As of right now we have Nunu (graduating) and then Stevenson, Peterson and (presumably) Amborn. The later 3 strike me as somewhat similar to Tess Heal in that they have talent but never really developed under Coach Paye.  I could see how the grass could look greener at another program.  If Ogden and the three frosh 5 stars leave then we are at DEFCON 1.

Now I'm starting to understand why they cancelled the banquet.
The cancelled banquet was the most obvious indication that multiple players were going to transfer. Looks like we're at 4 at this point, and like others I'm hoping that's all. One thing that sticks out to me - given their performance, injury history, playing time, etc... MAS, Amborn, Peterson won't be commanding much NIL money, if any at all. IMO, they don't fall into the "Stanford can't compete in this age of NIL" category. They are still choosing to transfer, and unfortunately leave their Stanford degree on the table.

RE: WBB news - fullmetal - 04-03-2026

Entering the transfer portal doesn't mean that they're a lock to leave, but it's certain not a great sign.  I wonder what the odds are of these players coming back.

It certainly seems that the banquet cancellation allowed the team to avoid awkward/frank conversations with attendees about transferring and the motivations behind that.

I saw a report that as of April 1st there were 76 players in the transfer portal that are 6-3 or taller:

6-3: 45
6-4: 16
6-5: 8
6-6: 4
6-7: 2
6-9: 1

Being 6-2 or 6-3 alone wouldn't seem to be enough to command a lot of attention in the portal.  Conversely, with all these vacancies, there will also be a lot of schools who need bigs.

Separately, I'm really curious about this supposed executive order on athletics Trump is about to sign.  It would limit players to one transfer or they would have to sit out a year.  I wonder if it would apply immediately and could possibly impact MAS' decision.  https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/news/donald-trump-president-executive-order-college-sports-transfers-eligibility-nil/

Saw "Haley Jones to Portland" and for a moment thought she was the fourth.

RE: WBB news - petersalas - 04-03-2026

I remain hopeful that they withdrawal their names and that no one else enters theirs.

I don't think any are coming back. I'm not surprised at Nunu or Mary Ashley...Nunu is really a wing or maybe a small 4, in the pros,  yet she had to play the post almost all the time. She can now go to a higher level team and play for a Final Four. Mary Ashley wasn't getting a lot of time here and I can see why she would want to leave. I think she would get more playing time in a different league. I'm not sure how much PT Carly would get next year...she was clearly not ready for the speed of the league at the beginning of the year.

The ACC is a guard league, with quick and fast guards - a problem for us all year.

I disagree. I like Nunus game and I like what I know about her as a person. She has earned our respect. But Ogden was the best player on our team for the last half.Nunu s injuries, being forced to play out of position where she is simply too small to play the five and her inability to hit shots in the clutch contrast remarkably with Ogden  who grew and grew and grew. I will miss NuNu and wish her well . But Ogden is our best player .

I agree.  Really liked Agara but she struggled as the primary option in big games.  She was too small to score against good defenders with size in the post and opponents wanted / dared her to shoot from outside which she did at a 19% rate.  I’d like to see Eschmeyer in the post where she has the size to shoot over defenders and I think she’s a better 3 point shooter who hopefully will draw out the defense to give Swain some driving lanes.  I was hopeful that the Somfai, Eschmeyer and Agara lineup
would work but Agara at the perimeter just meant her defender would camp out in the lane and muck things up for anyone in the post or driving.

RE: WBB news - BostonCard - 04-03-2026

For the year, Agara had the highest PORPAGATU! (Points Over Replacement Per Adjusted Game, at that Usage) both offensively (5.1 ppg, and defensively 4.0 ppg):

https://barttorvik.com/ncaaw/team.php?team=Stanford&year=2026

Ogden was second in both categories, but about 1 ppg less efficient than Agara.  It was a big step down from Agara to Somfai (3.0/3.6), especially offensively, and an even bigger step down to Eschmeyer (1.7/20).  Not coincidentally, our mid-season swoon coincided with her (and Leopoldo's) injury.  Her rating after injury did drop a bit, but she was still a great player for us.  By the end of the year, both Ogden and Agara had pretty similar moving average offensive ratings (about 110) and offensive box plus minus (8.2 vs. 8.0).

https://barttorvik.com/ncaaw/playerstat.php?year=2026&p=Nunu%20Agara&t=Stanford

She will be missed. The other players were not critical contributors, but as much as MAS was maligned here, she provided much needed depth.  Especially with Agara gone, that really leaves Eschmeyer and Somfai as our only post players with any experience.  And while Amborn played almost nothing, she was our best pure shooter, so if she had been willing to work on the deficiencies that kept her off the court, there would have been a role for her.  Hannah Jump redshirted her freshman year and saw her usage and role become increasingly important.  We will see what the portal brings, but I hate everything about this.

