I am going to modify your suggestion a bit. Stanford could take that 50 million a year and use it to house the homeless. That wouldn't advance Stanford's primary goal of educating students one iota but it might help clean up the El Camino. I think that would be much more useful than paying athletes to attend Stanford.

Paywalled. Care to summarize?
Here's a gift link to the SF Chronicle article on Canady:

If we're going to go to the trouble of having a top-flight athletics program, one that attracts eyeballs and attention and applicants, we may as well take that step. At this point, we're just negotiating price.

Thanks for the link. Lots of good information there.
For those of us too cheap and paranoid to give away $0.50 a week and our internet whereabouts, is there anything more than seven figures and 25-oz ribeyes?
Rule of thumb used to be not to move around too much unless there were exigent circumstances or at least a 20 percent raise. Obviously she's getting the latter. But what about the year after next year? Does Texas Tech need to give her $1.4 million so she won't bolt to a better program? If they don't win or at least make the WCWS, is this an epic failure? Glad it's not my money.

There were a couple of things mentioned:
- New coach (5 straight Sun Belt titles and .773 winning %) who is bringing in 8 transfers including the Sun Belt Player of the Year
Quote:Canady had expressed interest in personal branding and social media, so Glasco arranged a meeting to address how Tech could help foster that. They even appealed to the family’s Chiefs fandom, highlighting the school’s recently announced apparel deal with Adidas that features a brand partnership with Red Raiders alum Patrick Mahomes and his signature Adidas gladiator logo. Glasco spared no detail, asking for the landscaping around the facilities to be touched up, the infield lined at Rocky Johnson Field and the scoreboard lit up for the visit.
But NIL appeared to be the major factor. $1,050,024. $1M for Canady, $50K for living expenses, $24 for her jersey number.
The article says that Canady scheduled visits to Tennessee, Alabama, UCLA and Kansas. But it did not say whether or not she took those visits. No school appeared to have had a chance to counter offer Texas Tech. Canady made her commitment 48 hours after visiting Lubbock.
The article does quote Jessica Mendoza.
Quote:“(Lifetime Cardinal was) incredibly competitive with every offer that NiJa was having thrown at her, and that’s saying something,” said Mendoza.

Thanks Spiney.
I seems to me, like it or not, her personal brand is henceforth the "million dollar college softball pitcher".
She better win every game.
She can't live on a million before tax in Lubbock? OK, maybe she'll have a posse hanging out with her down there sucking money away.
It was the 24 bucks that sealed it, wasn't it?

I read Stanford was competitive in bidding for Canady. I don't know what that means in dollar amount. If it was near $1mil, I assume that kind of money is available for Olympic sports. It will be interesting to see what Stanford sport next pulls in a big recruit with the help of NIL the next year or two.
I forget where I read that Lifetime Cardinal offered Canady $350k, which was more than Brink made from them at her peak. Not sure how accurate that is, though, so please take with brobdingnagian mounds of salt.

You’re low JJ Brink has made more than canady will. Most her own NIL

Oh I have no doubt Brink made more overall, but I was referring just to Lifetime Cardinal. :)

While weather preferences, like tastes, can't be argued, in 2023, Lubbock racked up 46 days of 100+ temperature! Impressively oppressive! Chaqun a son gout!
