1. Listen to anything anybody recommends with EUTM if you've never heard of it
2. Check Metacritic on Friday (new release day) and listen to any album that rates 80+, anything 70+ if it's an artist you at least like a song or two
3. Listen to the top charting songs in your favorite genre. In my case it's Alternative which covers a lot of ground and is really whatever is cutting edge or innovative across many genres.
It does help to have a two hour round trip daily commute to work.
I tried, I really tried. I agree with Publius' sentiment here, but I just couldn't do it at last Saturday's wedding.
The couple and their friends are in their early 30s. I don't know this music at all. Apparently the deal is to encourage a mosh pit with everyone screaming the lyrics and putting their forefinger and index fingers in the air toward each other. Nothing slow. Almost nothing I recognized. The DJ mashed everything together and everything had a disco beat and the acoustics were horrible, but I metaphorically aged at least ten years into a curmudgeon standing there in my suit. They played a remix of Ain't No Mountain High Enough and a pretty close version of the Eurythmics, but that was all I knew. The rest of it was...good enough to find a quiet space with my wife and watch Alabama-Georgia. After the wedding we finished off the House of Guinness on Netflix (good modern Irish punk) and I found a documentary on Led Zeppelin, which includes footage of their first real gig, which is straight out of Spinal Tap's air force base concert. We also watched Sinners, which my wife loved for the vampires and music and I loved for the music. And a surprisingly good narrative despite vampires, which I usually stay away from as much as anything with zombies in it.
My tradition is to find local record shops and buy some vinyl. Sorry Publius, I am a lost cause. I bought a collector's 50th anniversary picture disc of the Dead's Blues for Allah, a special edition Little Feat's Don't Fail Me Now, a Mofi master of Santana's Caravanserai (because the only copy I ever had was on cassette) and some Levon Helm because Arkansas.
That said, I dutifully check out all the current recs here, so I hope there is hope.
At my daughter's wedding celebration (in Ensenada 3 yrs ago) I got to dance with her to "My Girl," which I used to sing to her as I held her to stop her crying when she was an infant (it always worked!). But then the DJ gave way to a mariachi band, and the real fun began.
Having played in a rock/soul band in the early 70's I have to admit that the disco/emo/grunge age was a real yawner for me -- too robotic/simplistic rhythmically. Since then, not much on the airwaves has made my playlist with the exception of MJ, Prince, and Jon Batiste.

So the crazy thing about age is aging. MJ's Thriller was released 43 years ago as was Prince's 1999. Danced to those my freshman year in college. Mostly up in Buckhead. For reasons. When doing what we wanted to do, we'd hit the Agora, 688 Club, Fabulous Fox for the best artists on occasion, or the closet down the hall to throw on some Rush. My younger sister says there are only two kinds of people. Those who like Rush and those who like Van Halen. She's old now too.
Hey, Jon Batiste is only a few years older than my daughter and current by any definition of the word. I like his stuff too.

Sounds like a fun wedding for Jacket3ree and family! UVa stadium is sort of like the old Stanford stadium - mostly a large lower bowl with (aluminum) bench seats all around.

Thought about putting this in the trivia thread, but this is
music trivia.
Max Martin, who is credited as producer on Taylor Swift’s newest album “Life of a Showgirl” is credited with writing or co-writing 27 Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles, starting with Brittney Spears’ “… Baby One More Time”. However, this is only good for second all-time.
Who owns the record for writing/co-writing the most Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 singles?

Don't blame yourself. Somebody should hang that DJ. The key to music at a wedding is cross-generational appeal. Play the oldies that the kids love and the new songs that the older ears will find appealing. I gave our wedding DJ a pre-approved long list of songs with his discreiton in terms of which ones to play and when. He got my grandmother dancing.
In terms of becoming current, start with whatever genre you love and listen to the newer artists working that idiom and broaden from there.

