Greg Johnson, Chair of the Giants BoD, said there is a commitment to be aggressive this off-season.
Specifically he was quoted as follows, “Ultimately, as we said before, we don’t have a fixed number (for payroll) yet. It’s what we think we need to do to put a competitive team on the field. As you know, we have a lot of flexibility coming into this off-season and we’re well aware of the (free agent) shortstops and the person who can hit in the Bronx that is out there. Farhan ultimately will come up with his suggested number. We haven’t done that yet, but we’re certainly looking at that right now and are well aware that we’ve got some gaps that need to be addressed.”
Yeah, I know talk is cheap. All of us want action. However, Johnson is now on the record as having stated that the Giants will be players this off-season.
Is it too early to roll out the red carpet and welcome Judge and Correa? ;)
Lastly, the Board consists of a half dozen members. It appears that Posey will be in a position to exercise some real influence….
I’m happy to help Zaidi come up with “the number”. $225,000,000. There. Easy.
Be interesting to see how Busters role evolves. Although we may not know much of what is truly his role.

Harrison started, Pitched three innings and struck out nine. However he gave up two runs and got the L.

$233M is the CBT level next year. I suggest a budget of $232,999,999.

One thing I’d like to see in Harrison’s development is LESS strikeouts. I know, that completely goes against conventional wisdom. But being able to get outs with less pitches - inducing soft contact - is a wonderful skill for a starting pitcher. Get deeper into games. It also involves improving command. Which right now is his one issue. Pretty common one for a young pitcher, particularly a lefty. The ability to get strikeouts is important. Gets one out of jams. But there simply are too many one trick ponies out there.
More throwers than pitchers. Two pitch guys with 95 plus and a hard slider. Throw in a change up maybe. When your job is reduced to getting through a lineup twice - it’s all about power pitching. Balls to the wall from the first pitch. Stats like FIP carry brobdingnagian weight.
Smoltz talked about how when he was a starter he’d get through the order the first time without showing everything. In other words - he didn’t come out blazing away. He built to it. Saved it for when needed.
I’d love to how Juan (or Maddox) would handle hitters today. Juan - Fastball, slider, curve, change up and a screwball. Thrown over the top, 3-4’s or sidearm. 15 pitches to an extent. With impeccable control. Maddox, sinker (with tremendous movement) slider change up and he could throw each into a thimble - usually about 2-3 inches off the outside corner at the knees. Until a guy leaned to much then he busted him inside. PITCHERS. Not throwers. Maddox once threw a 77 pitch shutout. About 4 innings work for todays “pitchers”.
I don’t know what Juan’s fastball topped out at. My guess is he could get it up to 92-93 or so on occasion. Figure he hovered around 90. Mixing pitches, hitting corners, changing speeds, changing deliveries with, of course, that straight over the top high leg kick as his main delivery. Something he developed, by the way, in the minor leagues. When he was signed he was a sidearmer. A minor league manager asked if he ever thought about throwing over the top to improve his ability to get lefties out. He developed the famous kick. And he learned a screwball.
An artist. A true pitcher. I loved to watch him.

Sounds like the Giants' brass knows the off-season objective to sign Trea Turner.
I'm encouraged.

The Dodgers Jim Brewer used the screwball to kill the Giants in relief. Heavy right hand hitting order...Mays, Hart, Cepeda, Davenport. It would come up looking like a balloon and drift away to soft contact and outs.
Spahn threw hard when he was young (first MLB win at 25) and lasted long enough to become the all time leader in lefty wins. By mid career he was a control pitcher with a devastating screwball.
Nobody throws it anymore but Spahn, Marichal, Brewer and others lasted for years.
I agree with Lex. It was more fun watching Maddux toy with hitters for nine innings than to watch Rodon blow them away for five. But we are in the minority.

Not to mention Carl Hubbell. Whose left elbow supposedly pointed in the wrong direction after his career ended. Screwball had to be pretty tough on the elbow. Last pitcher I remember using it extensively was Fernando Valenzuela.

Giants have won four in a row, tied for the longest winning streak in the majors with the Yankees and Guardians.
Still blows my mind that the Giants are the second worst fielding team in the majors, and true to form, they've given up the second highest number of unearned runs in MLB with 82. Yankees and Cardinals have only given up 33. How did that happen? If the Giants had given up 49 fewer runs, how many more wins would they have had? The SFG ERA is #10, but WHIP is #19, total runs allowed per game is 4.31 with the MLB average at 4.29, so...not
too bad.
Giants have scored 4.37 runs per game, the league average is 4.29, so...again, pretty average. The Giants are an average team, one season after winning 107 games. Giants are league average in HRs and doubles, much less in triples and stolen bases. Giants are 97 in OPS+, less than average and had the fourth most strikeouts in MLB. Ugh.

The bad defense - not just in terms of unearned runs allowed, but earned runs that would have been prevented by better defensive players - is the sort of under the radar reason for their regression to mediocrity that people who just pay attention to scores and record wouldn't appreciate.
The power outage and bullpen regression are other reasons, but the defense is to me the biggest factor.

I read that this was the single greatest reason for Tyler Rogers' decline...here's his advanced statistics. The objective stats; e.g., batting average against, flyball percentage, exit velocity, etc., are all only slightly worse this year than last, but his results are much, much worse.

The biggest difference in Rogers season is hitters are not chasing as much. His walks are up. Rogers is valuable cause he’s versatile and durable. He throws a lot of innings out of the pen. I suspect he will be back.

Crawford has made a bunch of tremendous defensive plays last several games. He’s healthy. Makes a big difference. And I don’t care what the metrics say, he’s still a superb defensive shortstop. Lost a little bit of range. But he still has great hands, incredible foot work, is perhaps the best infielder I’ve ever seen chasing down pop-ups and has that spectacular arm. What a joy he is to watch.
One of the great Bay Area sports stories. Sometimes dreams do come true.

Tough call. There may never be another year where SS's are plentiful in free agency. And Luciano is still green.
Casey Schmidt goes 4/8 in his first at bats at Sacto. And supposed to be a generational defensive player.
The Giants need to be aggressive.

Absolutely. If possible, sign a premier SS. Along with Schmitt, the left side of the IF would be set for the long term.
The #1 goal this off season has to be finding guys who can play every day v. both right and left handed pitchers. IMO, of the nine players in the lineup, a minimum of six should be non-platoon guys.
DH - platoon
1 or 2 OF - platoon
All others - every day guys.

Agree across the board. No bigger Crawford fan, but the SS in FA are in their prime and will provide 5-7 years. Trea Turner is unlikely. But he’s my choice. So dynamic offensively. Although not a great defensive SS. He has played second. So, perhaps he slides over for a year. Estrada becomes Super Utility. Unfortunately if not resigned by Dodgers he supposedly wants to go East.
