thanks for the friendly amendment. she's a grad student this year. i didn't realize you could play more than 1 year as a grad student. will next year be her covid year?

maybe another example of you now get much more money if you stay in school as a star women's basketball player than if you go to the nba.

For the lead-in to the UCLA/UConn game ESPN played the song I like big butts, but changed the words to I like big Betts.  Obviously it was intended to be complimentary toward Betts but I wonder what she thought about it.

Notably, it was none other than Chiney who kicked off that segment, and I'll say this - Chiney is among our most loyal alums, and despite that she was very, very gracious about acknowledging that transferring was the right call for Betts. I didn't read her as in any way being disrespectful.

Fudd completed her fourth academic year and third year of eligibility (she redshirted her junior year after tearing her right ACL).  She is a graduate student because she earned her undergraduate degree in three years.  Most masters programs are two years; at Stanford you can get a co-terminal degree, which typically involves getting an undergraduate and masters degrees in five years.

From this letter to the Connecticut Assembly (https://www.cga.ct.gov/2024/appdata/TMY/2024HB-05048-R000220-Fudd,%20Azzi,%20Student%20Athlete-University%20of%20Connecticut-Supports-TMY.PDF) I think she was planning on getting her master's in sports management, but may be pursuing an MBA.

Which probably means Yukon will be excellent next year, like they always are. They showed against UCLA that they can be outstanding even when Bueckers has a so-so game. Geno says he has such a great bunch of ladies, and they are so much fun to coach that he doesn't want to retire, so he will still be around. Look for them to be in the final four again next year. Look for UCLA to be there too, and it wouldn't surprise me if South Carolina is also.

SMU has hired Adia Barnes has head coach of its women’s basketball team.  They are very serious about every facet of their athletic program . Money will not be a limiter. ACC may rue the day they let these guys in.

Yeah. these Texas teams seem to have a big desire to excel in the major sports and a lot of the $$$$ to back it up, which is what it takes in this brave new world of college athletics. Expect them to do very well.

It would not shock me one bit to see SMU or Texas Tech buy their way in to the SEC/Super Conference.

Speaking of SMU, reading that may be where Jzanya is heading:

UConn is wiping out SC. Let's face it, they are the best in the land. Even with JuJu, USC would have had big problems hanging with UConn.

UConn held Kiki to just 3 of 15 from the field in 40 minutes of play. Amazing. Geno is clearly a great coach and recruiter.

Finally a healthy UConn team and they’ve looked like the best team in the country the last month. Bueckers for how great her career has been deserves a title. She’s a stud. Also Geno is what 71, his years of coaching are dwindling. Could be his last title. I’ve always enjoyed watching the best UConn teams. They play the right way. Great defense and offense and just a fun style to watch.

RE: WBB: Other teams - JohnR34231 - 04-06-2025

Yeah, no doubt who the best team in the nation is right now. They may not have been earlier in the year but they sure are now.
They just might be next year too even without Bueckers. Sarah Strong is one of the best players in the nation as a freshman.

Yep, I echo what the 2 of you are saying, with just 1 addition/slight modification:

If you are the ACC (with SMU) or Big12 (with TexasTech) ...this is EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT !

As a Conference, you Want member Universities to Go ALL IN (MoneySpending. NIL, Facilities, etc wise) ...on the HighVisibleSports & To Create Top15 Type Programs in those 'Highly Visible, Highly Watched Sports' !

If SMU starts winning in Football & MensBasketball and becomes a Perennial Top15 Football & MensBasketball Program...that is GREAT for the ACC !

I think what the ACC Conference Office will not like, is members who dont GO ALL IN $$$,$$$,$$$ on these Highly Visible Sports , & who languish in these Highly Visible Sports with perennial Losing or NonMajorPostseason type seasons !!

RE: WBB: Other teams - PVTree - 04-06-2025

Unfortunately, Yukon proved to be the best team. They blew out both of their FF opponents. It was a great coaching job to put the pieces together with 3 key players and some other complimentary players. You can never count them out.

