Stanford gives up a PK from Harvey for a high boot with 10 seconds left.
Kal finishes on the rebound. Stanford loses 3:2. I think that was Harrison’s player who was wiiiide open on the rebound, but it is hard to tell on tv. Somebody certainly spaced out there. Disappointing end to a disappointing regular season.
Tournament seeding will be interesting.
RPI will likely be at the 3 to 4 line.
Ranking will probably be in the 20ish range so around the 5/6 line.
With the injuries this about a 10 line team.
My guess says they will be a 5/6 seed. We wil see.

Kal was very aggressive about occupying the closest spot to the goal on the PKs. We had time to occupy it ourselves during the video review of the final penalty kick call, but we didn't. Haley blocked the PK but the failure to get the best position to go for the rebound ended up costing us the game.

I quick relooked. Bloom is in the box a step before the PK. Ref misses it, so that is 2 goals the ref had a. Hand in. But Stanford just watched as well. You have 4 Kal players closest to the ball on the rebound. That can’t happen. Craig can’t push the ball in front of the goal like that either. Not a good day for her.

Agree that the Stanford players were all too passive. Seems like they didn't expect Craig to make the save so didn't rush in like they should have. I don't blame Craig for not parrying the ball to the side. I feel like the likelihood of a save is so low that if the GK can block the initial kick, it's on teammates to clear the rebound. She definitely wants the first Cal goal back though.

I didn't see Kal's possible encroachment in real time at the game, but watching a video second by second, it is not clear to me that the Kal player's foot was down in the box before the ball was kicked; if it was, it was by a few tenths of a second. But what is clear is that the ref was watching the kicker and not that line, so he clearly was not able to make that call if it was a violation.
I too do not fault Craig for deflecting the ball back across the goal. She had dived across the goal in the right direction but the kick, which was not well aimed, went to her waist and she had to move her hands back down to block it, and was unable to grab it. I think she did well to deflect it across the goal and not back toward the kicker. The fault for the goal, IMO, was our failure to claim the high ground and get there first. Even if the player who scored the goal had instead gotten a late start, the kicker would have beaten our first defender to the ball and scored. We failed to cover.

A couple of rules/mechanics clarifications.
1. This is the NCAA rule on encroachment - it’s I believe straight FIFA language.
14.3.2.4. “If a member of the attacking team enters the penalty area….” Note that “enter” isn’t defined. Some leagues like the EPL have clarified this to mean a body part in the penalty area, but I do not believe the NCAA has ever published a clarification. So you don’t need a body part down to get called as the NCAA rules are currently defined.
2. Head official’s job is to make sure the initial line up is correct, and is then responsible for watching the PK taker and the goalie. AR’s are responsible for if the goal crosses the line and encroachment. So the mechanics were correct, and I am using “referee” imprecisely for the entire crew.
So for me, Kal was far enough in, and it was the encroaching player who scored the goal; so whether or not a foot was down for me that is no goal. I do agree it’s not clear though if a foot was down early.
Regardless Stanford needs to cover better. I am also more bleeped off by the second goal where Boamah got knocked down, and it directly led to a Kal goal

Stanford, #3 seed. Winner of UCSB game plays winner of #6 Rutgers and UConn.

In the same bracket, unseeded Cal opens against #7 Pepperdine.
Remaining bracket seeds are #1 Mississippi State, #2 Arkansas, #4 Notre Dame, #5 Kentucky, #8 Utah State.
Santa Clara is unseeded and opens against #7 BYU. If they get past BYU, they have the joy of #2 North Carolina. #1 in their bracket is Florida State. No other west-of-the-Rockies teams in that bracket.
USC is #1 in their bracket and opens against Sac State.
Cal Baptist opens against #2 UCLA in the last bracket.

