Our last TD was earned through run plays. Why did we go away from that? Do we avoid playing to our strengths?

Gulbranson-awful, not a power five QB by any stretch. 5-6 throws that were Jack West/Josh Nunes territory.
Washington(corner transfer), not a power five boundary player. Burnt by Jackson Harris on 4+ occasions.
Refs-attrocious as always
Reich-meh, play calling had some nice wrinkles but not sure the end sequencing with timeouts made any sense…
This team isn’t winning more than 2 games, and there is little to zero light at the end of the tunnel quite frankly.
You could see the difference in Williams and High vs Ayomanor and Mosley to be obvious… the former being players that should be 4-5 on your depth chart in the ACC.
Roush, NFL player? Lots of physical guys that can block out there…four years in and still zero hands.
#91, soft ass penalty but wtf are you doing anyways….
Hard to stay invested in this program for much longer….

Hmm, how do you feel about 91? Your series of posts about him didn't make it clear. :-)
Not defending it, it sucked. Think ref overreacted too, but it's NCAA so 91 was dumb there. But it would have still been 2nd down without the penalty. We have no idea what would have happened after that.
So let's not lose focus on blaming our absolutely terrible QB play, Reich sticking with him, and the horrible play-calling on our last possession!
I agree with Farm Team. 91 made a dumb play, even for a Yale grad. But this game, like so many last year was lost by bad QB play and play calling that failed to recognize just how limited our QB is . Many good things ..Micah Ford is a warrior, but this is a classic tough loss.

About what I thought. The worst P4 team. They probably run into a win or (the dreaded) three some way some how. Winless is definitely on the table though.
Not impressed by anything Stanford did other than a couple of backs can run. They should portal out to a decent team soon enough. Roush is not good. Gulbranson is sub-awful. So I guess he's beaten Stanford twice so far in his career. Unless Brown is utter crap, Reich will lose the team if he keeps him on the field. Remember Reich is a sub-.500 coach. Very unimpressed with whatever that was from the booth and sideline.
Lex is mad at the Yalie and that was idiotic, but Stanford lost because they just aren't good, then choked, then folded. Slow, small, and stupid is no way to go through a season.
Wow, has Stanford hit rock bottom. A one-legged QB ran circles around them when it counted. I can see four-figure attendance at home games, and while I'll watch them in Charlottesville from the Hoo student section, I kind of wish that wedding broke so that we were at the FSU game instead.
Stanford football's future comes down to whether Luck has it and is embarrassed into fixing it, or embarrassed into quitting. Given that he came to Stanford off of 1-10 I'll bet on the former. Nothing changes until Stanford gets some talent and that will take overpaying.
Hard team to watch.
Son's text said it all. "How bad must Brown be?"

Ripped the words out of my mouth. Uninspired, slow football all the way around except for a few nice flashes from the RB’s. Hard to get excited when you know your head coach has no investment past this season.
I can’t think of more than 2-3 players on this squad that a serious power five team would want.

Man -- that's gonna sting all season. They executed in the last 5 minutes down the stretch; and we didn't.
Heroic action by the young QB Alejado, who was playing limp and spotted us a TD with an opening fumble in the end zone !!
Micah Ford did go over 100 yards but Gulbranson could only deliver 15 of 30 for just 109 yards
-- and a BIG INT to kill our drive in the fourth quarter.
We hurt ourselves too many ways; and they wanted it more.

Sorry if this was posted, but we have Frank Reich and Andrew Luck and Gulbranson was their pick? We’re in a bad situation. My guess is that we have a new QB

Is this a new all time low for our program?
Just a killer. We lost to a team that had a one legged quarterback for virtually the whole second half and it didn’t even matter. I really don’t think Ben can be the QB. How much worse was Brown in camp cause the intel report was the QB1 race wasn’t even close. A winless season is very much possible and then an exodus of players from the program again. Not sure how this cycle ends other than putting a ton of money into buying talent and no one important at Stanford seems interested in doing that.
RE: FB -- Hawaii Game Thread -
jacket3ree - 08-23-2025
Hate to say it, but this probably won't sting at all. If the season was going somewhere and an extra win would matter, then maybe.
Unfortunately this is not a P4 roster or anywhere close. And other than two super cool comebacks back in the day, Frank Reich is not some sort of magician.
Winless to the playoff in three years would be a cool story for the next guy, though. That speculation may be all we get this fall. BYU should roll this team in Provo.

This football program goes against everything Stanford is supposed to be, no big splashes, little monetary commitment, another lame duck head coach, a qb that while respectfully wants to be a doctor , has zero aspirations beyond this season.
Why would anyone want to come play for this pathetic excuse of an football program?

