So far…

Saban and Swinney

Four to go.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 08-16-2022

Whittingham, MAC Brown, Ferentz, The Pirate.

Dang, if my math is correct, Shaw is one short (29-23 against AP top-25 teams).

Beat you to Ferentz and Brown Skip. Good call on Grundy, been there forever.

Last guy? Gary Patterson?

Kelly, can’t think of his first name... not the asshole from Notre Dame. Now at UCLA.

And I like that, even though it was wrong, we both guessed "the Pirate" knowing that it's obvious to everyone who we meant.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 08-16-2022

Not Grace nor King nor Gene. Some Kelly.

Chip.  My previous guess of Kelly was the asshole from Notre Dame. I guess, unlike "the Pirate", I wasn't clear enough on that one.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BostonCard - 08-16-2022

Mac Brown, Kirk Firentz, Nick Saban, and Dabo Swinny have already been answered.

Brian Kelly?
Kirby Smart (probably not a long enough tenure)?
Mike Gundy?

BC

Patterson retired from TCU last season (but he almost certainly had 30+ wins against top-25 teams, probably at least 10 were against overrated Texas teams).

Chip Kelly coached Oregon for four seasons and UCLA for four.  Chipster’s career record is 64-32, so it would be surprising if almost half his wins came against top-25 teams, especially in the PAC-12.

The arsehole in Notre Dame (Brian Kelly) who is now the a-hole at LSU was 92-39 at Notre Dame, but vacated the 2012 and 2013 seasons, so I don’t know if those count. He also was 34-6 at Cincinnati, and I’m sure at least a couple were against ranked teams.  So… maybe?

Brian Kelly and Gundy from OK. St.

Ferentz
Saban
Swinney
Brown
B. Kelly
Gundy

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 08-16-2022

David Shaw has 14 wins over top 25. However his record is 14-4 the best % of all active coaches
So says a bleacher report story

Check the date of that article (if it’s the one I think; we may have run the same google search).  As I recall it was published in 2014.

Can’t find it but a july 2015 story confirms I saw a very old story
Good news by answer of Shaw was so close to correct

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Giants - 08-17-2022

This week’s PGA Tour event is being played in Delaware.  It is the first time that state has hosted a PGA tournament.  There are now nine states in which a PGA tournament has not been played.  Which one’s are they?

Note: Korn Ferry Tour (and predecessor tours) and Champions Tour events are excluded from consideration.

7 out of 9.  Nebraska and Idaho hosted tournaments in 1933 and 1992 respectively.
