Might be worth looking at what we recruited over the last four years:
2021
Brooke Demetre, 6-3 Wing, CA. Ranked # 4 in her Class.
Jzaniya Harriel 5-9 Guard CA 4.75 GPA ranked # 1 Nor Cal and #52 ESPN
Eleni Bosgana, 6-2 Wing from Greece
Kiki Iriafen 6-2 4/5 from So Cal ranked # 9
2022
Lauren Betts, 6-7 Post CO. Ranked ESPN #1, PN 4.5*, ASGR #1. Committed to Stanford 13 Jan 2021! Official Visit 10-2-2021.
Talana Lepolo, 5-7 PG CA, PN 4.5*, ESPN #70, ASGR #43. Has visited. Committed Sep 2021.
Indya Nivar 5-9 G NC, ESPN #20, ASGR #36. Stanford is in her top 3 as of 7-Sep-2021. Official visit 9-24-2021. Committed 17-Nov-2021.
2023
Sunaja (Nunu) Agara | 5'11" Guard | ranked 40 (graded 93) by ESPN | ranked #14 by PN | Committed 25-Oct-2021
Courtney Ogden, 6-1 Wing GA, Ranked ESPN #12, ASGR #43, PN #7. A tweet said we offered 2-Oct-2021. Visited 2-Oct-2021. | committed 18-Nov-2021
Chloe Clardy, 5-9 Guard from Arkansas. Ranked ESPN #28, PN 4.5*. Committed 5 Aug 2022.
2024
Kennedy Umeh, 6-3 Forward from Maryland. Ranked ESPN #40, PN #20. Committed 8/7/2023. Her name has been spelled "Ume" on some web sites. Signed 11/8/23.
Wrenwyck (Shay) Ijiwoye, 5-6 Guard, Arizona, ESPN #44, PN #40. Has visited. Visited again 2/20/23. Has an offer 2/27/23. Committed 9/1/23! Signed 11/8/23.
Harper Peterson NorCal 6-3 Wing, ESPN #84, PN #35. Offered 6/24/2023. Official visit 9/30/2023. In her final 3 as of 11/3/2023. Signed 11/9/23.
We lost the #1 player from 2022, the #9 player from 2021, the #20 player from 2022.
It has been talked about before, but Demetre has not played as the #4 player in her class, which is disappointing, and may be an indictment of Paye if other players don't live up to their rankings. You could make the case that there is enough talent on the team to be in the top 25, though, with Agara, ranked (I'm using ESPN and prospect nation) 14/40, Ogden ranked 7/12, Umeh ranked 40/20, Ijiwoye 40/44, Clardy 28/UR, and Peterson ranked 35/84, plus Demetre. That is a solid nucleus even after what we have lost, but devoid of star power. One year is way too soon to come to judgments and I am very curious to see what Paye does in the long term, assembling and keeping talent on the team and getting it to play good basketball. Early returns are just that, early, but you would rather have the indicators you see for Smith than for Paye.

I did keep that in mind. IIRC, that MVP candidate was in the transfer portal at the same time as Kiki IriaFEN. KS talked his star into leaving the portal and staying at Stanford. KP, well,…
But didn't he also have two excellent players leave? Or was that impossible for him to stop?
I assume you're referring to Stoyakevic [sp?] and Angel. Yes, they left. But I'd argue that he replaced them with two pretty good transfers -- Blakes and Sellers, so that was, arguably, a net wash.
Stojakovic, Angel, Carlyle and Murrell all left after last season. Angel and Murrell were grad transfers. I believe that one or both applied to Stanford grad school to be able to continue their Stanford careers, but were not admitted. Not much that KS could do about that.

Maybe I've missed it, but has KP gotten in anyone's face? She seems pretty reserved to me. There were times when Tara would just go off on players. Walking many paces onto the court to discipline Kiki in last year's tourney and having stern words with Cam for silly fouls are both examples that come to mind (and both were star players).
I understand coaches have different styles. I always admired Tara's blend of being both a disciplinarian and a good natured coach. I just haven't seen too many mild-mannered coaches succeed (Wooden, others?). Practically all successful coaches have a fiery side to them. I just wonder if KP has that. That's why I'm asking - I just haven't observed it myself.

Well, the players have to be the kind of people to respond to that kind of coaching. We don't want to give too many incentives to transfer out...

Plus, Angel wanted to stay and there was no grad school fit even though he had a near 4 point. And, Andre received a chunk from Cal. He's a good, but streaky, shooter, and would be helpful to us, but he is far from approaching his McDonalds status.

To me the early returns show Coach Smith on the right track and for Coach Paye I don't have the same confidence.
I think is because Coach S seems to be getting better seasons or even their best season yet, out of several of his players.
Of course Maxime at top of this list, but others too, arguably Sellers, Blakes, Gealer, Agarwal among them.
More playing time helps but that's not all of it.
For Coach P seems like Nunu has stepped up big time, but who else?
Bosgana? at times, for certain games, but consistently?
Arguably Heal, MAS, Demetre, and maybe others having flat or significantly down seasons.

