Lee wins 16 with a par. They are all square.

Meanwhile on 18 Valenzuela drove into a bunker then hit a fine shot to reach the green. From 50 feet, she nearly holed the birdie putt. But her opponent hit a fantastic approach to 6 feet and made it to win the match. Duke leads 1-0.

Looks like UA pulled it out 3-2. They will get the winner of our match in the semifinals.

Actually, Arizona, with Moore again providing the clinching match.

Meanwhile, a coinflip to decide who's away on the first extra hole for Wang results in Duke's player striking first and sinking the 5 footer. But Wang also rolls hers in.

Onto the 20th.

For Arizona, Haley Moore, the hero who made the winning putt in the NC match last year, rolled in a birdie on 18 to beat USC.

Wake Forest gets a hole in 1 on the 17th hole to tie her match vs. Arkansas.

Liu jacked a 3 footer to 3 putt the 18th. Duke wins and leads 2-0.

Wang and Carta halve 19. They'll go to the 20th.

Krauter and her opponent halved 16. Krauter remains 1 up. Stanford has to win every remaining match.

That had to hurt.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-21-2019

Krauter birdied 17 to win 2 and 1. Stanford on the board.

On 18, Lee and Boonchant are both on the green in 2. Lee has the slightly shorter putt, uphill about 20 feet.

Lee burns the edge of the cup with her birdie. She and Boonchant halve the hole with pars and will go to extra holes.

On the 20th Carta and Wang both had birdie putts. Wang just missed from 15 feet and settled for par. Carta ran her birdie putt 5 feet past, stepped back from the putt once, then knocked it in. On to the 21st.

It all comes down to our sacrificial lamb.

On the 19th Lee with a 5 foot birdie to win. She made it!

On the 21st Wang with a 10 foot birdie to win and Stanford to advance. It went all the way around the hole and stayed out. They go to the 22nd hole.

These have been fantastic matches. USC-Arizona went to the 18th hole of the final match. Wake Forest-Arkansas is 2-2 and all square going to the 17th hole. And of course Stanford-Duke is in extra holes.

Wow, that couldn't have been closer. Almost ended it there.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - winflop - 05-21-2019

Wang just threw a dart at the 22nd hole. Almost went in the hazard but only about 10 feet for birdie.

Carta hit it long and it's in the penalty area but will have a clean chip shot.

Win or lose, Wang has taken one of the top college golfers in the country to the 4th extra hole. Gotta be great for her future. Too bad Valenzuela lost her match.

Yes, the player whose score never counted during stroke play whose opponent is a senior and NCAA individual champ in 2016. Wang is showing some guts.

Wang drove in the fairway but had a slightly blocked approach to the green. She drew the ball around the trees, on the fringe about 15 feet away. Carta drove in the fairway bunker. She caught her bunker shot too clean and overshot the green. It is in a penalty area just off the green, but she will have a shot because the ball did not roll down into the creek.

Wang's putt was longer than it looked initially. The announcers said 30 feet. It stopped 1 inch short.

Carta had 3 feet to extend the match. She made it. On to the 23rd.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Viking_Guy - 05-21-2019

Carta got saved by the hazard marker - her ball from the bunker checked up after glancing off of the yellow and red posts and settled into a playable lie.

Well, Wang had her chances to win on the last two holes, but just missed. So close.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - mbdude - 05-21-2019

They were great putts  so close

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-21-2019

Wang and Carta both in the fairway on the par 5 5th with ~120 yard approaches. Wang playing first hit it 15 feet just left of the hole. Carta about the same distance past the hole.

If the playoff continues much longer, they may run out of daylight.

Wang not close on her birdie putt. Short and right. Both players 2 putt. On to the 24th.

The 6th hole is playing about 265 today. A driveable par 4.

Wang played first with driver. Hit it hole high to the left in a big swale. But she will have room on the green to work with for her pitch. Carta played conservatively. Hit a hybrid into the fairway and will have maybe 75 yards to the hole.

In other action, Arizona, as mentioned before, beat USC 3-2 (the final match decided on the final hole).  (5) Wake Forest beat host Arkansas 3-2.  Texas is leading Auburn 2-1, with two matches all-square (one through 17 holes, and one through 19 holes).

And of course, Wang and Carta are going to their sixth extra hole of the day.

Carta birdies, Wang does not. Duke wins.

Texas just blew the match. Auburn stuns UT.

What a great run by Wang and the Card in this match. All in all, this has been a pretty special
5 year run for Stanford WGolf, despite coming up just short today.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - BostonCard - 05-21-2019

Tough ending for Wang, but she deserves tons of credit for coming back from three holes back with three to play to force a tie and then almost took the match.  Talk about gutsy!  No shame in that loss.  Tough loss, but the ladies can hold their head up high.

RE: NCAA Championship - women's golf - Spiny_Norman - 05-21-2019

The entire team really deserves a lot of credit. This match was the highlight of the year for them. Their best play in a spring season where they never really put it together after the end of February. It all came down to some tiny errors (untimely 3 putts by Liu and Valenzuela) and a bit of luck (Carta's ball staying out of a hazard when it bounced off a boundary stake). Wang almost had a storybook finish. I hope that Lee and Valenzuela will want to come back and try one more time to win it all.

But golf season is not over yet! The men start on Friday.