We didn't look great and I'm upset we didn't pull it out, but this is pretty close to what I expected. Gulbranson was not good but not as horrible as some are saying, in my opinion. Way better than Brown looked in limited time last year (low bar unfortunately).
Hawaii may just have an awful D-line, but pass and run protection looked improved, which would be brobdingnagian. We'll find out in 2 weeks if we are actually OK on the line.
I thought offensive play calling was pretty good and seemed to match our capabilities. The pass over the middle to Holt on 3rd down when the defense was selling out against the run was great.
I am neither discouraged nor encouraged relative to expectations before the game. But man, it would have been nice to have a win under our belts to build some momentum (even if undeserved). Brutal.
RE: FB -- Hawaii Game Thread -
JeebsOak - 08-23-2025
I don’t think Gulbranson completed a pass more than 15 yards downfield and the one he did, should ah e been called back but the play stood.
Also, wasn’t he under 51 yards at the half? I mean by all accounts he was horrible today… and it wasn’t like Hawaiis defensive line is Georgia…

I feel like this thread is overly pessimistic.
Sure the QB play today was bad. Either it was nerves and Gulbranson will bounce back or someone else will step up. Brown, Jackson or Rizk. There is no way the QB battle that not one of those three can't step in to play.
Better QB play and we win. Emmett Kennedy FG doesn't get blocked and we likely win.
The O-Line and RB play was great today. The roadmap to winning is clear and we're going to see a return to Stanford style football this year.
My biggest concern was the defense. Lots of big plays given up to a one legged QB. The competition likely only get stiffer there.
BC, UVA, SJSU, Pitt, CAL and UNC are all winable games imo.
Sure it'll be nice when the talent level improves but you can see the roadmap and trajectory of where this program is going. Let's just enjoy the moment and these kids who have decided to stick around at Stanford after all the turmoil the last 4 years.

What's the story with Elijah Brown? 4 star guy out of Mater Dei, he can't seem to beat out Ashton Daniels or Ben Gulbranson for the starting job. Last year he was a true freshman and had some injury time, maybe you can give him the benefit of the doubt. This year he's not on the field (one game so far). Does he not show up well in practice, is the staff underestimating him, is there something else going on?

Wow, yes we lost but I'm really surprised how negative everyone is.
We weren't expected to win this game. The Vegas line was Stanford +2.5. Right on the nose.
Yes we had a chance to win. I don't blame 91. There were any number of plays that might have changed the outcome...the blocked field goal, the interception, the D stopping either of Hawaii's two long drives at the end, the D not giving up 45 yards in penalties that last drive, Reich calling running plays instead throwing on Stanford's last possession at least until there was no more than 30 seconds left on the clock, etc.
Some positives:
- first rushing touchdown in nearly two years
- first RB with a 100-yard rushing game since Micah Ford against Clemson last year
- only one delay of game penalty, which I think was intentional
- only one offensive holding penalty, which was declined and didn't change the outcome (I’m sure I’m not the only one who thought “offensive holding” every time the whistle blew.)
- a 9-minute run-first TD drive like we haven’t seen for almost a decade
I’m no Borg. I probably would have dropped my season tickets this year if Taylor were still the coach. Yet I had fun watching a game for the first time in a few years.
Ultimately we don't have the horses but at least the kids put up a fight.

Agree with cctop. I remember Gulbranson had looked decent for Oregon St. at least a few times the past couple years. He was way off today, maybe it was the subtropical conditions in Honolulu.
Welcome to Poly81, one of the legends of the Bootleg from the 1990s! With even moderately better QB play, as Lars would have said, We would've smoked these guys.
And what did Harbaugh like to say - the biggest improvement, is from the first game to the second game. Unfortunately LSJU goes from the heat and humidity of Honolulu, to the altitude of Provo.

Instead of running out the clock or gaining a first down, we gifted Hawai'i 1:45 and the ability to walk-off the game on a FG. We didn't really continue hammering that gassed Hawai'i run defense. Woody Hayes had something to say about what happens when you pass the ball, and for certain QBs, it really does hold true. Hawai'i gifted us three incomplete turnovers but decided to cash in on one. The coaches should have known to stop playing with fire, imo. Enough of them were here last season to remember, and BG's floor does seem very AD-like, though without the rushing upside.
I don't think we have a special teams coach listed. We have a senior special teams quality control analyst, but that's it for special teams, it seems. And Emmet Kenney had a 34-yd FG attempt blocked. Thirty-four yards. Special teams seems like a really important phase of the game, but what do I know. I'm sure the coaches have it handled.
