Banks, Schmidt, McCovey, Ott, Rice, Yastrzemski, Greenberg, Bonds, not on the list.  

Penultimate hint: one Giant, one Cub, one Cardinal, two Phillies, one A, three Tigers, and one Giant/Cardinal/Yankee split remain. 

LAST MAJOR HINT: for two seasons, all three remaining Tigers played together. they were 21, 29 and 36 years old.

- Ted Williams, Babe Ruth and Stan Musial have done it 12 times

Williams, Banks, Schmidt, McCovey, Ott, Rice, Yastrzemski, Greenberg, Bonds, not on the list.  

Sam Thompson is probably the best player you've never heard of.  He played for the Detroit Wolverines from 1885 to 1889, then the Philadelphia Phillies from 1890 to 1898. He also played one year as a fifth outfielder when he was 46 years old, on the 1906 Detroit Tigers -- Cobb's rookie season.  Thompson's career line is .331/.384/.505/.889. He was an RBI machine. His career RBI-to-games played ratio is the highest in MLB history. He was a right fielder with a cannon for an arm, he participated in 61 double plays (16th all time for outfielders) and had 283 assists (still 12th all time for outfielders). He had some good speed...he was the first player with 20 HRs and 20 SBs in a season. He hit a home run in his first plate appearance off of Hall of Famer Tim Keefe.  He was a carpenter in Indiana and didn't play pro baseball until he was 24.

A St. Ignatius SF grad who began his adult life as a dentist later became a wealthy real estate tycoon and had a plan to build a sports palace at Candlestick Point. He instead built it somewhere else. He also co-owned a team in the Pacific Coast League.

Who was he and who portrayed him in a very successful sports movie?

Nope. He built a palace of a racetrack in Arcadia, Santa Anita (try their world's best hot egg sandwich sometime). He co-owned the Seals with Charlie Graham. Best friend of Charles Howard (Seabiscuit owner).

Charles Strub. They have an early year stakes named after him.

I would put a big asterisks on both Gleason and Ward. All of Ward's pitching occurred when overhand and sidearm pitching was not allowed.  In fact, that's why they're called "pitchers", because during the first 10 years of MLB, they "pitched" the ball underhand, like pitching horseshoes.  Until 1884, there was nothing very unique about pitchers in the field. Ward STOPPED pitching when they changed the rule.

Gleason was a bit like Lefty O'Doul.  He started as a full time legitimate pitcher from age 21 through age 27, then arm injuries stopped him in his tracks. He transitioned to full-time batter at the age of 28, did all right.  .261 career hitter. But I wouldn't say he was a fielder who sometimes pitched.

Here's a trivia question for you: of the 841 position players who have pitched, how many have a career 0.00 ERA?  

And secondly, which position player has pitched the most innings with a 0.00 career ERA? Hint: he's a Hall of Famer.

228 of the 841 position players have 0.00 career ERAs.

Honus is the correct answer, having pitched 8 1/3 total innings over two appearances with zero earned runs.  Interestingly, he gave up seven unearned runs across those two appearances.

Ted Williams had a 4.50 ERA in his single, two-inning appearance.

Campanella, 5.28 ERA in his games.  Both were starts, and he went a combined 15 1/3rd innings and gave up 9 earned runs...but struck out 16.

Musial was actually signed as a pitcher out of high school. He'd struck out 13 adult batters in 6 innings as a 15 year old on a semipro team. In 1952, at the age of 31, he got into a game as a pitcher and threw at least one pitch, but did not give up a hit, walk or out...wiser heads prevailed and must have taken him off the mound.

Foxx pitched mainly in the last year of WWII when he was 37 years old.  He pitched in 10 games, started twice, finished the game eight times, had a 1.52 career ERA and a 1-0 record. Interestingly, he pitched 23 2/3 innings and only gave up 13 hits...but gave up 14 walks. Struck out 11, one intentional walk, hit one batter. 

Few of the Giants' stars or Hall of Famer position players ever pitched.  Mays, McCovey, Cepeda, Hart, Aurilia, Kent, neither Clark, neither Bonds, Posey, Crawford, Belt, Travis Jackson, haller, hiller, dietz, speier, thomson, thompson, irvin,  kept to the field. Buck Ewing, George Kelly, George Davis, Ward and Bresnahan were Giant HoF'ers who pitched in the 19th century. Technically speaking, Jesse Burkett was a terrible pitcher for the Giants in his rookie year, then went on to a HoF career as an outfielder for Cleveland and St. Louis.