UCSB only won 2 conference regular season games and got into the tournament by making the conference tourney championship game and winning on PKs. Assuming we win that, we'll likely play #6 seed Rutgers in Fayetteville. Against common opponents: we both beat NC State 2-0 (us away, Rutgers at home); Rutgers tied Wake Forest at home, we lost to WF 1-0 away; and we beat U$C at home 1-0 while Rutgers tied U$C 1-1 at Big 10 tourney neutral site in semifinal (advanced to championship game on PKs, where UCLA beat them 5-0). Certainly a competitive but winnable game for us. If we win that, we get 2-seed Arkansas in the regional semifinal.

A higher seed than I expected, and slightly above Stanford’s RPI of 13. I thought they would fall to the 4/5 line.
On the one hand, I have no read on the SEC teams; so I have no idea if Miss St and Arkansas ate legit. On the other hand, injuries have greatly diminished the team. I expect they should at least win the first game, but winning 2 maybe 3 games is probably their best case this year.

These teams always make me laugh a bit. 7 forwards, 2 mids and 2 defenders on the Frosh team. The first team apparently lines up as 3-2-5. I guess it’s 1905.
Not a great year for Stanford, but that still seems a bit sparse. At least Kohler should have been all Frosh.

The game was sold out, and lacking a ticket, I settled for listening in to parts of the game on KZSU. The student announcers gave up on play by play and went into irreverent mode in the late second half. E.g., "Forget about scoring a goal, UCSB is just trying to maintain its dignity at this point."

A decade or so ago, you could watch the game from the parking lot end. When they did put the blinders up, they made sure that it was very difficult to get a view of the game from there any more. At the time, I figured that thoroughness reflected an attempt to sell more tickets.

Very easy win 5-0 win and it should have been worse. On the one hand UCSB offered nothing with the ball - minimal possession and 0 shots on goal. Really the only danger was the ball bouncing around a bit in the Stanford box once each half. But on the other the women have struggled to beat mediocre teams 1:0 on a regular basis this year; so the offense was a welcome sight.
That said in the remaining games, Stanford won’t be able to keep the opposition bottled up like yesterday for the entire game. UCSB could barely cross midfield. The defense will get tested next game.
Next opponent TBD today. Rutgers or UConn.

UConn wins 2-1.
I wasn’t that impressed with either team, but Rutgers was down their best player due to red card suspension. There is no chance though that a team of Rutgers ability makes the ACC tourney finals. Both teams though were better then UCSB.
- they lined up 352 and Rutgers struggled with the bodies in midfield from their 433. It will be key for Stanford to not get pushed back into a 451. Keep Boamah pushed forward into the MF as much as possible as well.
- UConn presses a lot and gets many of their goals off turnovers, including their first in this game. Brandt needs to be clean at CB.
- Okafor is most of the offense- 13 goals this year. She is fast, but she was pretty solid on hold up play as well. The second forward is big and sloooow.
- Johnson covered a lot of ground in midfield.
- The second UConn goal was a bloopy header on a corner. UConn isn’t that big; so I don’t expect them to be much of a threat on set pieces despite this goal.
- The back 3 looked shaky.
I forgot to mention, we had a Williams sighting last game. I don’t think she has played since the Wake or NCST games. Glad to see her back. She was rusty, but her speed is a dimension no other front 6 player has on the team.

Not to look too far ahead, but the winner of UConn v. Stanford faces the winner of Cal vs. #2 seeded Arkansas. In the first round, Cal beat #7 Pepperdine, 2-1.
Separately, unseeded Santa Clara defeated #7 BYU in the first round. They get to face #2 seed North Carolina, an 8-0 winner over USC Upstate. #2 UCLA defeated Cal Baptist 2-1 to play #7 Va Tech.

Madness how top heavy the conference breakdown is after R1.
Big10: 9-1, I assume USC wins easily as they are up 3 already.
ACC: 9-0. I guess the ACC had 10 in 2011.
So 18 of the 32 are from 2 conferences. Kind of ridiculous.
And I think 7 more from the SEC (7-3). I lose track a little who is where these days.
Of course 6 tournament teams overall are ex-PAC. 3 Big10, 2 ACC and 1 Big12.