Funny, I seem to remember the ACC tripping all over itself in its hurry to tout its phenomenal Olympic medal winner programs several months ago… based in very large measure on a school that wasn’t particularly big in the “highly visible” sports…

76lsjumb,

(1) I see your perspective, but I think its important to 'also remember' that no matter what the ACC touts now, that:

• When the Pac12 broke up, we (The Great Stanford, with all our great Olympic Sports & Academics) were literally 'on our knees begging the ACC to let us in, even as a non-paid member'.

•The ACC did not Immediately extend an invitation to Stanford, upon the breakup of the Pac12

• The ACC initially voted to 'Not let Stanford into the ACC' (ie we didn't get enough votes); [If Stanford Football were Top15 and Stanford Mens Basketball were Top15, where the ACC members thought our Admission would bring 'Eyes & Money, Interest, Buzz & Excitement' ' into the Conference, would the ACC members have rejected our initial request for entry ...so flippantly ? .

• Although the ACC might 'tout' certain things, ....as they say, 'watch what people do, not what they tout'; Remember, as great as we think Stanford is, the ACC was so impressed with us that they:
(a) 'Voted against us being let in initially (yes I know there were intraconference political reasons for this), & also
(b) They told us 'the only way we let you in the ACC club is if you agree not to get payouts for a very long time'

• Yes, our Olympic sports are great, and I am proud of our Olympic sports, but I think at the time of the 'Pac12 breakup; if we...
[a] had been Top15 in Football & Top15 in Mens Basketball,
[b] had Spent Top Dollars for 'Recognizable, Charismatic, BigName-Recognition Coaches in Football & Mens Basketball,
[c] and in those '2 visible sports we were bringing TV networks to Stanford Campus to Full arenas and Stadiums to see High 4star phenoms in Football & Mens Basketball competing Nationally in NewYearsDay Bowls in Football and Making Elite8s in Mens Basketball,
....I think the ACC would have been far more eager to 'add Stanford to the ACC' ...& would have extended much more (Financially) than a mere 'word salad of touting our Olympic Sports'.

(2) The main point here is that Conferences like the ACC and Big12 (& their Leadership) will like SMU & TexasTech going 'all out' in Football & Mens Basketball', .. Being Top15 in Football and Mens Basketball brings Eyes & Interest (and therefore Television Network Money) to their respective conferences !
But I see your perspective.

RE: WBB: Other teams - chrisk - 04-07-2025

The ACC commissioner Phillips (former Northwestern AD) was all in on Stanford joining, but he had 3 or 4 recalcitrant members. Those schools weren’t concerned about Stanford’s football prowess; they were concerned about how their slice of the pie would be affected. Stanford is not getting nothing like SMU. Stanford is getting a reduced share.

RE: WBB: Other teams - Lorcan - 04-07-2025

The transfer portal just gets downright depressing sometimes. It's weird to see how diminished Notre Dame has been this off season so far - Kate Koval, Olivia Miles, Kylee Watson all transferring leaving Hannah Hidalgo and Niele Ivey to find complimentary parts for her in the portal.

LSU made a splash with getting Kate Koval today - and that's a brobdingnagian get at a position of need for Kim Mulkey as LSU adjusts to life without Aneesah Morrow.

Maryland has been active with a reload by signing Yarden Garzon (Indiana) and Gracie Merkle (Penn State) - they'll be a force with Smikle, McDaniel, and Kubek all returning alongside Poffenbarger and McLean.

Clemson also made a splash by signing Rachael Rose (Wofford) and Demeara Hinds (Wake). Gal Raviv of Quinnipiac is sailing down the coast to Miami. Baylor grabbed Tailah Scott, and the wheel keeps turning. I'm sure that many more splashes will occur before this is all over.

RE: WBB: Other teams - Lorcan - 04-07-2025

I don't think we're expected to make any splashes in the Portal this season - that said, we've managed to hold onto our key parts for next year which amounts to success from my perspective.

Aarinsalo in the Portal out of UCLA, Del Rosario departs LSU.
