YouTube just recommended this video to me. A Colorado player gets a T after their game against Marquette is over (0:00 on the clock, Colorado way ahead), and the refs award two shots.

To the good, we started the game well, got a nice lead, and I don't believe CO ever got within 10 after we built the nice lead early.  Jump had a very good day on offense and played very good defense on Foremann, whose name I may be butchering.  Haley struggled a bit to finish but rebounded like crazy.  Our defense was generally very good.  The energy was good all game.  Betts got some minutes and did well.  She blocked a shot or two, grabbed rebounds in traffic and ran the floor well.  Missed a couple of shots but overall an encouraging outing for her.  Brink also struggled to finish inside and got pretty beat up trying, but she did block a lot of shots.

Nivar and Harriel were not fantastic but given the opponent's style and how little time they have had at the point, I give them both a thumbs up.  Don't forget that things would have been easier, the ball handling better, if our starting point guard was available.  Lepolo was walking around fine with no boot or anything so I suspect she will be back next weekend.

See my forthcoming article, “The NHL Is Taking Over Women’s College Basketball.”  How long until actual fights break out during games?

Well, we almost had a fight against Colorado last year, Cam vs Hollingshead, who tried to throttle Cam with an arm around her neck, Can responding by throwing the ball at her. Missy, among others, pulled them apart

In early December there was a scrum at a TCU George Washington game where punches were thrown, but nothing really landed.

Yeah, I thought she had 2.  The first was when Vonleh pushed off to get an offensive rebound and Brink fouled her on the subsequent shot.  The second was the charging foul when Cameron tried to go coast-to-coast.

The foul on Vonleh was committed by Nivar, not Brink. The TV crew got it wrong. Those of us at the game were surprised it was on Nivar too. But the contact by Indya was before the contact by Cam.

"Something interesting we learned at the chalk talk, and that Tara repeated in the press conference.  Jones was moved to the 4"

Well, I posted too late and didn't give Tara enough time before the Utah game to take my suggestion that Jones be moved to the 4, but happy that she was able to follow my advice before CU game. :)

Liked your comments alum81. However, you shouldn't fret about Ashten or Kiki. Ashten often misses her first 3 pt attempt. It's hard to come off the bench after sitting long and nail from distance. If we want her threes more, she needs more time on the floor. Her D has been oustanding agst. bulky posts. Kiki will be all right. Frankly I thought from the start of the season, she hasn't looked as sharp as the flashes from last year. My real concern for her is that she needs to play more physical. She's slight so agst some posts it will be a challenge. But she can do so if she puts her mind to it. And with our plethora of posts, she doesn't have to worry about fouling.

Refs who did mens game vs OSU did a fine job - one of the best I've seen with our teams involved this year.

This is CO - they try to get under an opponent's skin with extra pushes, hits, etc.  It has to be coached and it really crosses the line.  Dislike.

The move didn't exactly "unleash" Haley's O: 5 for 16 from the field, 1 for 2 from the line, 11 points. Her recent shooting woes persist (except for 10 of 17 FGAs against Utah). In the last 5 games, she's 27 of 76 from the field (35%, vs. shooting 45% from the field on the season). (In contrast, on D Haley grabbed a remarkable total of 18 rebounds.)

Haley is ESPN's player of the week.

TYVM. You are correct. I foolishly believed what the tv crew said.

(01-22-2023, 02:04 PM)M T Wrote:  I disagree. It may be justified but not obvious.

I recall Missy not calling even a common foul when a Cal player threw the ball into the face of an opponent.

Refs all the time don’t call balls thrown at opponents when the goal is to get an out-of-bounds call.  Brinks throw was about that speed bouncing off Hollinshead’s elbow (oh my!). Hollingshead didn’t just reach up and put her hand over Brink’s mouth and nose and push once, she had two full arm extensions and pushed/followed Brink a number of feet.

There's a difference in throwing a ball at an opponent as part of a basketball move (for example, from an out of bounds position to get the ball back under the basket, or to get possession from an out of bounds) and throwing a ball at an opponent out of frustration.  The whistle had sounded, the play was dead, and Brink threw the ball at Hollingshead in the heat of the moment.  As I said, completely justified, but still a technical.

