Watching Utah vs Gonzaga, having a really tough time with this one. A case of I want both to win, Utah so the Pac-12 can be 6 for 6 into the sweet sixteen (4 for 4 as I write this, and USC is looking like a likely win to make it 5 for 5), Gonzaga just because. . .

Utah so the whole day isn't 100% chalk? But it doesn't look good for them so far.

They were within striking distance 61-67 with 5 minutes left,
but Gonzaga answered back with a 7-0 run to make it 74-61 with less than 2 minutes
remaining.
Nonetheless, the PAC 12 has 5 teams in the Sweet 16, with:
#1 USC vs #5 Baylor (Prediction: USC)
#2 Stanford vs #3 NC State (EVEN)
#2 UCLA vs #3 LSU (EVEN)
#3 Oregon State vs #2 Notre Dame (Prediction: Oregon State)
#5 Colorado vs #1 Iowa (Prediction: Iowa)

Three of the four teams we lost to in the regular season are in the Sweet 16 (CO, USC, Gonzaga). Plus, there are four teams in the Sweet 16 that we have already defeated (UCLA, ORST, Duke, and Indiana). Did I miss any?

So, reading this morning why Utah seemed so flat yesterday. Lynne Roberts says incidents clearly affected how the team played.

Utah lost to Gonzaga in the game last night, but their experience in Spokane was bad for more than that alone. They were originally staying in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, 30 miles away, because of not enough hotel rooms in Spokane. That in itself is hard to swallow, that rooms couldn't be found for them in town, but what happened in Coeur d'Alene was totally unacceptable, and I have to wonder how much it might have affected their play. The team experienced threatening racial harassment and slurs. The NCAA should have been aware of the possibility, and it should respond in some serious way, though I don't know what. At any rate, here's the ESPN article about what happened:

Re the lack of available rooms in Spokane, I can't understand. We've been to several regionals there, including at least one when there was another major high school tournament going on in town, and were always able to find a room in the city. The 1st and 2nd rounds of the tournament involved 4 teams and their fans, many of the latter locals from Gonzaga who wouldn't need a hotel. Regionals have involved 4 teams and fans, usually all from out of town. What was the difference this year? Doesn't make sense to me, but perhaps there was indeed a legitimate reason. Still, putting a team 30 mines away from the games, witht the home team not having to experience that, that's major extra homecourt advantage.

There was a big youth sports thing I think basketball going on. No rooms. It happens. So ncaa and Gonzaga said move we will help. This in Idaho next door

This is not representative of North Idaho, but there is a small minority. I grew up close to Couer d'Alene and have been back regularly since. A few bad apples causing problems. Very unfortunate. Also, Spokane is a great city for the support it gives basketball at all levels. Riverfront park is located in the city center and the Spokane Falls are spectacular.

Totally agree re Spokane, on all counts. Love going there. But northern Idaho has become another matter, bad apples there attracting more bad apples. The people in Spokane should be outraged over what happened. Hope they expressed that to Utah.

There are a lot more than a few bad/racist apples in Northwest Idaho. It’s well known that there are a number of Aryan racist/hate groups that are embedded in the area.

Like Durty Nelly, I am also from Idaho. My niece and grand niece live in Couer d'Alene. Many--most--of the locals there are horrified not only by this incident but the many other racist incidents over the years that have occurred in their community. The Aryan Brotherhood (a neo-Nazi group) moved to the vicinity in the 1980s and were forced out by locals bringing lawsuits. But even with their departure, the notoriety of their former presence has inspired other hate groups to travel to northern Idaho since. For example 31 white nationalists brandishing guns at a pride event in Couer d'Alene were arrested just two years ago.
Here is an article about Idaho's fight to get these groups out. Once a region gets a reputation for being a haven for extremists, it becomes a generational battle to undo that reputation.

On the "why was the Utah team lodged in Couer d'Alene" question I can add this: Couer d'Alene is a beautiful tourist town with some hotels right on the lake. It might be seen as a particularly nice place to stay if Spokane was truly full with a convention or somesuch.

81 has it mostly correct. The issue is that the Aryan Brotherhood never totally left and has been joined by many others over the years. I chose not to move to Spokane (a wonderful city I have visited on many occasions) for work in the late 1990s due to the known White Nationalist groups in Sand Point, ID. It's too bad because Northern Idaho is a wonderful place for camping, hiking, and rafting.

FWIW, the current discussion is very on topic to "WBB: the NCAA tournament" - especially on a Tuesday when tournament games are held Friday-Monday.
All that said, appreciate how everyone's handled this challenging topic. Hopefully by Friday we'll have more uplifting things to talk about - a demolishing of NC State, for example. =)

Oregon State knocks off Notre Dame 70-65.
ND forced something like 25 turnovers, but somehow OSU overcame it. Better shooting and rebounding were a big part.
