BTW, the Stanford record for made 3 point baskets is 320. It was set in 2018-19. We played 37 games in that season, so we averaged 8.65 three point baskets per game to set that record. We are now averaging 15 made 3s. I would say that there is a very good chance of breaking that record this season.
The NCAA season record for 3 point percentage is 47.3%, set by Fordham in 1990. The NCAA record for 3 point shots made per game is 12.5, set by Sac St in 2015. We are also on pace to break those records.

That is my hypothesis, anyway. I have (bad) memories of Lindy LaRocque, Hannah Jump, Kianna Williams, Karlie Samuelson--all losing some of their touch down the stretch.
So while I am absolutely delighted by all our long range shooting, we are going to have to do a lot of other things very well too if we want to keep winning. That is one of the reasons I am so happy to have seen all the players who drove to the basket in the last game, with Tess Heal being a revelation.

Another factor that might be result in declining shooting 3 point % over the course of the season is that opponents get more and better scouting information on Stanford and design more effective defenses. It might be in Stanford's favor slightly this season to be playing in a new conference and under a new coach. Conference opponents won't have years and years of scouting and experience a familiar foe to know what to expect.

I like this thinking. At least one plus to going to the ACC, though it's very hard for me to think of any others. Personally, I Stanford and Cal had hung tight with OSU and Wash State and stayed with the Pac-12, which is now being rebuilt. But I know I'm in a minority re this.

- 3 point shots made per game improved after the first 3 games in 6 seasons and worsened in 9 seasons
- The average decrease overall was 0.5 made threes per game.
- There were 4 seasons where we averaged more than ten 3PM through the first 3 games. On average we then dropped 2.7 3PM made for those seasons.
- There were 11 seasons where we averaged fewer than ten 3PM through the 1st 3 games. On average we then increased 0.4 3PM per game for those seasons.
- We've averaged 15 made threes per game so far (at a 57.7% rate). The closest season to that was our 2018-19 season in which we averaged 12.3 made threes (at a 38% rate) per game through the first 3 games. The made 3s per game did drop quite a bit (down to 8.9 for the season). But Kianna Williams, Alanna Smith and Lexie Hull all shot 3s at 36%+ for the season. (Lacie Hull and Dijonai Carrington were both at 33%.) And that ended up being our best 3pt shooting season in the last 15 years. We made the Elite 8 that season. 2nd best, by a hair, was 2020-21 when we won the national championship.
The stats will undoubtedly go down substantially. The NCAA record for 3pm per game is 12.5 and for 3p% is 47.3% (both in years when the 3pt line was a lot closer) and we've got a lot of tough competition ahead. But I'd argue there is more than the impact of summer practices going on here. There are a lot of good 3pt shooters on the roster right now and Paye's offense this season is well-built to take advantage of that. We'll see how it plays out from here.

I will add that it is much easier to scheme a defense to stop 3pt baskets when only 1 or 2 players are a threat beyond the arc. Last season we saw that with Jump being blanketed. However, this season we will consistently have 4-5 players on the court that can shoot the 3. It will be very difficult to deny us a good look at the 3 if we run the Princeton, keep the ball moving, and are patient.

I'm guessing they threw a lot of money at her and/or she doesn't want to live in Utah anymore.

Just a hunch, but I'll bet one of her first calls was to Tara and was a thank you for all the input that helped her turn around a 5-16 Utah team and regain her coaching stride a few years ago.

Talk about a wipeout! We'd probably lose to JuJu and USC even if Iriafen was still at Stanford.

Challenging stretch upcoming for a young team. Stanford plays 6 games between now and January 8. Only 1 at Maples (UT San Antonio). Road trips to Baton Rouge, Berkeley, Dallas and Clemson along with a neutral site game in San Francisco.
