Wait until March.

RE: WBB vs South Carolina Game Thread - cardfan77 - 11-20-2022

Too many unStanford like plays. I guess better to make those mistakes now than in March

Disappointing week for Cardinal sports. Hope MWP and MSoc can salvage it.

RE: WBB vs South Carolina Game Thread - M T - 11-20-2022

An important call that went against us was when we were down 3 and Agnes got a rebound & put it back in & the ref called a foul, but ruled that it was before the shot.  We would have been down 1 with a FT to tie.  Instead we were down 1 after the 2 FT.    BIG difference.  The official didn't make the call until the ball was in Agnes's hands and she was in the process of shooting. If he had called it before the ball was in her possession, then fine. But she was on her way up when he called it.

As you know, Stanford made 2 dumb plays at the end of the OT.  Jones was in front of the bench.  They should have been counting the seconds for her (but she shouldn't need that!).

I hate watching games with homer announcers.

WVB swept AZ Saturday.

An 8 point 4th Q would have won it.

RE: WBB vs South Carolina Game Thread - Phogge - 11-20-2022

Brink is your best player. She has to be on the court. You don't have enough shooters.

RE: WBB vs South Carolina Game Thread - BobK - 11-20-2022

First of all hell of a game. We can certainly voice our opinions on turning points of course not inbounding the ball and Chris Weber wearing a Stanford uniform but we played great and they played great.
Player of the game Ashton Pretchel what a game especially on defense. Plus I love Lepolo

Haley Jones: 1-13 in the second half including a critical missed free throw
Key turnover late.

Her inability to score in the 2nd half was because she has no perimeter game and so she continually drove in and got met with defenders or blocked. I don't see how that translates to WNBA success; I hope she proves me wrong. She didn't have a good game and hasn't had a good start to her senior season. We need our upper class man to step up. Brink did. Jones didn't when it mattered most late in the game.

4th q a major downers, but one serious positive I see here. Lepoloshowed she can play with the best. This team is going to improve more than SC, I think. We have a real shot at it all. But got to overcome these end of game errors. Did Tara alert them to the time out situation? If not, she goofed. And if she did, a sophomore error. Do I recall correctly that Magic Johnson made the same mistake in a final four game?

RE: WBB vs South Carolina Game Thread - cardfan77 - 11-20-2022

With Brink on the bench, the offense became stale. Lepolo was great as PG. Stanford has now a reliable PG. Brink was fantastic. Beating a dead horse but she needs to stay out of foul trouble.

SC did a fantastic job guarding Jump. I wish Stanford had more screen plays for Jump

At least it was fun to turn on the TV and see Maples full again.

I think the offense was bad enough in the fourth quarter that the end result was more or less what any team should expect against an elite team like South Carolina.

OTOH, the rebounding display was incredible. Very proud of the effort shown.

thought it was Webb at MI but yes lots to learn here. Put them away when you can. Help free Hannah Jump w screens?

Chris Weber.

Yes, that's it.

I love Lepolo's fight.  She is excellent at bringing the ball up the court under extreme pressure.  She doesn't force shots.  She doesn't force passes (there were a few wrong decisions but overall extremely good).  Lepolo needs to be on the court as much as possible.  Lepolo has become my favorite player.

I though Haley made some amazing plays in the first half and was effective in double teaming post players.  In the fourth quarter things didn't go so well. Sometimes Haley decides she is going to drive and shoot even if there are three defenders between her and the basket.

An early season loss doesn't bother me at all.  It should motivate the players to get better during the season.

Dawn Staley has Tara's number. She beats the Cardinal by turning on the pressure D (as I posted a few days ago would probably happen when we were casually roasting marshmallows). Predictably, we again wilted in its face. We had a 10-point lead going into Q4. Poof!  We had 22 TOs to SC's 11. Nuff said.

Btw, look at the play that allowed Boston to tie it in regulation. She had the ball in the key with Prechtel on her, then Boston took two steps to her right, and Prechtel was a statue, didn't move her feet at all. Result: Boston had a clear, unobstructed shot from close in to tie it. There is little more fundamental than moving one's feet to stay between the player one is guarding and the basket. Didn't happen. How could she not be double-teamed down low?

I have problems with the play Tara/Paye designed with 2.3 seconds left in regulation. A pass intended for Brink close to the basket? Low likelihood of success, poorly delivered. Why not set screen for Haley to drive to the hoop and make it or get fouled. Btw, Haley had her moments, e.g., the beautiful assist to Brink early, but still shot only 5 for 19. She did not look like an All-American to me. Something looks "off" to me about Haley Jones.

Tough loss, but Brink and Lepolo played very well. Kudos to them.

Stanford's continuing lack of athleticism and intensity -- as well as the timeout blunder -- are on Tara.

Look at that play again , see if Boston doesn't have a hand in Prechtels back.  And brink played well when she was in, can't do much from bench

First game I've watched and will be the last until the Final Four if they get there. I saw some clanking threes in the second half. If, if, if they can find some outside help it will only free up Brink, Betts and the girl with the long braids (Kiki something?). May have had a great %age coming in but not outside against a tenacious team. Like the way that the girls battled under the rim. Looked like they gave 100%. But the Cocks had stronger athletes and were extremely aggressive grabbing second and third chances. Staley is a helluva coach.
