But seriously, as R2D2/C3PO said in Star Wars back in the day, "I don't have a good feeling about this . . ." Was it Texas Tech or TCU that ran out of players a few years ago and had to get people from intramural teams onto the roster so they could field a team for games?

I guess what I find most frustrating about this is the absence of any specifics in terms of what or who the players supposedly have problems with. And I'm not even sure it's the same issues as when we had the rash of transfers with Betts et al leaving. For example, when Lauren Betts transferred out, we had a different assistant coach (Britney Anderson) who I believe was the one who made some negative comments about Betts' size, etc. But she's not around anymore. And we didn't have Tempie, Heather, or Bird (Erica McCall). Are ALL of them problematic? Is the notion the environment is toxic? And if so, it's kind of surprising to me because I felt like Paye was so complimentary of the players in every press conference and interview. That doesn't mean she can't be different behind the scenes, but it is surprising to me because she seems very supportive and affirming.

From the outside, we could all see that we were not a well coached offense, but that seems like a very different basis for a player revolt than what is supposedly being claimed by that one twitter account. And it's not even clear to me what the plan is: sack Paye, the entire assistant coaching staff, and conduct an open search? Is that going to keep our players from transferring? Doesn't seem overly likely to me.

Maybe Tara could just come out of retirement for a season? Is that in the option set? ;)

unless something pops up as it did with Troy Taylor I doubt Paye gets fired, if they were going to fire her why waste the last week when you could have started looking for her replacement

After that season, Tara at least had the humility to get outside help to repair the culture of the team. And it started with the coaches taking responsibility for how they failed the players. Open, honest, and agreeing to hold each other accountable.

indeed, we have had troubles for several years, starting after the championship year, when tara was still coaching: betts transferring, iriafen transferring, kiki rice declining our offer, haley jones not attending the banquet. 

one factor in common might be poor handling of nil. there was that sf chronicle article about kate's emphasis on "players come to stanford for the academics." the article quoted several players saying no $ had been distributed, promised, or even discussed this year. bob posted that money had indeed been raised from major donors; but then, if i understand correctly, posted more recently that some of the money raised had not been paid out. to my view haley was demonized for spending time on outside financial pursuits, when stanford should have been celebrating her pioneering example rather than complaining about her.

to my eye, kate seems supportive on the sidelines and in the posted videos (though those are curated), but she certainly mishandled playing time for subs. she has to be smart to have 2 advanced degrees from stanford, but i wonder if a j.d. helps a coach. law school is rather hierarchical and doesn't emphasize innovation and flexibility. attorneys might make better directors and general managers.

to my eye, kate emphasized a structured offense as tara had before her. it was disheartening to see that kate had no answer for a zone defense. and it was interesting to see how well MAS did in the last game when kate gave her the green light - an entirely different player.

interesting idea to have tara come back for a year. i don't think tara has much interest or expertise in working with nil and the portal.

I have learned we do have money. Some players were paid what 2 years ago would be substantial
However it’s a continuation process We can’t stop. If we want a top recruiting class we need the bucks.
Of course the transfers out seem more to be about Kate not money
The future is all about money

According to her Instagram account, Lara is in the portal now.  Mentioned several of her friends leaving the program.  Damn.  Something needs to change but, long term, I don’t think any coach is going to be enough to put us back among the elite.

BobK, I agree that $$$$$ plays a brobdingnagian role in college sports now. That's a reality.

That said, from what I have heard, securing SWBB's future is about hiring a head coach that the players can trust, respect and inn't toxic when cameras aren't around. 

I don't think the exodus is about money.

BobK, who would you recommend reaching out to as a fan/alumni/donor to indicate our displeasure? The AD himself? I've gotten to know Tara fairly well and trade emails but I suspect she's not the right ear for a fan revolt?

The formula for succeeding in big-time college sports is not rocket science; it's just different from the old system.  It's still about getting the best players, but that now requires paying at or above the NIL market price, and we must remove the arrogant barriers our Stanford administration has been allowed to impose on transfers and incoming freshmen. We must be able to reload on a dime with a boatload of cash whenever the NCAA rules allow it, without Stanford-specific roadblocks from thoughtless administrators who don't care about sports. Then it's about winning because if your good players can't trust that you will be perennially in the NCAA tournament, then they'll transfer to a team that can. Having great coaching is terrific, but even Tara couldn't do this without great players.  I blame our current predicament on the inflexible administration, and I'm concerned Stanford won't be great again until we eliminate unnecessary administrative hurdles for incoming freshmen and transfers. We can still require that our players must be smart and attend class, but otherwise we should be able to get them into school under the same timeframes and minimal administrative burden as the teams we want to compete against. Otherwise, we can't be competitive.  Until I see Stanford bringing in the high-impact transfers we need, I'll know that we're still unwilling and unable to compete in this era.  At least we have great libraries.
