I was going to illustrate the futility of the "slow climb" -- remember when we were 6-12? Then we won 7 of 10 to climb to 13-15 BUT remained 6 GB the whole time. But then I got distracted and now I see we lost another 4 in a row. Sheesh.
Both Brisbee and Baggarly in the Athletic are not exactly amused. Pretty tough when the hometown press is turning sour on you.
It would help if Devers and Adames starting earning their paychecks but that's not the only problem.
And just think -- we're a whole month away from the June Swoon! ;-)

I think Brisbee and Baggs are wondering what the heck is going on. Alex Pavlovic had a brilliant article that pointed out the good, the bad and the ugly in the preseason:
https://sports.yahoo.com/articles/10-numbers-perfectly-tell-story-122059857.html
The Good
- The relief pitching has the 2nd best bullpen ERA (3.19) in MLB. Their strikeout rate is 8.94 per nine innings, 13th in MLB, and better than the last four seasons in which they were ranked between 24thand 27th. Caleb Kilian (0.64 ERA), Keaton Winn (2.84 ERA), Stanford's Erik Miller has had 17 strikeouts in 11 1/3 innings...might be time to have him close.
- Casey Schmitt leads the Giants in homers, OPS and wRC+ (148), elite territory for an infielder.
- Arraez' defense. He ranks 4th in MLB in OAA, 3rd in MLB in Fielding Run Value and 15th in Defensive Runs Saved
The Bad
- Eldridge has five HRs and a .922 OPS in Sacto, but there's no place to put him. Yet.
- 8 steals, dead last in MLB.
- Arraez is hitting .305, but with few walks and no power, his wRC+ is 97.
- Giants hitters have only won 43% of their plate challenges, 22nd in the league; and 44% of pitching challenges, 29th in MLB. Bailey is 12 for 25, ranking 16th among 17 catchers with at least 20 challenges.
- Logan Webb, 4.30 ERA (but a 3.45 FIP)
The Ugly
- The Giant batters' walk rate (5.8%) is the worst in their history and the worst in MLB. 144 MLB hitters have double digit walks, the only Giant is Matt Chapman. They are the only MLB team under 7% walk rate.
- The Giants have just 19 HRs, last in MLB. Adames, Chapman and Devers have just six this year after combining for 86 last year. Adames is a legendarily slow starter, Devers is slow-ish (and had a very slow start last year), but Chapman's bad month is typically September. Adames is 2 for 38 over nine games
- Bailey has a .411 OPS.

Swept by Rays today and winless on their East Coast swing.
Tough to be a Giants fan right now... I guess it's only May 3 but dang I'm not sure what it will take to wake this squad up.
Things I thought about while watching the Rays series:
** The Giants are dead last in the National League in Runs Scored with 105 (the Braves lead the league at 194).
** Their big hitters have no pop making a two run lead insurmountable.
** I'm filing a missing persons report for the "good" Logan Webb since he hasn't shown up this year.
** Please, please don't tell me how "clutch" Patrick Bailey is at the plate or how his defensive prowess erases his poor offense. The Giants need to park his 152 average and 5 RBIs on the bench until he remembers how to use a bat.

And to make it more embarrassing, your Sacramento A's are in first place in the AL West, with the third best record in the AL. . . ..

I am off the Bailey bandwagon. Now that Rodriguez has been promoted, it might be time to send Bailey to Sacramento. He is totally lost and needs to figure things out without the pressure of the daily big league grind.
Now that Eldridge is up, I’m guessing he will be the DH with Schmitt moving around to allow guys like Chapman and Adames to take a day or more off. They need to step back and assess why they are playing so poorly.
I can’t remember a team that was so talented on paper performing so badly on the field. What a mess….

No doubt. This year’s Mets team as well. However, I was thinking in terms of the Giants.

Patrick Bailey to the Guardians for this year's 29th pick and pitching prospect Matt Wilkinson

Great transaction for the Giants for three reasons:
1. They get a Matt "Tugboat" Wilkinson (Tugboat" because he's 6'1", 270 pounds), 23-year-old, left-handed starting pitcher, and their system is light on starters. He has a 1.91 ERA in six starts, 28 1/3rd IP, 36 strikeouts, 0.918 WHIP at Akron. Has given up one HR in 107 batters. 0.00 ERA in 2 2/3 IP representing Canada in the WBC.
Who is Tugboat Wilkinson? Giants trade for stout left-handed pitching prospect - Yahoo Sports
Bailey is currently batting .146. For purposes of comparison, here are the top four staff batting averages for the SF Giants
pitching staffs:
Season Pitchers’ H/AB AVG
1966 80 / 428 . 187
1958 74 / 407 .182
1962 79 / 445 .178
1993 66 / 378 .175
2. #29 overall pick. For the years 2010-2020, 9 reached the majors, 7 had positive WAR. Best case was SF Giant Joe Panik.
3. They get an additional $3.27 million in slot value, bringing their total to $17.35 million, 4th highest in MLB.

I wish Bailey well. Hopefully the move will unlock whatever has been holding him back the last few years.

Giants win in a walkoff. Unbelievably sloppy play. They could have won two innings earlier as the new catcher swung at a sweeper more than a foot outside. Ramos jogged slowly home with the winning run on a short flare to right field...if the Pirate right fielder had rifled the throw home, it could have been a disaster.
Those aren't the only examples. This team doesn't play like winners. Sloppy, sloppy play.

I tonight Ramos went back to tag. Of course with an extremely poor third base coach that happens

It wasn’t long ago we were saying the same about Joey Bart.

Ironic, that.
SF is playing the Joey Bart and the Pirates on the week they let his replacement go and Joey has a four hit night

Jung Hoo Lee had to run back to second base because he missed it. Sloppy.

in the Arizona rookie league, the Giants beat the Dodgers 29–2 in a seven inning
game.
The stars of the game were Giants prospects:- Luis Hernandez
- 5-for-5
- 3 doubles
- 1 home run
- 9 RBIs
- Josuar Gonzalez
- Combined with Hernandez to go 8-for-8
- Part of 13 combined RBIs
- 9 combined runs scored
Together, Hernandez and Gonzalez produced one of the most absurd combined stat lines you’ll ever see in a rookie league game:- 8-for-8
- 4 doubles
- 1 homer
- 13 RBIs
- 9 runs scored
- 4 walks
- 1 stolen base
The game was shortened to seven innings because Arizona Complex League games often use scheduled seven-inning formats, especially in certain developmental or doubleheader contexts.

Oooof, I'm a Devers fan, but Kyle Harrison is 4-0 with a 0.96 ERA in his last 5 starts for Milwaukee, striking out 41 in 28 innings. Boston traded him and two others for a guy we've never heard of who is hitting around the Mendoza line. Have no idea how often he plays.
