Stanford up 2-0.

What a great strike.

UW really misses their Center D, Udovich, who went down with a third ACL tear earlier in the season.

RE: WSoc: Catarina Macario is good - Viking_Guy - 10-26-2018

Watched the game last night.  UW offered a glimpse of how to counteract most of what Stanford does.

They played with three high players pressuring the Stanford backline, but left space between those and the back seven, allowing Hiatt to gather the ball, turn and move forward, but denying her any targets for a quick ball forward.  A compromise that led to denying the Cardinal easy movement of the ball around the back and not exposing your backline by bringing forward more pressure.  Yes, Sam Hiatt, Boissiere and DiBiasi had acres of room when they gathered the ball, but Stanford couldn't hold the ball forever.

It also resulted in a more closely fought game than many in the Pac-12 season; the unfortunate bounce for the Huskies that led to the PK (though the ball was on its way through to Macario when it hit the UW defender's hand) and Catarina's wonder strike above obscure the fact that shots and shots on goal were relatively even.  The Huskies didn't have many truly amazing chances, but Jahansouz did have a lot more (and a lot more dicey) work than normal.

Good news was good minutes from Macario and Haley, as well as Xiao, who will all definitely be needed on Sunday.  Because absent them, our attack is, while skilled, neither quick nor fast.  Civana Kuhlman and Abby Greubel are both very good players, but they don't appear to be attackers who DEMAND the opponent's attention and draw multiple defenders.

Very pretty goal.  (Of course, I had to reopen the Cardboard in another web browser to see it!)  They don't get much more perfect than that.

RE: WSoc: Catarina Macario is good - muiron - 10-26-2018

I didn't see the game, live or on replay (in midair for the actual match), but I'd note that, in addition to missing stars Tierna Davidson (broken ankle) and Sophia Smith (broken fibula), stars Catarina Macario, Madison Haley, Jay Boissiere, and Michelle Xiao didn't start.  But happily they all subbed in at one point or another.

Each team had only 8 shots - very very rare for Stanford to be held to single digits or not to outshoot the opposition. There was rain but I'm also told that UW has a great CB who kept us from getting shots off. Anyway, it's a W on the road. The unbeaten streak goes to 38, the Pac 12 winning streak to 26, and its record this year to 15-0-1. Next up - at Wazzu on Sunday, then at Cal on next Friday, Nov 2 and a make-up (for a rained out match!) at ASU on Sunday, Nov. 4.

Haley had to remove herself late in the match.   She limped off to the sideline and needed attention.  Her ankle was heavily iced, hopefully, nothing too serious.  In regards to Greubel, she had a couple of moments where she could have taken a shot but she decided to pass the ball instead.   I hope Ceci Gee is given more chances.  I really like her game.

The match against WSU will be a tough one. Hopefully, Haley will be available.

RE: WSoc: Catarina Macario is good - oldalum - 10-27-2018

Our back line is our strongest line, and I was concerned that both Girma and McGrady were not on the field toward the end of the game. For Girma it may have been the result of the collision with Jahansouz in the first half; I have no idea what happened to McGrady. Hope they recover quickly!

I was pleased that the rain and wet field did not seem to affect us much: a few more errant passes and first touches, but we actually seemed to slip and fall down less than UW players did. WSU will be another wet field with rain in the morning--maybe that's why they moved the game to 2 pm (from 1). A dangerous game for us.

That shot was just a thing of beauty. Wow! Around the defender so it blocked the view of the goalie and just off the right post.

I haven’t read any mention of Sophia Smith’s broken fibula except here. What a big loss. With Davidson, two National Team caliber players lost for the year to rough play.

OK - I take it back. If you havent seen her score today against WSU it is a must see and still i cant believe it goal. Amazing!

Go to 35 seconds in the video BostonCard posted below to see Macario’s goal.

The goal was amazing, and looking at the shots, it looks like we dominated much of the game.  We tied, though, on a sloppy clear, which feels almost like a loss.

It seems in soccer, a lot of shots are relatively weak & easy saves.   Today, Stanford had a lot of very legitimate shots.  (For instance see the shot about 10 seconds before Stanford's goal.)  Late in the game, I remember the announcer saying there were 12 saves for WSU total, with 3 by non-goalies (at least two of which were at a net when  the goalie was not able to defend).  IIRC, there were two shots that bounced off the goal as well.  Stanford played well enough to get many great chances to score, but the WSU goalie played very well, plus the other players who blocked shots.   I'm sure the WSU goalie deserves the defensive player of the week.

On the other hand, Stanford's goalie made one costly mistake.  She had come off the line (I think out of the box) to get the ball and then passed too lazily.  A WSU player intercepted the pass, and, in a couple of steps had a shot at the empty goal.   I suspect she'll never make that mistake again, but the damage is done.  (Btw, Stanford's goal came on a failed clear, but the box was crowded, not empty.)

As the announcers noted, the tying goal seemed to give WSU energy and the rest of the game was played fairly evenly.  Did Stanford get exhausted, or was there a mental letdown, I don't know.

She could be the best women's soccer player we've ever had, and that says something.

How in the actual $#@* is Catarina Macario not the offensive player of the week.

For shame.

Don't blame me....I voted for Catarina!

That said, for me, it was a real toss-up between her and Weaver, who was also outstanding last week. I actually had to take a few minutes to think about it. Do Weaver's fantastic games against Cal & Stanford carry more weight than Macario's two transcendent goals? Depends on who you are, I guess.

If I had viewed it as a tie, I would have broken it by saying Weaver had won offensive player of the week once before, Macario zero times. Or looked at another way, of the 5 Pac-12 players who've scored the most goals in conference play, Macario (tied for first in goals) is the only one who hasn't been named offensive player of the week.