Third me. Ogden was by far our best shot creator. When she's on she can hoop it anywhere on the court against basically anyone one on one.

Nunu would make an excellent small forward but we relied on her to be our primary post option and it never optimized her skill set. I genuinely do wish her well because I think on another team where she's not the 5 she could really play herself into being a first round W pick.

RE: WBB news - Hieronymus - 04-03-2026

I am not going to chose - Ogden and Agara were clearly the top 2 this year. Either one could be shut down by the right type of defender - quick and tall enough to hang around defensively. But they were the 2 best offensive players this year by far.

My big concern for next year is depth. It was a big problem this year - Clardy especially wore out after Lepolo got hurt, but it was an issue everywhere. 7 players isn’t viable for a season (and it’s really only 6 right now for next year). And most of the players who maybe could have stepped into more minutes next year are leaving. It leaves me very concerned for next season.

I think they have to bring in a couple of transfers somehow; at a minimum they need 8 usable players going into the season.

I'm not ready to panic over losing an injury-prone nunu, a mid MAS, and a deer in the headlights, Amborn.  I'd prefer to have them, but if they are the only losses, it's not a big deal.  It is, however, only 4/3, so a mass exodus could still be on the horizon.  If so, it might be the kick in the tail Stanford needs to: 1) get rich alumni like Sundar Pichai, Google CEO, Stanford Graduate, and 2026 Commencement Speaker, to donate $5 Billion to Stanford athletics and BUY THE TALENT, 2) Start RAIDING THE PORTAL.  Hell, if we get enough donations from rich alumni, we can also hire Geno Auriemma.

RE: WBB news - Spiny_Norman - 04-03-2026

As of now, if there are no more defectors (a big "if"), Stanford only has 11 players on the roster for next year including the frosh.

Guards/Wings - Clardy, Ogden, Ijiwoye, Swain, Ngenda, Wheeler
Forwards/Posts - Somfai, Eschmeyer, Ezike, Umeh, Green

Going to need a lot of help from the portal, help that Stanford really has not realized in the new era. In each of the last 4 years Stanford has transferred out much more talent than it has brought in.

2023-24 Out - Emma-Nnopu, Nivar, Betts In - none
2024-25 Out - Iriafen In - Heal, Stevenson
2025-26 Out - Heal In - none
2026-27 Out - Agara, Peterson, Stevenson In - ??

Exactly.  Stanford WBB and the Stanford Administration have continued to ignore the realities of portal recruiting to such an outrageous extent that a major crisis may be needed to finally prompt change. The president should authorize the athletic department to bring in undergraduate and graduate transfers whenever college basketball allows, and the academic timing restrictions imposed by Stanford academics must be removed.

RE: WBB news - farmerguy - 04-03-2026

I've been on the CardBoard forever but never registered. More of a lurker. But I can't stay quiet on this one.

Not sure how much of this is public yet but I'm hearing from people close to the program that the exodus is way bigger than just Nunu. Like, WAY bigger. Multiple starters and key players looking to bounce.

And it's not about NIL or playing time. It's the coaching. That's the common thread.

I've loved this program my whole life. Grew up going to games at Maples. But something is very wrong right now and if the AD doesn't step in fast, there may not be a team left to root for.

Has anyone else heard anything?

What the hell is going on over there? March on Maples needed!?!

RE: WBB news - fullmetal - 04-03-2026

It feels like you're right, farmerguy.  I reread MAS's transfer announcement, and unlike the usual "I will be entering the transfer portal," she flat out states "I will not resturn to Stanford to play basketball next season."  Door shut, bridges/ships burned, last one out turn out the lights.

Having said that, I believe in the institution...and if the coaches are part of the problem, then they need to shape up or go.  The portal era means you have to recruit the team every year.  You have to reward contributors, and you have to coach players to play the game the rest of the nation is playing.  For better or worse, the era of the coach-as-deity program model is slipping away.

RE: WBB news - spike5882 - 04-04-2026

Well, one potential good thing on Instagram today.  Lara Somfai just posted sponsorship/partnership with Hotel Citrine in Palo Alto.  Hard to imagine she'd sign a new deal and then announce leaving shortly after.  No insider info, just nothing she announced the partnership, but I take that as good news about her staying for next year (at least, I am hoping!!)
