They didn't just lean on refs. Argentina needed to beat Peru by four goals in the last group stage game to advance to the final, otherwise Brazil (by virtue of better goal difference) would have played the Netherlands for the title. The government released $50 mm in frozen Peruvian assets and shipped 35,000 tons of grain to Peru prior to the match. Final score: 6-0. Argentina then beat the Netherlands 3 -1 for their first World Cup championship.

Argentina's dictator (accompanied by Henry Kissinger) even paid a visit to the Peruvian locker room just prior to kickoff and read them a letter from Peru's president, just to make sure they understood their job.

IIRC, on top of all that the Peruvian goalie was born in Argentina and was a naturalized Peruvian. Some questions regarding his allegiance were brought up at the time.

i guess we must have watched two different games.

RE: Happy World Cup - BostonCard - 07-08-2026

There are three separate issues here.

1) Was there a “clear and obvious error” (ie, was it clearly a foul by the Egyptian player) [probably, IMHO, but debatable]
2) Is it within the remit of VAR to review a potential foul on the other side of the field. [Yes, under current guidelines]

Quote:For decisions/incidents relating to goals, penalty/no penalty and red cards for denying an obvious goal-scoring opportunity (DOGSO), it may be necessary to review the attacking phase of play which led directly to the decision/incident; this may include how the attacking team gained possession of the ball in open play

https://www.theifab.com/laws/latest/video-assistant-referee-var-protocol/#procedures

It is clear that reviewing whether Egypt gained possession of the ball that led to a goal through a foul is clearly within the guidelines for use of VAR.

3) Should that be the case?  That is something that is fair to discuss.  Here’s an article in the WSJ (gifted) that use of VAR should be reigned in: https://www.wsj.com/sports/soccer/var-replay-world-cup-egypt-argentina-e39a5f5e?st=eagZY8&reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink

He also alludes to the earlier disallowed goal in the Croatia match.  I am sympathetic to that argument.  It does disrupt the flow.  It can give the illusion of false precision (ie the rendered visualizations of a player crossing the offsides “plane”, and the technology has gotten so good that it’s now more focused on enforcing the letter of the rule rather than its spirit.  However, I would say that in the case of a goal they are rare and high stakes enough that it may be appropriate to see whether the possession was gained legally (and, in any case, the goal, ensuing celebration, and restart from the centerline stop the flow of the game anyways, so a VAR review in those cases doesn’t actually bite into the flow).  So, the best argument winds up being that an otherwise beautiful goal (Egypt, Croatia) sometimes winds up being called back after the fact.  I kind of agree, but not that strongly, since I think once you give the refs discretion on whether, say, a deflection was “significant”, there’s going to be all sorts of accusations that “significant” is not being applied evenly across teams.

Almost no matter what, there’s is not going to be a way to satisfy everyone.

RE: Happy World Cup - BostonCard - 07-11-2026

Good use of the VAR in the England - Norway match; an initial call of a penalty was overruled when it turned out the English attacker put his leg in front of the defender.  After a very quick review, the penalty was overturned; correctly IMHO.

Earlier a Norwegian goal was disallowed after Haaland gained position by pushing his defender down.

Both initial calls correctly (IMHO) reversed by VAR.

RE: Happy World Cup - fullmetal - 07-11-2026

I do think VAR has been a serious upgrade for the integrity of the game, on balance.  There seem to be a few issues with following VAR protocols and procedures (e.g. Balogun's red as a result of slow motion/stills being incorrectly presented?), but hopefully feedback and appropriate corrections within the system can shore up trust/integrity.

I don't know if Haaland's shove was necessary or if it affected the outcome of that corner, but...it's on video, and you can't do that.  The subsequent goal that was disallowed doesn't change the nature of the shove.  Same thing with Egypt's disallowed goal vs. Argentina.  Alas, the capricious nature of sports.

