The scoop on the Giants 40 man roster…

Currently, there are 10 players on the 60 day IL. Therefore, the 40 man is really a “50 man”.

Given that, the Giants need to drop 10 players by the day after the WS ends.

First, they have six players who are pending free agents (incl. Rodon, who will opt out):

Peterson
Belt
Miller
Alexander
Alvarez
Rodon

plus one player under team option (Longoria). I think SF will decline their option, thus kicking any decision regarding his 2023 status down the road.

That means a net of three players will need to be dropped before adding any players who are not currently on the 40 man who would qualify for Rule 5 if not placed on the 40 man. Among the minor leaguer prospects, I have no idea how many players (or who) fit that description. Let’s say five for the sake of this exercise.

That leaves us with eight players who need to be cut from the current 40 (50 in reality) roster.

Next, I reviewed the 14 arbitration-eligible players.

Cotton and Dean are a couple names that stand out.

Six to go….

LaStella - goodbye and best wishes…

The last five come from the 23 pre-arb players:

Proctor
Walton (a favorite of Phogge)
Welker
Vosler
Jones

Lastly, it is most likely that SF will cut back to 37-38. This would give them some wiggle room if they see a player who was not offered arbitration by another club and to create roster space going into the team’s Rule 5 draft.

Therefore, here are three names on the cut list, if SF goes below 40:

Johnson
Gonzalez
Wynns

Note: Excluding Rodon, Longoria and LaStella, SF has five players under contract for next season (DeSclafina, Cobb, Wood, Crawford and Flores).

Yeah, Wynns was my last cut. If SF goes to 38 (which is more likely, quite frankly, than 37), he makes the cut.

Similar players. The edge Wade has is that he can play 1B; whereas, Gonzalez’s only position other than OF is pitcher :), Depending on what happens with Belt, that could be enough to go Wade over Gonzalez.

Flexibility aside, given how banged up he was most of the season, if he can get back to good health, I believe Wade can still be a contributor in a platoon with Slater. (Yes, I used the “p word”. I hope I don’t get banned).

As you correctly noted in an earlier post, nothing wrong w it’s a couple positions. platooning. One OF and DH certainly. I think Gonzalez is a better athlete than Wade. With a slightly higher upside.

Lex... Gonzalez has no idea how to properly go back on a ball hit over his head. Wade's advantage is that he can play first. Gonzalez probably a .270 hitter, Wade maybe .240.

I don't like either one. Maybe Estrada can be everyday LF and sign two guys who are better than Slater and Yaz. "We'll spend" is a nice phrase but they have to deliver on it. Farhan says he wants guys who can play everyday. Now prove it.

Sure. Perhaps the new GM helps. Wade was a two month wonder. I don’t think he will return to that. He has increased his launch angle and the results were not pretty. He has little speed. In not strong defensively. The bat doesn’t play enough to make up for the rest. Gonzalez makes better contact. And he has speed. Something the Giants sorely lack. He’s raw. But I think he has more upside. Frankly, my hope is they bring in a couple regular OFs through trade and/or FA. Or maybe Estrada moves to left when they sign a big time SS and Craw moves to second…

Yaz and Slater platoon in right. Two regulars man center and left. No frigging platoon. (Nimmo would be a nice add). If either Gonzalez or Wade are anything besides a 5th OF, not good…..

A free agent regular in LF (Benintendi?)

Add either Wade or Gonzalez as a fifth OF and the Giants are good to go.

Yes, I would love Judge to sign with SF but I don’t think the Yanks will let him get away.

90 wins is certainly enough to make the playoffs in this era. And as the Phillies are demonstrating - just sneak into the playoffs and who knows how far you can go…

Can’t dump everyone. Slater hits lefties very well and can run. Yaz is an above average defensive RF with some power. He and Slater can make an effective platoon. But if they don’t have two everyday OFs it won’t work. One thing - Yaz has been the closest thing they have had to an everyday OF for a couple years now. That must change.
