I missed the lead up to our score; given the circumstances, how the hell did it happen? A couple of brobdingnagian plays by the O or a turnover on D?

McGill interception set up first and 10 at around the 15. First play was an 8ish yard bootleg to Yarusek, the second was a straight run up the middle by Jones for the TD. Hard to believe.

Second drop by Wilson.

Yurosek! 49 yard touchdown!

Great stat Fox just showed:
Tanner McKee first seven games, 11 TDs 0 Ints; next 4 games, 3 TDs 7 Ints. Way to coach em up, Andrew Luck Director of Offense, QBs and Receivers.
Okay, add a TD!

No, we are not coming back down 24 in the fourth quarter. But I like seeing the team fight and not give up. There’s no need for that sort of sneering condescension.

Yurosek is a bright spot on offense. Wilson is having a game to forget.

Wilson has been a good receiver till getting hurt this year. If he wants to play nfl, he has to come back.

The DBs were OK back when most teams realized there was no need to even test them. Not too sure why ND didn't just use the 90% run approach. FWIW - The only schools that really insisted on establishing the pass first in the beginning of the season were Oregon and USC, so the DBs were OK back then.
The injuries at all of the skill positions on offense have been tough, but all of that is secondary to the problems with the OL.

Well, I almost nailed the final score.
I predicted 49-10 a few days ago.
Gave us 4 points too few and ND 4 points too many.
Nevertheless, prediction aside, that was another Shaw wipeout.
But BC wins the palm, with a perfect prediction, 45-14. Congrats!!!

Notre Dame was getting 4.6 ypc, which is fine, but compared to what we have given up in the last three games, is a pretty pedestrian running game. On the other hand, they were getting nearly 10 yards per pass attempt. So, a pass first offense made sense.

At this point, I just really feel bad for a bunch of those players, especially the ones who have given so much to this team, who came to Stanford trusting that its team would be competitive. I'm not saying that the players haven't underperformed - they clearly have, all of them - but it just must be so discouraging, and especially with the team's future not looking so bright for those who are returning.

Same feeling I had in 2004 watching guys recruited by Willingham playing Buddy Ball.

And hopefully that is why they will not make the CFP. Any team that could not get 6 or 7 ypc against Stanford is not worthy.
If the favorites win their conference title games the four should be Georgia/Michigan/Cincinnati/OK State.
I don't think Cincy will do well, but it would be great for a Group of 5 to get in.
We've seen the ND inclusion in the CFP turn into an awful semifinal a couple of times now. They would get crushed by Georgia is ND was the #4 seed.
As I type that I realize how depressing it is that a team I think would lose to Georgia 3-35 or so, just beat Stanford 45-14. The 2016 Rose Bowl feels like a very long time ago right now.

Shaw's post-game press conference -
MV72018 - 11-28-2021
At his post-game presser...
1. Shaw took the tack of saying that the problem is the team doesn't know how to finish and had too many drops and poorly thrown balls;
2. He again trotted out his claim that we should have been up 21-0 against Cal. LOL!!!
3. He actually said, 'if you take the top ten plays in each of the last two games, we look like a good team.' LOL!!!
4. He said anyone can take shots at him now, but we'll be a lot better team next year.
5. In very vague terms, he hinted that he may be making some personnel changes.
He said NOTHING about the line on O or D and NOTHING about the D backs (other than praising McGill). If he thinks that with what we have left after the seniors graduate and the next class matriculates that we will have greatly improved O and D lines, well, I'll be very surprised if that were the case.
Overarching viewpoint he expressed again, we're not that much worse than teams with much better records than ours. Do you all buy that, or is he in denial about the depth and breath of the problem? I tend toward believing the latter.
As usual, he got all marshmallow questions from the assembled horde of about 5 writers.

Austroturf - 11-28-2021
A couple of other harrowing data points:
1) The Pac-12 will only have 6 teams in the post-season this year: BYU knocked USC out of contention, while UCLA ended Cal's dreams. So only Utah, ASU and UCLA from the south and Oregon, OSU and WSU from the north will get a bowl bid. Of course, if all the bowls fail to find teams to play, a 5-7 USC or 5-7 Cal might still get a bid. One of them will end up at 5-7 because they play each other next Saturday.
2) As I predicted after Cal disemboweled us last week on our home field, UCLA mauled Cal in the Rose Bowl 42-14. Let that sink in. Cal is 4-7, with losses to powerhouses like Nevada, TCU (fired their coach mid season), WSU, Washington and Arizona, but they managed to reclaim the Axe, in Stanford stadium, by a 30 point margin, then lost by 28 to UCLA.
3) The 55 yards rushing vs. ND drops our season average to 87.3 yards per game. In total, we barely cracked 1000 yards rushing for the entire year. Bryce Love had more than twice that many yards in 2017 (the last year Stanford had a positive rushing differential vs. opponents). Our two top rushers this year (Jones and Peat) did not manage 800 yards together.
Fair to say we were a doormat in a doormat conference. Now let's see what Shaw does to right the ship.

You might also want to subtract a game as Tanner only played in ten games this year, missing Utah and OSU with his injury.

Stanford played hard throughout the game, they need to be given credit for that, but they seem so ill-prepared to play the game. Hope for better days.
