*raises hand* I know, I know
Haley was at the 1 even though it has been proven even 4 games in that this doesn’t work. The coaches are being let off the hook on social media. There is enough fault to go around and they deserve a lion’s share of it.

I have faith that as she heals and the lineup gels we’ll start to see her have a larger and more effective role.
Other than the block for a dunk vs Montana State and a similar block vs Maryland, Fran is not a defensive stopper on defense. She is generally a mark when she comes in because she can’t guard the perimeter players closely or bang down below. Listen closely to Vic’s postgame comments after Texas game. Teams go right at her when she comes into the game. If Evina (UConn) doesn’t hit those wide open 3s in the first half in near succession, Stanford could have possibly been up at halftime by 8? vs down by 1. Guess who was guarding Evina? If you say it was the scout, then we can blame the coaches too because after the second one, someone should have adjusted. Same with Beal and Hall yesterday. Beal going into that game was a 40% 3-pt shooter, higher than everyone on our team except Hannah and Tara kept the same scout on her and Hall, who even though she was sub 30% the previous year, she was actually a shooter in high school and that low % was more a result of lack playing time/reps vs reality. Trading 2s (doubling Boston) for 3s (Beal, Hall) was not smart

Just look at the stats; Haley was 1/13 on field goals in the 2nd half, had a critical missed free throw late, and a critical turnover inbounding the ball late. Let's call a spade a spade; her 2nd half performance was really really bad. I still think she's a tremendous player and talent but this was one of the worst halves of basketball I've seen from her ever. So, i don't know why everyone wants to sugarcoat that and lessen the blame on her shoulders but her 2nd half stats are very telling themselves. When there are 16 seconds in the game, and you're 4 points up, the last thing you want to do is to give up a 3. That gives the other team a good chance to beat you with any 2 or even tie with a single FT (technical foul?). Give up a 2 if you must (no fouling). Strategically, in that game situation, trying to avoid a theoretical 2pt shot by giving up an open 3pt shot is unwise.
Given the positions on the court, Jones had no way of getting to Boston if Boston dove toward the basket. To double Boston would require Brink to leave her player and Jones to rotate in.
The dribbler is on her half of the court. Jones failed to contest her player from getting the ball. The ball handler always had an easy pass to the shooter whenever she wanted. Tick-tock, time is running out - why give them open passes whenever they want?
(The moment the pass is initiated, Jones is about 12' away from her player.)
An uncontested shot (ok, mostly uncontested: Jones was 6' away when the ball went up.).
Considering the theory that Jones should lay off the shooter: Coming into the game, she was 5 of 11 (45%) for the year.
As for the missed FT, to me that's not an issue. Even the best FT shooters miss some. Thinking that players should *really* make their FT late in the game seems like thinking they should not be as good in FT throughout the game.
(Btw, I noticed Jones blocking out on a rebound in the 3rd quarter.)
By the way, Jump played the same number of minutes as Jones. Lepolo also played more than 40 minutes.

Great analysis, MT, of the sort you are famous for! Appreciate the stills lifted from the video too.
So what is your theory for
why Jones sagged so far off of her mark? Clearly it was a bad outcome. I am trying to figure out if this was on Jones or on the coaches for instructing her to defend in a particular way. Is there any chance this was a zone? At the very least it seems a lot like a sagging man defense, which is one of our more common defenses. I feel that if Jones had been instructed to closely defend her player that shot would not have happened, but that she was probably doing her assignment in a sagging man. If so, she sagged about 6' too far.

Are you implying Hannah and Lepolo were effective in the 2nd half on little rest? I sure saw something very different. Lepolo was taken out in the 2nd quarter because she started turning over the ball due to fatigue, and ineffective in the 4th once S. Carolina loosened their defense on her and kept her in front of them (according to Dawn). Hannah couldn’t get separation to shoot, had 0 ballhandling duties and had the easiest defensive assignment. Neither Lepolo nor Hannah were capable of, nor expected, to go 1 on 1 and get their own shot the way Haley had to, while playing those minutes.

Haley has come through more often than she has not. They don’t call her “Tournament Haley” because she lays a lot of eggs in crucial games. She has been Stanford’s most consequential player in the last decade and deserves some grace given she changed positions this year.

Just stop already. Start your own Haley Jones fan club thread if you must. We're not talking about who's the most consequential player the last decade for Stanford WBB. This is the SC game thread and Haley didn't have a good second half and it was quite obvious to any non-bias observer. I'm not putting the loss solely on her. Maybe she was fatigued but she didn't play well in the big moments of this big game. End of story. She's a tremendous player and I love watching her play. Yesterday wasn't her day. Move on already.

