RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Mick - 09-24-2022

Here are the NFL Hall of Fame coaches, listed alphabetically by last name.  Put them in order of playoff winning percentage (I did not include four coaches who largely coached prior to the AAFC merger, including Steve Owen, George Halas, Curly Lambeau, Ray Flaherty). Current coaches (e.g. Bill Belichick) aren't on the list.

Beavs, Cougs, Dawgs, Ducks all in the AP top 25.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 09-24-2022

Mick, Robinson is in the International Roller Derby Hall of Fame.

Now Mick, name the two top jammers, the pivot skater and the two blockers for the 1960 champion Bay Area Bombers. Men's five. Which one worked for the Oakland Raiders for years after retiring?

Correct!

We all know who has hit the most HRs while striking out 200 or more batters. Who are the two tired for 2nd?

Not trivia but since SF old timers hang out here, some very sad news:
Double Play bar severely damaged by fire

Sad sad day for old Seals fans. Phogge had us all for a lunch at the Double Play before the back room was removed. I went back with another friend 6-7 years ago. A great place with all the photos etc

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 09-25-2022

The back room was a 360 mural of the Stadium. Tables were set up on the infield. Hamm's Brewery, the light towers the CF scoreboard with the two stars where Neil Sheridan and Joe Brovia hit the only (at that time) two homers over the board. There were many gloves, bats, pictures on the walls including a shot of the Phogge in Gator uni.

Talk about a torching among some of us old-timers.

When was the last time Cal, Stanford, USC and UCLA were all in the AP Top 25?  I don't know the answer, just curious.

Don Coryell. Wrong. Coryell fell short. I’m pretty sure it’s not Tomsula…….

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 09-26-2022

Hey Mick... you SC grads would have loved going to a Roller Derby game circa 1960. Nobody checked for flasks. Is SC still a drinking school? Was back in the day late 40's, early 50's when my starting tackle cousin got kicked out for "inappropriate behavior." Continued into the 90's with my niece at her sorority. LSD was the choice of some of my teammates at State but Greenies were plentiful in our field house. The Jesuits at SI smoked liked chimneys and preferred cheap wine and Irish.

Bobmers 1959/60... Charlie O'Connell (the King of RD) at Pivot. Georgie Run Run Jones and Ralph Valladeros at Jammer with Hal Janowitz and others at Blocker. Run Run was an equipment guy with the Raiders for decades.

What was the nickname of the 49ers first placekicker?

Bobbbbbb knows but won't tell.

“The Toe”.

Weren’t a lot of kickers nicknamed “The Toe” back in the day?

Also, no history of Roller Derby is complete without a mention of John “Porky” Parker, the scourge of the Brooklyn Red Devils…..

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 09-26-2022

Joe Vetrano.

What longtime North Bay HS and JC baseball coach and winner of a National HS COY award was once a DE for the 49ers?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 09-26-2022

Lou "the Toe" Gorza

So this one get lost:

We all know who has hit the most HRs while striking out 200 or more batters. Who are the two tied for 2nd?

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - Phogge - 09-26-2022

Bobbbb, I think Lou The Toe Gorza played for the Cabo San Luis Sailfish. Lou Groza was a Brown.

Wes Farrell and Don Newcombe.

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 09-26-2022

No on Newcombe and Farrell

RE: Sports trivia thread 2022 - BobK - 09-26-2022

Most HRs with 200 or more strikeouts as a pitcher in a second season.
