From the boxscore.
Attendance: 7022. Maples seats 7233, so not quite a sellout, but close. So close.
On the other hand, there were two empty seats near me. I had room to put my coat on the next seat.

1. In the game, in the special features about her record, and in her exceptional post-game press conference, Tara made fabulous impressions. She came across as genuine, humble, personal, and gracious. I came away with an extremely favorable impression of the kind of person she is. Recruits across the country who were watching could only be favorably impressed when considering what it would be like playing for her.
2. Kiki was nothing less than magnificent yesterday. The extent of her improvement this year is amazing and she will get even better. She could be an All-American next year. Her athleticism is impressive, as is her increasingly smooth 2-point jump shot and rebounding, on both O and D. She has a great motor and an endearing personality.
3. While it's obvious that Kiki, Lepolo, and, to a lesser extent, Demeter had excellent games, it is sobering that the rest of the team hit zero 3-pointers and scored only a total of 5 points, at home no less.

On the last point, I'd say it was a combination of taking what the defense gives you -- Kiki was so dominant that getting her the ball was usually the best play -- and a very off shooting game by Jump.

Agree on all points. Jump was badly off and this concerns me. But the other position--Bosgana and whoever rotates into that slot--was quiet too. Ideally we want opposing coaches to have to scheme to defend all 5 of the players we put on the court. But Lepolo and Demetre did just enough to complement Iriafen. If someone else had been able to do what they did, the game would not have been in doubt for three quarters, as it was.

Haven't had time to write up impressions, but will say that under Rueck, OSU has almost always been a tough out for us, save for the peak Jones years (which were also their slump years). They are close to our mirror image as anyone in the Pac-12, and Scott scouts better than anyone else (other than us) in the Pac-12. Last night was indicate of how they defend: take away your plan A weapons and disrupt your set pieces. I expected a low scoring grind it out and that's exactly what we got. And just as in most games in the past, we have more talent and eventually the talent breaks through, and Tara is better at second half adjustments. But this was never going to be the game we had 5 scoring in double figures.

An interesting trivia tidbit -- OSU's Raegan Beers (who was pretty much unstoppable yesterday) went to the same high school as.....Christian McCaffrey.
I don't follow prep hoops at all and I was mildly surprised to see she faced off against Lauren Betts pretty often; their schools were 15 miles apart and they also were teammates on a club team. Now that club team must have been something!

In one of the many interviews Tara mentioned Stanford used a play they hadn't practiced, something added in to take advantage of how OSU was guarding Kiki (if I understood what she meant correctly). I wonder if that was a halftime addition or even more impromptu.

Interesting. Kiki was designated Pac-12 player of the week:
https://pac-12.com/videos/stanfords-kiki-iriafen-wins-first-career-pac-12-player-week-award-presented-nextiva
If you watch her highlight reel, on three straight plays you see Lepolo go inside and then kick it back out to Iriafen, who was left undefended by Beers, who remained firmly planted in the paint. Two of those were her awesome three-pointers. I did notice from 2Q on, Lepolo was pushing to get inside, sometimes to score herself, and sometimes to kick it back out to others. It worked well, and I wish we did it more in general, but it was definitely especially effective given that Beers was not following Kiki back out and staying at the post. So I wonder if that's what Tara had in mind?

Could be it. Rueck probably decided to let Iriafen be a jump shooter but to make it very hard for her around the basket. On many of her jump shots, the OSU defenders just watched her shoot, from a distance, like they were instructed to let her. Analytics taken a bit too far, probably.
Then there was that other funny formation in which Lepolo had it out at the top of the key and all four other players were on the baseline. I don't remember what that resulted in, but it was the first time I had seen us do that.

Everybody has focused so intently on Iriafen and how much she's improved since last year. And rightly so.
But I wanna throw some kudos to Lepolo too who I think has improved a lot just since beginning of season.
She has become a much more versatile give-the-team-what-it-needs player.
She has shown she can (at times) knock down the threes, and so should demand opponents to guard her outside.
She can drive and put it up, or drive and dish to a big inside if open, or drive and kick back outside for open long 2 or 3.
She's really upped her assists, and has found lots of ways to get them, and has minimized her turnovers.
Harriel has flashes of brilliance (and mental lapses) but Lepolo has really solidified what the point position needs for this team IMO.

I would hope that's true but the very next day 2024 #10 Mikayla Blakes, who had Stanford as one of her top 6, chose Vanderbilt. I don't know what factors may have played a part (including admissions), but it's a bummer.

This is only a guess on my part, but I would expect all WBB recruits are going to be "concerned" going forward that Tara may retire during their tenure. If that happens, one really doesn't know what to expect from the program going forward. I would be surprised if competing schools do not point this out, "with all due respect" of course. While any coach may leave for any reason at any time, some such departures are more plausible than others. It is IMO undoubtedly a factor in recruits decision process.

This is one of the best clips I have ever seen. I saw it last night and lost my mind over the joy of it all. Thanks for posting. I was going to try to post it but I usually screw it up so I appreciate your post.

By the way, Geno is 9 months younger than Tara and, as I recall, was unable to coach for a short while due to health reasons. I'm not aware of Tara having any health issue impact her coaching.
I'd also point out that other coaches are more likely to move to a different school, or to get fired if they have a bad season. That won't happen to Tara.

I guess I kind of expected that was the case, but every year it becomes more plausible. It can also now be argued that since she now holds the record, there is less reason for her to stay around. Perhaps you have some thoughts on how much traction this argument has with the student athletes. I don't really have any first hand access, but I would imagine it is a problem that is becoming "significant".