I have no idea if the coaches told them to tighten up their defenses, to deny passes, or what in the timeout before that possession. Whatever they said, Jones is an experienced player and, IMO, should have known to defend enough to discourage the pass. She didn't and IMO it hurt. Obviously she's got a lot of talent. Whether under the coaches' orders or through her own tendency, she plays a roving style of defense, thus often leaving 4 to guard 5. (In OT, Jump is left to guard 2 players on the 3pt line, and she can't get to the one that the pass comes out to.) I do agree that the coaches are aware of this and at the least permit it to continue. And I certainly agree they know better than me. Maybe I'm just a disappointed fan, but I see the points that she doesn't stop. (This particular shot was the most damaging. There were other plays that I feel she should have done better.)
At the previous game, I said "I bet that Jones doesn't block out on a rebound even once in the South Carolina game". I'm glad to have been proven wrong.

That's the number of minutes that Jones played in each of our five games; one game is not like the others. Is it any wonder she had nothing left in the tank at the end?
It was tough to watch her struggle towards the end, but that happens, especially against a top flight team like South Carolina. The Gamecocks had a say too. I think our visiting South Carolina fan is right; we shortened our bench, which may have been how we managed to build the lead through the first three quarters, but we tired out at the end, especially given that we went from four laughers where nobody averaged more than 20 minutes to a really tough, physical game.
Lepolo played 41 minutes, so for the vast majority of the game, ball handling responsibilities did not fall solely on Jones. Jones brought it up some, but for the most part, she had support when she needed it, and doing so was not the reason for her ineffectiveness. Jones had six assists and 4 turnovers; Lepolo had 6 assists and 3 turnovers.
If you look at the still frames, it looks like every defender is sagging off their shooter. Jump is in the exact same relative position to her shooter as Jones, but on the other side; Prechtel is on the elbow. The shooter was also a foot behind the three point line, which made the shot harder, but also harder for Jones to get out to. For the game, South Carolina shot 5/17, so it is really hard to fault our three point defense, as a whole. That being said, situationally, it probably called for defending the three point shot a bit better.
Losses are always tough, and a loss where your team was leading by 10 points going into the fourth quarter is especially tough. But South Carolina is an elite team, perhaps the best we will face this year, and we were 3 seconds from beating them (but that's why it's a 40 minute game, not a 39:57 game). Non-Stanford fans who vote in the AP poll still think we are the second best team in the country, despite the loss. I doubt this will be our last loss of the year (remember in our national title year, we lost back to back games against UCLA and Colorado (and then got taken to overtime again by Colorado). But we are a damned good team; on Sunday, South Carolina was just a little bit better. The important thing will be to learn our lessons from this game, and improve.

9 times out of 10, South Carolina would miss that 3 or Haley would hit both FT's and we win. Oh well. Hopefully this keeps us hungry and motivated to get them back when it counts most.

Boston may be the best player in college basketball, but South Carolina still had Final Four level talent on the floor in that 2nd quarter. The ESPNW recruiting rankings of the 5 SC players who played the most minutes in the 2nd quarter were 2, 4, 10, 14 and 47. The 5 Stanford players with the most minutes in the 2nd quarter were ranked 1, 15, 19, 50 and 71. So I'm not sure I agree we "should" have increased our lead in that 2nd quarter. Perhaps if Brink hadn't picked up her 2nd foul 45 seconds after being subbed in. Or maybe if Tara had trusted Betts to play more minutes.

My report on the game is under Richter Reports on the Fast Break Club site,

As of this writing, the teaser still shows the previous games, but if you click on Richter Reports, the latest story appears.
As an aside, the game didn't change AP rankings. We're still No. 2, SC No. 1.

What I saw:
South Carolina brings a wave of players who are quick to the ball on defense and rebounding, and who can create on their own off the dribble. In the final ten seconds of a shot clock, they have more players who can produce a score.
Should we meet again, a key might be Iriafen's growth. She missed three shots that, after all full season. she easily might make. And we probably need one more player--Navar may be the only candidate, unless it's Bosgana--who can create something late in a shot clock against a very athletic defense.
This is a terrific Stanford team. To beat South Carolina, we need some players to emerge.

Other posters have pointed out that Iriafen has a nice short range jumper that she really hasn’t used so far. She’s very athletic but I think she’s a tad undersized at the low post. I think gradually we will see Betts get more minutes at Kiki’s expense. I would add Betts to Hulk’s list of players who have to emerge.
Prechtel should get more credit for playing a solid game. I think we will need to see more of her and I think we’ll need her to spell Brink. As wonderful a player as she is, Cam’s propensity for early fouls is not going to magically disappear.
We see the Prechtel/Belibi post combo out there a lot but I would love to see more Brink/Betts and Prechtel/Betts.

Tara playing Haley very heavy minutes -- 44 minutes -- may have cost the game. Betts only 4 minutes?!
Re Haley's missed late FT, it is woefully short, barely hit the front iron, bounced back toward her. Tired?
I don't get why Tara invited 5-for-19 Haley to the post-game presser with Brink.