RE: Happy World Cup - dabigv13 - 07-11-2026

Norway will feel hard done by. The Haaland foul was very soft to me. In closing minutes refs made an incorrect call on a Norway offsides, gave England a goal kick that should have been a Norway corner, and whistled play dead when the England GK Pickford collided with another England player and went to the ground when Norway had possession and there was no head injury.

RE: Happy World Cup - BostonCard - 07-11-2026

Another good use of VAR.  Swiss player dove drawing a yellow card on the Argentine defender. Ipon VAR review, the yellow was reversed and the Swiss player was given a yellow card for “simulation”.  Since it was his second yellow, he resulted in a red and expulsion.  Hoping that the specter of a VAR review might reduce the diving.

It was a weak foul but it let Haaland shed his marker and gave him a big advantage.  Obvious call.

Agree with your other complaints. The goalie clearly collided which his own man.

First time the top four seeds by FiFA ranking are in the semifinal.

RE: Happy World Cup - dabigv13 - 07-11-2026

This Argentina team is not as good as 2022, but they got some huevos. A lot of people on social media keep whining about rigging but if anyone is rigging these games it's the Sociedad Argentina de Cardiologia.

England - Argentina in the semis, what a matchup, even if Spain-France is probably the "true final".

Another cause for the Norwegians to be upset.  Immediately preceding the second English goal, the ball’s trajectory appears to have been altered by one of the wires holding up the “spider cam”:

The sensor in the ball was apparently not triggered, but it sure does look like something affected the goal kick.

Welp .... All my team's were wiped out over the last two weeks so I have no dog left in the hunt.  Who are y'all backing now between France, Spain, England, and Argentina? Separate question, who do you like in the two semifinal games?

For reference, Kalshi shows France 59%/Spain 41% and England 54%/Argentina 46%. I'm surprised to see England a favorite over Argentina.

RE: Happy World Cup - PVTree - 07-14-2026

From what I have seen, I think France is the best team and will win the WC.

In today's semi, my prediction is that France will score on the first half of a back and forth game. Towards the end, Spain will push for the equalizer, but will be caught in a lethal counterattack, and France scores another Escar-goal to end up 2-0.

Tomorrow, I think England will let Argentina take control of the ball, dominate possession, and rely on quick counterattacks and mistakes.

Argentina usually has a way to win these tight battles. Despite their desire for revenge for the hand-of-god goal, the Spice Boys see the Maradonas tango their way to the final with a very late goal off of some type of low-probability-to-go-in shot when everybody thought the game was going to overtime.

On Sunday, I see France not surrendering field possession, advancing at will into Argentina's half, and winning in a dominant fashion by 2 scores.

All predictions are wrong or your money back.

Spain has completely frustrated France’s attack. (Of course Egypt looked really good against Argentina for the first 75 min).

Assuming this 2-0 lead holds for Spain, I'm shocked.
I also would have picked France to win it all.
Guess that's why they play the game (excuse me, match) and guess that's why it's good I've demurred on opening a Kalshi account.

RE: Happy World Cup - PVTree - 07-14-2026

At least I got the score right. My spidey-senses must have short-circuited and got the opposite winning team. 8^)

RE: Happy World Cup - Nan3cy - 07-14-2026

I only saw the second half, but it just never looked as if the French team had the mojo today. By the second half hydration break, I think I would have been shocked if France scored.

RE: Happy World Cup - BostonCard - 07-14-2026

The Spanish defense has only given up a single goal all tournament.  If my math is right opponents only have 2.13 expected goals in the tournament, so it’s not a lucky fluke. I too expected France to prevail, but I’m not shocked.

PS, I expect them to beat the Argentina/England winner, but as I said, all predictions are wrong or your money back.

RE: Happy World Cup - PalmTree - 07-14-2026

Well - this ESP-FR final score takes a bit of the edge off the disappontment of last Monday's 1-0 loss to Espanha for those of us here on the Iberian left coast - kinda, sorta.  This is not to discount the need for a bit of a rebuild for the Seleção das Quinas, but hey......

RE: Happy World Cup - cardcrimson - 07-14-2026

Happy Bastille Day!

at least the French have something to celebrate. . . .
