My thinking was that, if the coach feels that an NCAA bid has been achieved, why risk further injury in a match that doesn't really matter (i.e. Stanford is not going to be a top 16 seed and host)? But I agree that it would be worse to forfeit points.
Too bad Connie Ma is out of eligibility ;-)

You can't sit Ekstrand because the rest of your lineup has to play up a spot and are more likely to lose.

Ekstrand showing some decent form today. Myoung sat out the doubles - and is battling in singles, but just dropped her first set.
If you're Stanford, you have to like your chances right now. Driscoll, Wang, and Ekstrand all won their first sets. Ahn is tied up at 5-5 in the first. Sun retired after losing the first set 6-1.
Virginia 2-0 at the moment.

Stanford tied for 7th in the ACC (with a 7-5 conference record) and is 12-9 overall. Their most recent ITA rank was 33. Does Stanford really need a win over an 8 seed (or even a 1 seed) in order to get a bid? Is something making it more difficult this year to qualify?
Stanford last week was ranked 47. This week 33. I have no idea why the team moved up 14 places after beating Cal and losing to SMU. Who's to say that the team won't drop back into the 40s if they lose to SMU? Should Stanford remain in the 30s, they should make the tournament. Fall into the 40s and it's dicey.
Here is Stanford's ranking history over the last month.
March 17 - 33
March 24 - 40 (after defeating Syracuse and Boston College)
March 31 - 36 (after losing to Notre Dame and defeating Louisville)
April 7 - 47 (after defeating Virginia Tech and losing to Virginia)
April 14 - 33 (after defeating Cal and losing to SMU)
The ITA rankings just came out. Stanford is ranked 29th, highest since March 3rd. The team would seem to be in great shape for an NCAA bid, unless the committee is concerned about Stanford's injuries.

The NCAA posted the info on the selection show here.
Basic details:
* Selection show livestreamed on ncaa.com on Monday, April 27 at 1:30 PT.
* 64 teams selected, of which 34 are at-large
* First-round matches are May 1 or 2
Stanford's most recent match was Friday, April 17, so the players will have two full weeks of rest/preparation before a first-round match.
I have no idea how the bracket is put together, but, should Stanford be selected, it would be nice to stay in the West. Teams west of the Rockies that are ranked in the top 16:
#11 Pepperdine
#12 University of Satan's Children
#15 Arizona State
Schools outside of the top 16, but ranked higher than Stanford, who would also like to play first-round matches west of the Rockies:
#19 UCLA
#22 Cal
#23 Washington
#26 Arizona

NCAA bracket announced earlier today. Stanford is travelling to Malibu this weekend. They face BYU in a 1st round match with the winner likely playing host and 11th overall seed Pepperdine. The Waves smoked Stanford in early March 4-1.

I am guessing that 1st round matches will be Friday, then 2nd round on Saturday since BYU does not play on Sundays.

Stanford won 4-3 @ UCSB on Feb. 14 and, as noted earlier, lost 1-4 vs Pepperdine on Mar. 8.

Stanford defeated BYU 4-2 today to advance to tomorrow's round of 32, presumably against host Pepperdine.
The Cardinal (as has been custom lately) lost the doubles point and lost at #6 singles. But they swept the top of the lineup at 1, 2 and 3 singles in straight sets. Then Caroline Driscoll (dropped to #4 singles) got a key service break and closed out her match.

Looks like Stanford was skunked by Pepperdine, 4-0. Bummer.
Things looked promising when Valerie Glozman won the ITA singles championship in the fall. But injuries to VG and others derailed the season.
I think we lose Caroline Driscoll and Emma Sun to eligibility but am hoping the others will be back and healthy (!) for at least one more year at Stanford.

Stanford played 8 matches this season against teams seeded in the top 16 in the NCAA tournament. The collective score in those 8 matches was 6-35. They were 0-8 in doubles. 6-27 in the singles matches that were completed. This team was pretty far from being a top 16 team. Winning a round in the NCAAs was as far as they were going to go.
The future is murky. Will Glozman return? Will the 3 freshmen return? Will Alexis Blokhina return and will she be healthy? She is enrolled at Stanford and planned to play on the team this spring until she was derailed by an injury (I think it was an ACL). Hope springs eternal, but I am concerned that the better teams in women's college tennis have accelerated away from Stanford and I am not sure if they can catch up.

This group of current frosh constituted the #1 recruiting class for last fall. For fall 2026, we have two blue-chip recruits:
Katerina Shabashkevich and Kaia Giribalan. I agree that we need to see who will come back among those who are eligible, and I have no idea if the transfer portal is in play, for good or bad.
As for this season, without Glozman and Blokhina it was bound to be a tough spring. With them I would think we're a top 10 team?
