RE: Class of 2022 - LDN/SG Card - 10-24-2021

As long as he can add some good weight I reckon at 6-2 he would profile to play inside - according to scout info he has played multiple spots on Dline - I guess he is unlikely to be a 330 space eater but at 300+ with good explosion he could be disruptive force through A gaps?

Also I do wonder sometimes if we could sometimes play 4 Dline especially in situations where we are struggle to stop run - Moi might profile well as DT alongside a bigger NT - it would be nice if we could stop people running the ball sometimes....

Anyway great to get another recruit for the trenches and doesn't hurt that he waved goodbye to the bears....

May he be the next Bryson Tremayne.

Shaw attended the Mater Dei / Servite game where David Bailey’s 3.5 sacks may have been the difference. Greg Biggins at 247sports still thinks Stanford may be the team to beat.

Ah but first may the real Brycen Tremayne also be the next Brycen Tremayne.

I note that Stanford offer recipient Jacksonville DL Hayden Schwartz recently decommitted from Nebraska.  I assume that Jaxson Moi was the last slot available for a DL, but it'd be interesting to know whether there's any continuing dialgoue between Stanford and Schwartz.

When it comes to DL, we need to learn to be opportunistic.  If a good, qualified recruit comes around, even if we have "filled" the position (and I'm not sure that we have even with 3, given the holes in earlier classes), we need to be comfortable with taking more players.  We have, if anything, underfilled our scholarships, and taking an extra scholarship player at this critical position of need is probably better than having a tight end play both ways out of desperation.

I agree.    Does Shaw??

Having an excess of d-linemen is not a bad thing.  Stanford has had a history of d-linemen making the transition to the o-line with success.

RE: Class of 2022 - TrumpCard - 10-27-2021

Shaw now has 3 DLs this year after getting 3 DLs last year. Those are good numbers. Some of those guys were more lightly recruited, but that’s more a result of failing to land the priority recruits than failing to recognize the need. I’m not totally against recruiting another really solid DL recruit for ‘22, but I’d be interested in knowing how the scholarship numbers look. Does a 4th DL mean only 2 WRs?  If so, I might balk.

Edit: I’ll try to answer my own question:
Here is the personnel chart sorted by year:
https://thecardboard.org/board/showthread.php?tid=21597
There are 59 scholarship players in the ‘19-‘21 classes, and they presumably will all return, plus hopefully Pakola. There are 21 entering scholarship players already committed in the ‘22 class. That’s 81. There are 13 fourth year seniors and 7 fifth year players currently on scholarship. I’m not familiar enough with the COVID eligibility rules to know whether any fifth year players could return. And we know the staff is pushing to land Bailey and Reuben. So here’s the question:

Are there fewer than 2 guys likely to return for a fifth or sixth year in 2022?

BC has done a good job of pointing out that we've been in an almost continuous state of not filling our full scholarship allotment.  This hasn't been a real tradeoff we've had to face for several years.

Unless things have significantly changed, its more like, does 4th DL mean one fewer walk-on given a scholarship.

Sorry for belatedly addressing this.  See my edit above.

RE: Class of 2022 - BostonCard - 10-27-2021

Because of COVID-19, scholarship numbers are a royal mess, and technically, almost anyone can come back.  That being said:
There are 59 scholarship freshmen, sophomores, or juniors on the roster, of which only Kyu Blu Kelly is at any risk for an early departure.  That leaves up to 26 scholarships available (since we now apparently do occasionally do early enrollment and 1 player could enroll counting to the 2021 limit).

In practice, I think we would take the following players back, assuming they didn't declare for the NFL (Booker) or decide they were done with football or enter the transfer portal: Michael Wilson, Brycen Tremayne, Thomas Booker, Ricky Miezan, Jacob Magnum-Farrar, Kendall Williamson.

That could potentially get us down to 20 scholarship spots if everyone comes back, or 22 if Kelly and Booker go pro.  Our class is currently at 20, would be 21 with Bailey and 22 with Bailey plus a WR.  Bob can probably remind me if LDS missions (either returning from the class of 2020 or going out) will affect that math.

To me the question is not whether a 4th DL will mean we have to sacrifice a wide receiver in the class of 22; the question is whether if everyone wants to come back, and if they do, whether we would tell them sorry, we are full.

RE: Class of 2022 - TrumpCard - 10-27-2021

This looks right to me, with the caveat that you need to add Scotty Edwards (returning from LDS mission) and maybe Pakola. Symonds might be making a case for another year but there are just so many FBs on the roster. There’s also DWP, R Johnson, N Williams, and Fisk who currently start or contribute substantially and seem like they might be eligible for a sixth year.

RE: Class of 2022 - BobK - 10-27-2021

Interesting I did this last night with a well know writer on another site and Boston Card and he agree. With the notation that Brycen may not be able and West may be needed for depth.

We have 21 commits with Edwards back from a mission hope for Pakola and two 2022s.
I know of know other possibilities. Of course always possible to add one not known now and could lose one who’s committed

RE: Class of 2022 - TrumpCard - 10-27-2021

I understand the logic behind inviting West for a fifth year, but I’d rather see Daniels play even though he’ll be a true frosh. Having a known quantity is not always a good thing…

RE: Class of 2022 - BobK - 10-27-2021

We agree Trum. Except rather see Patu as the top backup

RE: Class of 2022 - TrumpCard - 10-27-2021

Since Stanford has been under the 85-player limit for so long, I didn’t realize the NCAA had lifted the limit for 2021. But it sounds like it’s probably coming back next year. That may explain Shaw’s ability to recruit a pretty darn good class despite lackluster results on the field. But it’s going to cause teams to face a roster crunch, and, based on the scholarship count above, Stanford is no exception.

RE: Class of 2022 - BostonCard - 10-27-2021

Yes, the roster limit was lifted for all fall sports in 2021/22 (and I think winter and spring sports in 2019/200), but will be back next year.  In addition, regardless of actual participation, everyone got an extra year of eligibility, so no one used up a year of eligibility playing football in the fall of 2020.

RE: Class of 2022 - Maple Leaf - 10-27-2021

I noticed on TOS that Kamari Ramsey DB who has verbally committed to Stanford recently visited UCLA, does anyone know what his admission status is? And if there is any real traction on UCLA's part.  Last year Stanford lost out to UCLA another commit who was listed as a DB commit by Stanford but opted for UCLA since they would let him play WR.

RE: Class of 2022 - BobK - 10-27-2021

Fall and Winter sports this year 21-22
Spring sports last season 2021
That’s why WBB has 17