RE: WBB: Stanford 62 -- Colorado 49 - OCcardinal - 01-23-2023

Some stats I found interesting in the last two games:

Lepolo had a +/1 of -7 against Utah before she was injured in the middle of the 1st quarter.  Nivar finished with a +/- of +21, including a +/- of +9 in the portion of the 1st quarter she played after Lepolo went down. It's interesting that there was an immediate boost when she came on. Could have been a lot of factors other than Nivar playing, but Nivar was a much more highly-touted recruit. That's admittedly too small a sample size, but I'll be curious how that all plays out (both this year and in the future).

Brink played 28 minutes and 29 minutes, respectively, against Utah and Colorado. Both far above her season average of 23.5 minutes (or last year's season average of 21.9 minutes). Her efficiency rating against Utah was a 36, second highest of her Stanford career (the highest being a 42 she had against Arizona in a home game last season).  She had an efficiency rating of only 13 against Colorado. Interestingly, Brink's lowest efficiency rating of this season (a measly 6) was also in a home game against Arizona. (Barnes must have made some nice adjustments to slow her down).

Since Brink fouled out vs Utah (a game where she had a 36 efficiency) but had only 2 fouls and 0 fouls, respectively, in her low efficiency games against Colorado and Arizona, I wondered what the relationship between foul trouble and efficiency has been for her.  It turns out she has had a higher efficiency this season (both total and per minute) in games where she has committed 4 or 5 fouls (though there are only 4 such games)

#Fouls Avg EFF (#Games) Avg Minutes / Eff per min
0 10.5 (2) 19 / 0.57
1 26.6 (5) 26 / 1.03
2 18.0 (4) 23 / 0.77
3 19.0 (6) 22 / 0.83
4 26.0 (2) 23 / 1.13
5 31.5 (2) 26 / 1.24 (other game she fouled out was vs South Carolina in overtime)

RE: WBB: Stanford 62 -- Colorado 49 - BostonCard - 01-23-2023

Meh.  The correlation between number of fouls and efficiency looks like noise to me.  With only 2 games in the highest and lowest foul categories, there could be a very large outlier effect.

RE: WBB: Stanford 62 -- Colorado 49 - BosCard - 01-23-2023

It was an ugly game after the first quarter but I feel better about this ugly game vs USC.  Brink, Jones and Belibi (and Betts) missed a lot of shots close to the basket.  Yes some of them were defended but some of them were just misses. I prefer this strategy, get the ball inside through movement, screens and drives, vs our prior “strategy” of standing around the perimeter and trying to pass into a post who is tripled teamed.

Also as a side note I really like Charli Turner Thorne as an analyst.  She just knows so much about basketball and I trust her opinion like when she says Demetre is a great passer from the perimeter.

I'll chime in on CTT as well. I've been really enjoying her commentary.

Same re CTT. She is excellent. Not same re all the whining about referees on this thread.

RE: WBB: Stanford 62 -- Colorado 49 - M T - 01-23-2023

Shooting 21.4%, 6 for 28 (1 for 6 3pt) in the second half could have done us in.   Colorado shot 25%, 9 for 36.  (Our fewer attempts would be due to their fouls)

My thinking on this is about getting another ballhandler (and outside shooter) on the court to combat the packing in strategy. Haley is so versatile that it really doesn't matter what position she is supposedly assigned. This takes away from 2 bigs approach sI wouldn't think it good to do so for most or all of the game, just enough to force opposing Ds to adjust and have to face a different look.

Too bad that approach doesn't work as well on defense.  How do you suppose she got that many rebounds?  It wasn't by playing tight defense, but thankfully the opponent had a bad open 3-pt shooting day.

There were questions about Colorado's play, especially in the second half.  They play rough.  The question is whether their play is over the line. I have created a three-minute clip from this game with selected offensive possessions by Stanford in the second half.  I've slowed down some clips and included a few freeze-frames.  I'm making this private on Youtube.  PM me with your email address if you're interested.

Best,
Tony

Also, sharing private videos can't be done from the Youtube mobile app.  Trying to access Youtube on mobile from a browser forces you to use the app.  I might be able to work around this by deleting the app, but that seems like a lot of trouble.  That means I'll be a little slow replying because I have to use an actual computer.  Sigh.