We got that advice from our band back in 1987...play the oldies so the old folks would dance. My 89-year-old great grandfather danced to Glen Miller's "In the Mood" at our wedding, as did all the senior citizens. It was a great time.
My son got married three weeks ago, he followed the same strategy: lots of '60s/'70s/'80s for us old folks, then later on, his generation's music. Great times.

If anybody wants to throw out a favorite artist, I can suggest a more contemporary one that you should check out. For example any Frank Sinatra or Roy Orbison fans should give Stephen Sanchez a listen.

Thanks Publius! I will check out Mr. Sanchez because I am a fan of both Sinatra and Orbison.
Here are my most recent six vinyl purchases (yesterday). I always buy in sixes for no reason.
Al Green
I'm Still in Love with You
Gil Scott-Herron/Brian Jackson
Winter in America
Gillian Welch
The Harrow & The Harvest (contemporary)
Van Morrison
Astral Weeks
Ramsey Lewis Trio
Another Voyage
Hermanos Gutierrez
Hijos Del Sol (contemporary)
Looking forward to a playlist or a contemporary artist that will drop both years and pounds off me!

My recommendation for Al Green fans: Sonny Cleveland
Gil Scott Heron: You Want It Darker by Leonard Cohen
Gilian Welsh: Kacey Musgraves
Van Morrison: Jonah Kagen (like Noah Kahan but more than two good songs)
Ramsey Lewis Trio: Never heard of them (jazz is one of my bigger gaps). Will check them/him out! I do like jazz piano
Hermanos Gutierrez: Love them! Sounds like you are more current than you let on. I've gotten into EZ Band (norteno band that covers alt/pop hits)

Sonny Cleveland is a revelation. Spot on Publius!!
I have plenty of Leonard Cohen from way back. I had never put that together with GSH. I do have Golden Hour and Deeper Well, so I know I can trust your time machine here. I also have many of the Alison Krauss/Union Station/Robert Plant variants. Yep, initially hooked by going to see O Brother, Where Art Thou?
Here's a Ramsey Lewis sampler for you. You might already be part of the in crowd without knowing that was Ramsey Lewis.
The In Crowd
Dobie Gray Version (with Lyrics)

Me too! I love "In Crowd" particularly Bryan Ferry's version. Didn't know there was a cool instrumental version out there.
RE: Music Thread 2025 -
jacket3ree - 10-09-2025
I never knew Bryan Ferry did a version. That's what I love about these discussions. I have lots of vinyl and CDs still (the old 8 tracks and cassettes must be living forever in landfills across the country) but will stream digitally and feed that into the vintage stereo. I will often fixate on a track and listen to dozens of versions all in a row. I think I was doing Can't Find My Way home one night for so long (Tidal has at least 300 versions) that eventually Mrs. Jacketree came back not to tell me to turn it down (the usual request) but to ask if I could at least play another goddamned song. "These are all different songs because artists do different things." So, I switched to headphones. Led to the discovery of Marie Taziki.
Incidentally, Billy Page composed The In Crowd originally for Dobie Gray in 1964. The Ramsey Lewis Trio's version was an instrumental hit a year later.

By the way, if you like piano jazz, I would point to the Japanese pianist Hiromi. Here she is playing Oscar Peterson.
(Edit, had to laugh that autocorrect changed her name to Hirohito; she’s good but that doesn’t make her the sun goddess)

This one is Hulk bait... Faouzia is Moroccan/Canadian singer with an impressive voice. Here she is singing a riff based on Bethoven's Für Elise.
https://youtu.be/2Kw8g6PjnvA?si=Se0PkIxP4bsJrkdb
I put there with Raye (see her performance at the Royal Albert Hall, especially belting it out for, I counted it, 17 seconds at the 3:30 mark)

And Loufey

Interestingly, as I mentioned Faouzia is Moroccan/Canadian, Raye is Ghanian/Swiss/British, and Loufey is Icelandic/Chinese.
