Punting from Opponent 34 - OutsiderFan - 11-27-2020

Yes, you put the other team inside the 10.  But they have the ball with an opportunity to tie or win the game if you do.  If you kick the FG, you go ahead by 10 points, and make them score twice to beat you.  If you miss the FG, you give up 30 yards that you can give up in a play or two, as they did.

Just incredibly dumb, and college football fans across the country know it.

We also punted on 4th and 6 from the Cal 39, so two punts from inside the opponent's 40.

I didn't like the Punt from 39, but could justify it since it was 4th and 6. I would have gone for it because that's what winners do.

My bigger gripe was our lapses (holding penalty and a sack) that took us out of field goal range and led to the punts. A single field goal would have spared us from the drama.

Edit: From the 34 yard line, I would have tried the field goal and give Toner the chance to be the hero.

I'd be more comfortable with it if the TreeFense weren't such a sieve. They played well today overall but can't be trusted unlike teams of the past. Shaw is playing with the army he wants not the one he has.

I'm guessing you're putting a heavy emphasis on the word "outsider" in your screen name today because Bay Area fans know this is what matters. [Image: 32808_full.jpg]

PS: David Shaw special 9-1 in Big Games

RE: Punting from Opponent 34 - Langdude - 11-27-2020

Didn't we also punt from their 40, on our last full series?

This year, better to be lucky than good.

Without the special teams play (and the holding call), we would have been toast. Great that we won, but not a coaching clinic by any stretch.

We will get killed by OSU this year. . . .

And FWIW, college football fans across the country weren't paying attention to the game, anyway.

Yes, but that one at least made some sense, unless you think Toner can reliably hit a 57 yard field goal.  It was fourth and 11, so going for it didn’t make a ton of sense, and you would prefer to force the bears to go 90 yards to tie it than 60 yards (and more like 53 if we go for the FG and miss).

Winners win the game.   Shaw won the game.   Therefore he did what at least some winners might do because he was the winner.

The team doesn't get that 4th down and then the doom and gloom crowd would complain about the play calling.   Cal would be amped up, and the final 10 minutes takes a different vibe.

The winners win The AXE.  Shaw and crew have that thing, so that's all we need for today.

I would like to submit that we can resume the grumbling about what Shaw could do in game situations or with different staff tomorrow.

This is a bit like ESPN where seconds after a team wins a title, the crew jumps in and talks about odds for NEXT year often with the players on that team while they are still on the field or court.

Come on - Enjoy the day.

RE: Punting from Opponent 34 - OutsiderFan - 11-27-2020

The Axe means nothing to me. I want to see well-played, smart, entertaining football, like what I saw from Oregon State and Oregon tonight. Neither Stanford or Cal demonstrated anything of the sort today.

Just because you don't wear a mask it doesn't mean you absolutely will get Covid, but it's dumb not to wear one nonetheless.

RE: Punting from Opponent 34 - Phogge - 11-27-2020

Was it Harballs or Shaw who blew off the ESPN sideline lady post game? She was heard on mike to the effect that she was insulted. Loved it. After Trans World International Productions ESPN is the worst.

The bit about a mask (or lack thereof) seemed to be a non-sequitor.  Was this in reference to Big Game, the Oregon State/Oregon match, or something else?

Exactly. You are an outsider.

RE: Punting from Opponent 34 - pefloresjr - 11-27-2020

I didn't like the call to punt instead of attempt the field goal but many, many teams don't attempt field goals over 50 yards.  I think we have the kicker to justify the attempt but I also remember the impossible 0 for 4 night at Oregon.  I was MUCH more unhappy about the penalty and the team's poor performance in the red zone.  Given the defense's issues (although they were actually decent today) I was satisfied with Shaw's decision to make it tougher for Cal to make their final drive.  Cal was stopped many times by the Stanford defense in the game and had to really grind to make the final drive.  (And yes, the turnovers weren't dumb luck but mostly the result of good play by the Stanford D.) The fact that Cal made it to the end zone was not a forgone conclusion.  They scored 23 total points, they were not destroying us with their offense.  These were two teams that are not great but to describe Shaw's decision as terrible or as outside the normal range of good coaches is ridiculous.

Proper mood:  Stanford won.  We've got the Axe.

Cheers,
Pete F.

Yeah, that's a good summary. I think that the team executed very poorly at times, and there were some really questionable coaching decisions. But I also think there were some good plays, including on defense and by our running backs, and some good coaching adjustments, too. And WE FREAKING WON BIG GAME! That makes up for a lot of heartache over the last two seasons.

Good job and congrats to Coach Shaw and the team.

Yeah, when you are 0-6 in your last six games you just want to win one. You aren't (at least I'm not) real particular on how you get it done. Of course when the win is against Kal rather than Little Sisters of the Poor it makes it much more gratifying.

RE: Punting from Opponent 34 - vataha - 11-28-2020

In a season like this, the axe means EVERYTHING. In a series of streaks, getting the axe back after a one year layover in Berkeley makes 9 of 10 much better than 0-2. That’s a perspective I prefer.

This is what college football is all about.  Bragging rights over a symbolic item.

I thought it was a great, great Big Game. 24-23, down to the last few minutes says it all to me. Evenly matched teams and an entertaining game. Good decisions, flawed decisions, great plays, mis-plays. Lots of fun. Enjoyed every minute.

If I'm remembering the same thing you are, this was Shaw, and I *think* it was after the 2016 Rose Bowl. That wasn't a snub of ESPN, however, but more accurately a screwup *by* ESPN. Just as the reporter got to Shaw, he was pulled away to get up on stage for the trophy ceremony, which is no doubt dictated by the network. But I definitely remember the reporter's audible exasperation.
