Yep.  Jenkins is definitely a Bochy-kinda guy and he does a nice job of supporting his position.

I used to correspond regularly with him. Had lunch with him once at the Village Pub. (Jenkins I mean). Interesting background. Jim Murray was his neighbor. He hung out there a fair amount.  Not a bad mentor….

His father was a musical arranger - worked with, among others, Sinatra.

I’ve always thought Jenkins is a terrific columnist. Particularly relating to baseball. Just has a great feel for the game.

My fave in the Chron. Close seconds: Ostler for laughs, Shea for sobriety.

Mixed on Ostler.  He too often gets political (gratuitously) for my tastes. It’s a sports page.  But he can be very very good.  Agree Shea is solid. I also like Ann Killion.  And I thought Susan Slusser did a nice job as Giants beat writer.  Chron has always had good sports page.  The rest of the paper, not so much.

I sparred with Ostler over Kaepernick a couple of times but we could agree to disagree. Admire Killion and Slusser. As for the rest of the paper, with Willie Brown and CW Nevius gone, if it creeps any further Left it'll be in Havana. Or maybe Caracas.

As a long-suffering Padres fan, I will continue to be long-suffering.  Oh well, Phil’s were a better team this series.

I’m a big Bob Melvin fan but I do not understand why he did not go to Josh Hader with Harper up.

I think the Pads were spent after the emotional series v. LA.  Kinda like last year when the Dodgers were spent after the September divisional race followed by the 5 game set v. SF.

Having said that, I agree, the Phillies are a worthy champion.

RE: 2022 Giants thread - BostonCard - 10-23-2022

It’s not all bad, though.  Yankees were swept.

Judge stunk in the playoffs. Mister September. They need to look elsewhere next year and dump the guy.

This thread, from a Yankee fan, sounds vaguely familiar.

Apparently the Yankees *double checks notes* aren’t spending enough?!?

RE: 2022 Giants thread - Phogge - 10-24-2022

Funny, I have always thought that Robby Thompson would have made a great manager. But he never wanted it. I think he was just probably a nice guy who didn’t need it.

So the Phils hire another Rob Thompson and he creates a miracle. I guess Joe Girardi had no clue.

BTW, I’m a uniform guy. Copped my away uni from State. Have Oakland Oaks, Hollywood Stars, Portland Beavers and others. Love the Phils uni. For you trivia guys what is the difference between the hat that Ashburn and Roberts wore and today’s regular (not the throwback blue) caps?

The Yankees are worth 6 Billion.  2 Billion more than the next  team (Dodgers). We’re I a Yankees fan, I’d be arguing that they should be spending way more than any other team.

RE: 2022 Giants thread - OutsiderFan - 10-24-2022

The Yankees' trade deadline moves didn't really help them at all. Montas was bad. Trivino was meh. And though Bader was their best offensive performer in the post-season, they still didn't even make it to the WS. They should have traded for Rodon.

Losing three of their top relief Pitchers and DJ LeMahieu doomed them. Another thing that happened was that they traded offense for better defense from '21 to '22, but had the most errors of all the playoff teams. I don't know what happened, but after the AS break they were just not as good as before, and then the defense letting them down in playoffs was a surprise.

Judge reminds me of Barry Bonds in the playoffs. He's so much of the offense that if you really focus on him, you basically dare the rest of the team to beat you. Then again, Gerrit Cole has not delivered for what they paid him. Still, the Yankees didn't lose because they didn't pay enough. They lost because the team wasn't healthy, had a small margin for error, and a team with a $60M lower payroll was better.

As an aside, nice to see one of the highest paid guys - Bryce Harper - perform in the playoffs. But I don't think the Phils have enough to slay the Astros.
