RE: WBB -- Stanford 77 -- UNC 71 (OT) -

Ok, finally had the time to sit down and watch. All in all, this was, from tip to final whistle, the best game I've seen us play this season. UNC has a ton of talent, and they generally executed well (minus down the stretch and at the charity stripe), so I'm incredibly proud of how we battled to come back late in the 4th and then take over in OT. Random observations:
-I honestly don't think, overall, the bad calls went against us with too much disparity. Several times when we got a really lousy whistle the refs clearly compensated within a few possessions. And I hate to say it, but most of the fouls on Agara (minus the last one) and Somfai really WERE fouls.
-I was incredibly impressed with Nyla Harris. I don't think she was getting unduly favorable whistles, I just think she's fast, physical, and really knows how to move around the paint to get the best opening. What Banghart was thinking keeping her out of most of the last few minutes and much of OT is beyond me, because to me we didn't have an answer for her.
-I am officially, fully, on the Eschmeyer bandwagon. MAS does little wrong, but she doesn't do a ton right. Eshmeyer has terrific instincts on offense and is mostly a capable defender with the occasional blown read. But it's wild to me that we didn't think to match her up against Toomey sooner, because she is the perfect counter: equally tall, equally lanky, no less physical. Neither Nunu nor Somfai have the length to counter Toomey. When Toomey was in, Alex should have been.
-Shay gets the game ball because if you're 5'6" and you lead the box score in ORs, that says you're hustling harder than anyone else. She also was decisive to our comeback when we almost got down double digits early in the second. I don't really understand why we don't see her sooner and more often.
-I'm struggling to think of a player who has transformed in the course of half a season more than Ogden. Go back and look at our early season threads - a number of us, I believe myself included, were questioning whether she should even be a starter, and lamenting her failure to live up to potential. I am not sure what clicked, but I think she's presently at least as good as Haley Jones at creating her own shot, and possibly better since she doesn't need as much runway and she can hit reliably from outside. I'm so pleased.
-Last, it was kind of telling to me how much Antonelli was crediting Paye for adjustments and tactics for how much our board treats Paye like she knows literally nothing about basketball. There are few commentators who are more detail oriented and aware than Antonelli so I think I'm going to have to trust her judgment that our coaching is more part of the solution than the problem - with the singular exception that I just don't think we're giving minutes to the right people the right way.

I was traveling on Sunday, so didn't read the CardBoard until after I watched the game. Some of today's early CardBoard comments were, uh well, familiar echoes.
Many people have made comments I agree with about the game (and the posts) so I'll avoid repeating those.
Isn't it nice to have competing assertions about who was the player of the game? Nah, that must be due to the individuals and not the coaches.
Personally, I like Ijiwoe coming in off the bench to change the pace of the play. To the opponents, it must be sorta like when a single player has very different gears.
I want to caution people to temper their impression of Eschmeyer's play late in the game because the opponents are going to play differently when they have a number of fouls. It seemed she played much better today than I've seen her before.
Some interesting & perhaps surprising
stats:
The most positive +/- were: Ogden: 14; Somfai & Leopolo: 10
The most negative +/- was: Clardy: -7
Ijiwoe: +1
(NOTE: Q5 stats show the Q4 stats. Something is not right.)
In most basketball games, there are many, many fouls that aren't called. So to say "those were fouls" is a bit hollow without pointing out other fouls that weren't called. At least twice, fouls were called on Stanford players after the NC post hooked them with her arm to put them behind her and clear a path to the basket. Last I looked at the rules, that was a foul.
Antonelli pointed out that Clardy's last second attempt at a basket in Q4 was to avoid the chance for NC to get a rebound & a timeout to advance the ball. When the ball left her hand, there was 0.4 seconds on the clock. In looking at the play, I see how that play can work either for a made FG or for a foul called on the post coming across to help discourage the shot. Even if Clardy had been charged with an offensive foul, NC at best gets the ball (in their end) with 0.3 seconds on the clock. Good clock management & play calling.
Is it a statistical oddity that Stanford has drawn Chuck Gonzalez as a ref 4 times in a 7 game span? All in consequential games.

Wait, wait, wait. Oh, geez, that's insane. And I thought Brenda Pantoja was reffing nearly every USC game I saw. When we played Oregon, I was shocked to see her do our game and even questioned whether she'd accidentally showed up early. This is crazy.

By the way, we are now 2-1 in the ACC and 13-3 overall, with two Top 25 wins and 3 road wins (the road win vs North Carolina still being a Top 25 win even after the new AP poll came out today).
Through 16 games last season we were 10-6 and 1-3 in ACC play, with 0 road or Top 25 wins. Our 3 road wins already exceeds our two
total road wins last season and we had 0 top 25 wins last season.

Super impressive wins from both men's and women's BB in 2 games over 2 days, both taking down the #16 teams in country.

OK, the refs. People are complaining about Chuck, but I don’t think he was the worst ref in the NC game. That honor goes to Ken Nash in my book. He made foul calls that he was not in position to see if contact was made or not. A couple of times, there wasn’t contact. When he was in position and there was contact, he often swallowed his whistle. I think Chuck is an average referee, not great, not horrible. As another poster remarked about Brenda Pantoja, it was interesting that she ref’d a Tennessee - Louisville game in Brooklyn, then was at Chase the next day refereeing the Stanford game. I didn’t like some of the calls in that game, but overall, I think she is a good referee.

Definitely not among the worst, and definitely consistent. Biased in favor of guards, but otherwise has a "let 'em play" attitude. But very, very consistent. If you see her on your floor, you definitely know what you can get away with and what you can't. Depending on our personnel, I love to see her do our games, or hate it.

I feel obligated to recognize that Talana Lepolo had arguably her best game of the year yesterday. I say that for two reasons:
1. she made several excellent passes to teammates cutting to the hoop for layups, contributing to her excellent total of 7 assists); and
2. she made 4 big FTs in crunch time.
Great job!

I complain about Chuck because he’s really bad and this dates back to last season. Kinda like Tiffany Bird was for Stanford games in years past. But Chuck is terrible overall.

to my eyes the bad call disparity was concentrated in offensive fouls. the announcers commented on this, and kate protested forcefully: yes, nunu and lara were pushing off, so the foul calls were fair. problem is that when unc repeatedly pushed off at least as strongly (shay was shoved 10' to the ground), the refs said play on.
i, too, thought i saw make-up calls, but those didn't bring nunu back in the game (turns out we did fine without her, but still...)

Basically agree with everything you're saying! I didn't object to the calls we got, just some of the ones they didn't, as you say. But I also just think they had two experienced and savvy back to basket bigs, and we don't (Nunu has great moves but she's just too short to really excel), so we were resorting to fouling more when trying to get space, whereas they could maneuver more. Harris was so impressive to me because she's only 6'2" but really deceptively athletic and agile. Reminded me a little bit of Nneka, who wasn't always the tallest or the strongest, but she would dance as many times as it took to get the open shot.
Eschmeyer actually has great back to basket moves for a frosh and has the height and reach to make those work. As someone noted, Toomey had four fouls for much of that stretch, but Alex was still making the shots drop.
All in all, this was just a really solid win, which we won by all three positions (guards, shooting guards/forwards, and bigs) making key contributions.
