.2% (54.2%)

OR% 25.7%
DR% 71.4%
Total 97.1 Stanford was out rebounded over the full game. It didn't feel like that during the game.
Ahhhh... It was the last quarter when the subs were in.
Stanford got 2 OR + 2 DR. Gonzaga got 4 OR + 7 DR.
Through 3 quarters Stanford OR% was 7/25 = 28%; DR% was 23/29 = 79.3%. Total 107.3, which is good.

It’s early but it’s a very nice coaching start. The team is decently coordinated early despite the player turnover. The players seem confident and settled. You can see a plan on the court. Unclear if they can handle a really big team, and if they can keep shooting this way.  But coaching can only do so much for either of those anyway.

Based on how well KP has done in preparing the current roster and how well she's done with recruiting, I am going to make the bold prediction that she will lead Stanford women's basketball to multiple national championships.

i like the new substitution pattern. 2 guards rotate in and out together. not something tara did. shades of charli turner thorne.

i suspect it helps the accuracy on 3s to be well-rested.

While I hope that is true, I would not expect it.  In this age of pay-to-play, Foothill College could field a NCAA Div-1 championship team if a donor wanted it enough.  The best players will be bought, year by year.  It is not the coach that determines that.

Really very impressed and pleasantly surprised with both offense and defense,
an indication of great coaching and preparation.  I was expecting a tight match.

I suspect you're right.  Good observation.  Tired legs mean the longer shots come up short.

Is it possible to bring in another mike and ask them to speak into it? I couldn't hear a thing Chloe said and sometimes Mary A.

RE: WBB: Stanford 89 Gonzaga 58 - MV72018 - 11-11-2024

Stanford's game against Gonzaga today was one of the best-played games of basketball I have seen either Stanford basketball team play in a number of years. Excellent D, crisp ball movement, good guard play, excellent trey shooting,  balanced scoring, selfless play, and taking high percentage shots. This team could become something special over the coming months.

RE: WBB: Stanford 89 Gonzaga 58 - BosCard - 11-11-2024

When we lost to Gonzaga last year we had 16 turnovers.  Yesterday we had 5.  Last year our entire offense was force the ball to Brink/Iriafen (that led to a bunch of turnovers because the defense could anticipate passes) or set up a bunch of screens for Jump (also led to moving screen turnovers because the team was trying so hard to free Jump).  This year our offense is so much more diversified with any of the 9 core rotation players could be the leading scorer or be initiating the offense with the ball in their hands.  This makes us harder to defend and also harder to anticipate which seems to be leading to far fewer turnovers.

I'm getting to love this TEAM -- so very much a team, in so many ways.

Here are an article about the game -- not much analytical here, but oh well -- from this morning's e-edition of the SF Chron:  (should not be behind a paywall)

Strange that's behind a paywall. It shouldn't be, since I used the "gift" option. I'll give another try -- now should be ok

Sorry, my bad, the first link did work, but I skimmed it too quick, it wasn't behind a paywall, but wanted my email registered to be able to continue with reading the article.
So I keyed in my email and it said: "signup failed, please try again later"
Oh well, its the Chronicle!

RE: WBB: Stanford 89 Gonzaga 58 - acerep - 11-11-2024

I've posted my report to the Fast Break Club site, www.stanfordfbc.org.

RE: WBB: Stanford 89 Gonzaga 58 - joemontes - 11-11-2024

So Stanford's early season regular rotation consists of the followng 9 players:

"BIGs" - AGARA 6'2 ; DEMETRE 6'3 ; STEVENSON 6'2
Wings - BOSGANA 6'2 ; OGDEN 6'1
Guards - LEPOLO 5'7 ; HARRIEL 5'10 ; HEAL 5'10 ; CLARDY 5'10

And the rest of the team:

"BIGs" - UMEH 6'4 ; PETERSON 6'3
Wing - PAPADAKI 5'11
Guards - IJIWOYE 5'6 ; GREEN 5'9

I think with her height and deft under the basket,
UMEH will eventually be part of that regular rotation,
especially when Stanford goes up against teams
with big frontline.

Coach Paye has played lineups where Ogden is playing the 4.   I like the flexibility of our lineups because if a starter gets 2 quick fouls in the first quarter it’s not that big of a deal.  Whereas last year, early foul trouble for Brink or Iriafen was devastating.