Based on all those chalk talks over the years I always felt that Kate might be too harsh for Stanford. While she was not really hot tempered, I did always feel that she was more hot tempered than Tara. I asked a stupid question once and got my head bitten off. Whatever else you want to say about Kate and any of her defects--being too gentle is not one of them. She softened some in recent years as I think she learned the need, and the fact that she learned to develop more tools in her relational tool box seemed to me a mark in her favor. Tara had to do this too, by the way, and was interviewed several times about it.

Just FYI, these are not the final rankings by the end of their HS careers. Demetre was at one point ranked 4th, but she ultimately setled in at 11th by ESPN, Nunu was 37th, Ogden was 10th, Clardy was 39th, etc.
To me, based on HS recruit rankings, Nunu and Lepolo have overperformed, Demetre and Ogden (so far) have underperformed, and the rest are about what you'd expect based on their final rankings. (Though Clardy's development this season is one of the few unqualified happy developments this season, and she may well end up better than we could reasonably expect someone ranked 39th). I'm not seeing a real over/under development pattern one way or the other here.
Also, you have take these rankings with a grain of salt: in the 2023 class, Madison Booker was ranked 12th (hah!), Tessa Johnson 25th, and Hannah Hidalgo (5th) was one spot below Cierra Toomey (4th), who played five minutes and went scoreless against us last weekend when UNC visited.

My use of the word "fiery" was meant to be more on the emotional/inspirational side. That could include both anger and praise, but there's more of an emotional element to it. When you say "harsh", "hot tempered", and "softened", that sounds more like she uses mean words, but doesn't necessarily show emotion. Does she get emotional (not just negative, but positive too) at the games? Again, I don't go to the games live and they don't show her much on the tube, so I just don't know.

If we are going off of recruiting rankings (which is the metric we should be using for this discussion), on paper, WBB is MUCH more talented than MBB. It is incredible what CKS has been able to do with this MBB roster. Yes, Maxime is an All-American but Blakes and Sellers are the only other players on the team who would be Top-7 contributors on other ACC teams.
Also, I don't understand why people still think Angel tried to get into grad school at Stanford and was denied. He had a 4.0 in Econ. He did not even apply for a coterm - he was ready to move on and did so. Not an admissions issue whatsoever.

I'll start watching more carefully. She does get up and out of her chair more often than Tara used to, but I think all the coaches are still imitating Tara's demeanor, which was mainly to sit on the bench with a stiff upper lip. It was always such a contrast when someone like Mulkey came, who was always standing and shouting, often over the line, while Tara sat in her chair almost the whole time, standing up only occasionally to talk to the point guard during interludes like an opposing free throw attempt, or to ask an official for an explanation. The contrast made the opposing coach look like an angry child, and I think it generally worked in Tara's favor, since when she DID talk to an official she came across as a concerned professional. As far as inspiring players during a game--I think Tara could give some doozies of halftime talks, but I don't remember more than Xs and Os on the sideline.
I sit opposite the bench, though. (I can read some of the notes the TV broadcasters use, but alas, don't get near our coaches who are across the way.) There are some Cardboarders who sit right behind the bench and can hear the conversations. Maybe one of them will chime in with observations about Kate and Tara and their communication style to players when on the sidelines, whether they differ, etc....

You should take all rankings with a grain of salt; players over and under perform all the time, and that's why I said these are early returns. At the end of the day, collegiate coaching is a mix of who you get and how much you get out of them. So far, we are doing alright in terms of who we've gotten (recruiting) under Paye in terms of the class of 2025, though all those recruits started being recruited while Vanderver was still the coach, and a single season does not a long term trend make. But we got a good class of 2025 so that's a start. Figuring out the second part of the equation is harder, because it's really hard to judge the counterfactual (how much a different coach would have gotten out of this same group of players). The best you can do is project how what might have expected given the talent, but absent a detailed talent evaluation, all you have is recruiting rankings. And I think that here we might have been able to do better. The average team with players with similar recruiting rankings should probably be a borderline top-25 team, and we are a bit away from there. So the question is whether this is was mis-ranking the players or failing to get enough out of them. I think you need multiple seasons and a variety of different players to know for sure, but as I said, the early indicator is that this team should be doing better.

Seems like in assessing a team there is more to consider than raw rankings of the players, such as years of experience playing in college, and especially experienced players at important positions like, in our case, at point guard (no Lepolo, in a point guard heavy conference) and the post (only Agara). IMHO those holes are enough to explain the perceived discrepancy between expectations based on rankings and record.

Yep. Agara is pretty much alone in the post. We either aren't jumpers (Stevenson and Demetre), or not as strong as opponents(Bosgana). Oh for the days of Brink, Kiki, Fran, Prechtel, ...and Betts all on one team.

kate is now relying heavily on 2 freshmen - shay and kennedy. i suppose it will be a test of one skill of the coaching staff to see if either or both have improved significantly by season's end.

Meanwhile, ticket prices for Thursday's Ucla at USC game in Los Angeles are over $ 100 for some upper deck seats and over $ 700 for courtside, with someone trying to sell a pair of midcourt seats for over $ 1,000 each!?

In 2019, I sat courtside to watch our team beat USC. I paid $11 or 12.

Wow, has USC ever sold out the Galen Center for a WBB game? It holds over 10,000.

It looks like last year's edition of the Ucla at Usc game was a sell-out at the Galen Center.
